Foodie Friday

Well, not that sort of foodie.
I'm thinking throw-together dinners that -- while not suitable for Sunday guests -- warm the spirit.

Unless you want to count (Tom's) two doctor's appointments in two days, this week's been pretty unremarkable.*  The Christmas decor's hidden away -- and a dishwasher chosen.  (Not my idea, but I'm done with 'someone's' strong suggestions.  I may or may not have remarked, "Just because it's there doesn't mean I'm going to use it.")

I guess you could say I've got the blues.  Not because our skies are gray and weepy.  No, I'm a little sad because the hint of snow never materialized.  Not even a respectable sleet.

Recently I asked, "What is it about cold weather that makes the thought of eating so attractive?"  And why do I think my middle name is Betty Crocker?

I'm sitting here, trying to ignore the urge to wander into the kitchen and open doors.  Idly waiting for a cue, "Eat me! Eat me!"

So, last week's French Onion meatloaf was less than stellar.  Despite following instructions to the letter, it was totally bland.  (One and done!)

Yesterday I made an old favorite, white chicken chili and this evening I'm trying out a sausage and spinach quiche.

Okay!  Because I've an exaggerated distaste for touching any raw pork product, opening the package is the worst part of this process.  When I watched this clip (from the Today Show) a few months ago, I mentally filed their hack away.   Lucy and Ethel, stand aside!

Unfortunately, I'm telling y'all it didn't work.  And I've probably 100 more wooden skewers remaining.  Maybe next time I'll spring for the extra $$$ and buy those already cooked sausage patties.   How do you prepare your ground pig?

Well, it's almost time for the reveal.
I hope everyone's staying warm tonight; take good care of yourself!

Hugs, Myra

* Cancel that!
Last evening I actually applauded at the conclusion of Chicago Med.  Any other fans out there?

  1. I'm sorry to hear you couldn't enjoy some of that snow that came through the South, Myra, but we only got two inches. Now, comes the icy rain and no way of getting out of our driveway unless the Lord decides it's time for the rapture! Stay warm and safe, dear friend!

  2. That was a funny video but I knew that wouldn’t work. I use chef gloves when I am touching meat. My son who I call Foodie and who is a dietitian, turned me into these gloves and now I just grab and touch the protein without getting the icks. Great when applying rub to meat, making meatloaf etc. I take a small steak knive and slice lengthwise on the tube sausage and then grab it with my gloved hand! Easy, quick and then I toss the gloves! Or you can buy sausage at the butcher and they plop it on that butcher paper and you don’t have to touch it. I don’t like touching raw meat - I guess my mom didn’t allow me to play with my food as a baby!

Sorry no snow - I feel that way when temperatures drop and there’s a hint of snow and it never comes. Big disappointment.

    Have a wonderful weekend

  3. I'd be glad to let you have some of our snow. We had 9 1/2 inches Sunday and Monday and the last time I was out, we had another 3 inches and still coming down.

  4. Every place I ever lived in had dishwashers and I NEVER used them. I like to wash dishes the old fashioned way.
I'm sure some of your blogger friends (including me) could send you some snow. Looks great from a window but it's a nightmare to deal with outside.
Let's hope your neck of the woods will get a light, pleasant snow. Winter's not over yet!
    I'm always cautious about cooking pork....sometimes I over-cook it.

  5. I'm happy to say, we didn't get snow either. Thankfully we only had rain. And today is supposed to be sunny and warmer once more ! I can do without snow very well, but I do need the sunshine and warmth. I do not like being cold at all. Hopefully you will enjoy your new dishwasher. It's all a matter of what you get used to. Love, ma

  6. Sadly, I/we have had not a dishwasher in like 12 years...and wouldn't even know how to use one, LOL. No snow here in Florida, just bitter cold, sigh. Wishing you a beautiful day, my friend.

  7. bob fusses if I touch his sausage to open it. I use scissors to cut off the end and he hates that. he uses a knife to puncture it and tears it carefully so he can slice off a piece and use the paper to wrap it again. I don't touch it or eat it. it hates me. its not pork I hate its chicken. I can not eat chicken if I touch it raw and cook it. dumb I know. I can eat bought fried chicken or some that others cook but not if I have to touch it. I get sick at the smell of boiling a chicken. I do not cook chicken. I buy the rotisserie at Publix or WM.
we have had the hook up for a dishwasher in the hole it would fit in for 35 years, the shelf bob built has our microwave in the top and trash cans under the shelf. I have never desired one because I hate cooking, I only have a few dishes, and if they were in the dish washer would have none to use. I prefer washing them in the sink.
Just thought of the pork/chicken thing.... I have to bleach the counter if either of those are used...
sorry you missed your snow, we are still praying for rain... 18 spits of moisture this morning, not rain just mist. do not want snow or the temps that go with it... I have been freezing at 45 to 55 degrees, heat running, flannel gown, sweater over gown, socks on feet. two sweaters at once to walk the dog. today was 66 and I wore one orange hooddie.

  8. Praying for Tom's and your good health.

I am intrigued. Do you stir your soup clockwise or anti-clockwise. Does it make any difference? How about tea and coffee?

Did you know that in the Northern hemisphere most people stir their drinks clockwise; whilst it's the opposite in the South? In Australia the soup falls all over the place because theyr'e upside down.

    God bless.

  9. Oh, but you topped yourself, great post. I had to smile as I read this in the middle of the post:
And why do I think my middle name is Betty Crocker?......
I do not know why but it struck my funny bone when you threw that in. LOL
Funny the dishwasher. We do not have one here in the RV of course, but when my sister leased our home in NC I got onto her about not using the dishwasher! For one person she said, "Just because it is there, I do not have to use it!"
When I read that statement in your post I though of my dear sister may she RIP!
Anyway for many reasons this visit was very good.
    Love ya!

