What was your after-school routine like when you were a kid?
Not being privy to bus transportation, I'd walk the 1-1/2 miles home -- a stack of books in my arms. (This, before backpacks were a thing.) No, it never occurred to me to complain.
First thing, call my mother at her office to let her know I'd arrived safely.
Then, as soon as I changed into my 'play clothes' I'd fill a bowl with vanilla ice milk and blanket it in Hershey's syrup. Stir like crazy, until the consistency resembled what we now know as a Wendy's 'frosty.'

January 26 is National Green Juice Day. (I guess it's true, everything really does have its day!) Do you juice, as in make your own in an attempt to get healthy? Do you do the green juices? What's your favorite kind of juice -- home blended or store bought, either one?
I love most greens, but actually prefer to chew my calories.

Remember the new dishwasher from Amazon?
I can't say enough good things about the delivery or packaging! Two thumbs up!
By the time we got it finally unwrapped, however, Tom discovered the existing cavity wasn't deep enough to accommodate what I now refer to as the Property Brothers thang.*

The original wall switch was meant for a non-existent garbage disposal, so the owners just cut a hole and hard-wired them to their dishwasher. (Yes, that's the same one that flooded our family room 6 years ago.)

In an effort to make it fit, Tom brought out the duct tape!

Good morning Myra...you gotta love the grocery list...I could just see mine going after these items...He would shop every single isle up and down before attempting to ask...only to be told it doesn't exist. ha ha...this one was funny. Glad you were able to get the dishwasher installed. something similar happened with us when we purchased a new double oven. Had to end up having a new cabinet built. Gurl....I know you enjoyed that homemade "Frosty" each day, after coming home from school. Tattoos....I'm with you!

ReplyDeleteMy after school, was get off the hated big yellow bus, walk 3 blocks, say Mama, I'm home, make a white bread and sugar sandwich. we had no ice cream. take it to my room, throw down the stack of books, yes no back pack, and read myself into another world.

DeleteI have no idea how far I walked home from elementary/junior high school, but the district policy was not to provide a bus for commutes less than a mile. (High school was way more than that, so a bus picked me up at the corner.) We lived to tell.

DeleteROFL at that last comment, what a great idea! I can hear Mr D now, "why didn't you answer the phone?" And life goes on. Great news on hubby getting the dish washer installed. I still haven't got my new light above the kitchen sink installed. Maybe some day...grrrr...and life goes on!!

ReplyDeleteI can’t remember what I ate afterschool. I know we didn’t eat sweets or snacks a lot so it was probably carrots which I loved.
Your parents sound really smart, not allowing you too many sweets. So much processed 'junk' food's out there on the aisles, sometimes I want to shudder.
DeleteI think it’s why I don’t have much of a sweet tooth to this day! I raised my boys that way - rarely did they have candy. I did bake and they always wanted Oreos like the other kids! Once they got older and had their little paperboy jobs they overdosed on sweets and now, they no longer crave sweets.
DeleteGeez...I wish I had seen that grocery list before I gave the real one to my husband this morning! I could have laughed and he could have blown a gasket trying to find that stuff! Maybe next time!

DeleteOH, that list!!! That's hysterical! And maybe a bit cruel...no telling what my hubby would come home with, but most likely he'd just grab whatever resembled these items. He's never been good at reading the details I put on my lists anyway. I'm proud that your hubby could actually rewire that and get it installed! I would definitely save up all the dishes and use that after all that work! LOL. It's Beautiful! Oh, I used to make milkshakes like that too. Actually I like to eat my ice cream like that. I don't add milk to it. I couldn't walk home from school. It was over 3 miles. My sister and I rode the bus home until she got old enough to stay after school for cheerleading practice. Then I'd go home with a friend many times and my mother would come pick me up at 5:00. I guess she must've gotten permission from my friends' mothers to let me stay there after school. There were several different friends whose mothers were at home, so I kind of rotated between them. Those were happy days! We lived out in the country and didn't have any neighbors to play with, so I loved going home with my friends. Happy memories. Thank you for making me think about that.

DeleteI always walked to and from school too but my whole town was only about a mile square so that was no big deal for us. Glad you got your dishwasher in. I had forgotten about ice milk and haven't heard of that in years. Now I want a dish of it!!
ReplyDeleteI don't think too many people have heard of ice milk. Back in the day, ice cream and real butter was "too dear" (expensive).

ReplyDeleteIs it the size of the tattoo you object to; or where on the body it is tattooed? Or the design? Or what it says? Or the picture itself, like some people have a picture of their girlfriend as a tattoo.
These days over here people drive their children to school and pick them up every day.

Some tattoo artists are really good -- I just don't care to see them. I love what my DIL told her girls when they were teens, "Why would you want to put a bumper sticker on a Bentley?"

That grocery list is awesome!! I need to go back and find and read your post about the dishwasher from Amazon. I've ordered a LOT of things from Amazon, but I didn't know you could order a dishwasher! Why am I surprised? ha!

DeleteLet's see if I can remember 100 years ago when I was once school age: my routine was either walk or ride my bike home. Since an adult of some kind was always there, I would either do homework or go outside and play. I spent a lot of time in the woods, with friends or whatever. As long as it was away from the house.

DeleteSounds like you were quite an obedient child when you got home - same here. My hubs loves V8 - too hard on my stomach. I love wheat grass drinks but they are very expensive. I agree with tattoos. Tom and duck tape are miracles - how in the world did he get that in? Love the list - my husband will go to the store with a list of three things and call me twice! :)

DeleteI love your answer to #1. I walked home but I was just a block away from the school. V8 is good. Mark used to drink it for years and then stopped. I don't know why. I am with you with what I need more of in my life. More exercise and less worry. That had to be so frustrating with the dishwasher. Glad Tom got it all worked out.

DeleteYour Tom is a genius in my book. Putting in that dishwasher is awesome. Our friend put ours in just one year ago. I have been blessed and love it. I really feel things get sanitized (especially when we are both under the weather).