  11. I guess I am the odd ball in this group. I really never give a thought to opening the meat packages or cooking pork or chicken. I do keep things clean and dispose of the juices asap.
We have had our new dishwasher just exactly a year ago this week. It was a gift from our small group bible study.. After having a broken dishwasher still under the sink for 7 years...I think this new one is a God-send. My dishes are cleaner and the washer is very economical and earth friendly. I do understand how you feel but its been wonderful for me.
Myra, I love your style of writing and the giggles you give me to start my day.
Sorry you didn't get your snow. We have only had snow 2 times in the 17 years we have lived here in the greater Sacramento,CA area. It was fun but not safe for us "flat-landers" haha..

  12. We've had dishwashers for 50 years now. I use them for storage and wash by hand. They are supposed to save water and be more hygienic. But so far we haven't gotten sick. 😊

  13. Oh my, I guess I never thought that much about handling meat before in my life! Goodness gracious! I must say I'm not crazy about cutting up a chicken and I try to buy it already cut up, but still I have to handle it to season it and put it in the pan. I love to pat a meat loaf into shape, and I don't mind cutting up a roast into stew meat. Maybe cause I was born on a farm? But we left when I was 5/almost 6, so I never really experienced farm life, but my mother was a farmer's wife in her heart until the day she died, even though he went to work at the Post Office and she went to work as a secretary for the Sheriff's office, she was still a farmer's wife at heart. And I learned how to cook from watching her. (but I won't go near a live chicken or rooster if my life depended on it). I'm sorry the snow snubbed you. We didn't get any either, but of course, if we had it would have made the news! LOL. No dishwasher here...the one we had leaked and so we got rid of it. I didn't want to wake up to a flood. It's just the two of us most of the time, so I have no problem keeping up with the dishes. When we have the kids over they jump in and wash them for me, so that is a blessing. Some of our best conversations have been while doing the dishes together. Once in a blue moon hubby will come and dry the dishes for me when he sees the stack approaching the ceiling. Then it's like playing Jenga to get the dishes off the stack without a major crash. LOL. I hope you enjoy your new DW. You may find out you love it. Take pictures of it and let us know all about it when it comes, even if you don't use it, it will make good "blog fodder". Love ya dear friend.

    1. Jenga ... you're so funny! I usually leave them on the rack to air dry behind the bifold door. For some reason that drives Tom crazy and he'll come around with a towel. What a life!

  14. I am happy and content to never see snow in person, ever again. Sorry! Touching pork doesn't bother me. I just use a knife to open those packages. I did watch the video and it made me chuckle! I love my dishwasher and use it all the time. Joe and I were hooked on all three Chicago shows but I haven't been watching them the last couple of seasons. Might have to back-up and start watching again. Love ya!

  15. We were all a bit disappointed in our area as well....Our schools closed on Thursday for the anticipation of bad weather. It was cold..it rained...but no freeze and no snow. I take that back...a few flakes of snow came down but melted immediately. I don't really like meat of any kind which makes me not want to touch it. My husband loves deer meat...Not me! I'm probably the only person who orders a hamburger cut the meat and onions. lol.. Enjoy your new dishwasher...I may run mine twice a week and even those loads are light..don't like to cook! another LOL.

    1. Our schools closed Friday ... then nothing, nada! I need to be careful about calling, "Chicken Little", tho.
PS - Meat compromises 90% of my diet, but I draw the line at venison (Bambi).

  16. I laughed hard about your comment of the cold weather inviting you to eat. That's about all it takes for me, too! I bet the snow will show up soon! Maybe a few flakes will find their way to us in the desert!

  17. I process a tube of sausage differently depending on how I'm using it. For patties I slice crosswise through the plastic with a sharp knife, then use the plastic ring on the outside to lift the piece onto the cooking surface. If the sausage is going to be browned I will cut the end off, then squeeze the meat out by pushing from the other end.

  18. I hope Tom was okay with the two doctor appointments.
I am sorry you have the blues. People don't realize how much snow can make some people happy. We hadn't had any for ten years and we did get a snow day.
I looked at the sausage opening - but I didn't understand it - lol.
I use gloves and then throw them away. For all meats.
    Love, sandie

  19. No snow in SE Georgia either. Only heavy frost now rain. That's OK. The snow day we had in the 80's and then last Jan. 2018 was enough.
I know I've said it before but I don't miss having a dishwasher. The wiring is still there for whomever gets the house next but for now it's shelving and storage. For me that's much more practical.
Steve makes his own sausage from either pure ground venison or ground pork from a local breeder and butcher. That way there's no hidden ingredients in the meat that's harmful.
Hope Tom is OK? We had our 6 month ckups awhile back and Doc said everything is good.
Hope y'all stay warm and safe. It's another week "to get things right", as my dear step-Mom used to say. LOL
    Blessings. ☃️

  20. We don't use our dishwasher much anymore. I try to run it once in awhile to make sure it still works. We usually have so few dishes when we eat. Sorry you missed the snow. Sorry about your meatloaf. The white chicken chili sounds yummy and so does the quiche. Sorry about your pork issues. We eat pork chops often. Mark does them on the grill. I have to see where I can watch Chicago Med. Because of the fires it wasn't on here.

  21. My throw together dinner, which I love but probably wouldn't serve anyone else is a semi-chili. I cook ground turkey or chicken, add a can of beans and a can of tomatoes, an onion and seasoning. Easy, delicious and filled with protein. I make it at least once a week and it's perfect for winter.
