Wondering, Wandering Hodgepodge

... with our Quiz-mistress, Joyce.   Welcome back!

What's something bizarre you've seen or heard recently?

Like many, we've been caught up with the mysterious disappearance of Carlee Russell.
It almost sounds like an episode of 48 Hours Mystery:

|.....She calls 9-1-1 to report a toddler walking alongside a busy Birmingham-area freeway.

.....a second call to a friend. A scream. Then nothing.

.....Mercedes left running with her personal effects inside.

.....Rumors of dwarf sightings. (Seriously!)

.....49 hours later Carlee shows up back home on foot.

So far, police haven't said much, but I understand they're holding a press conference this afternoon.

* UPDATE *

Sadly, it seems Carlee's abduction turned out to be a hoax.
Here's a recap of today's press conference

https://www.newsweek.com/carlee-russell-researched-amber-alerts-before-abduction-1814146

July 18 is National Sour Candy Day.  Who knew?  Do you like sour candies or other foods with 'sour' flavors?  Kimchi, rhubarb, gooseberries, tamarind, dill pickles, sour cherries, sauerkraut, cranberries and grapefruit, for instance.  Of the sour foods listed, which is your favorite?

I'm not usually a fan of 'sour'
but I love grapefruit.

Share a favorite memory of an aunt or uncle.

Gosh, I had so few relatives (who) I saw more than a half dozen times.  My choices:

Uncle Lu-the-minister and his wife who, I believed, hated little children.

Adele and Mike seemed nice, but were caught up with social functions and their 4 perfect children, always trying to 'out-do.'

We cousins adored crazy, eccentric Edric-the-undertaker. His stories kept us in stitches.

I'm going with my mother's bachelor brother, Roland.
As a little girl, I thought him so handsome.

He'd always made time, letting me tag along to the barn or help drive the tractor.  What a tease!  When I fell in love with a particular calf, he pointed out its name should be 'hamburger.'  (Noooooo!)

We shared a fondness for Bubble-up (pop) and lefse, thick with butter.  To this day, I can't hear 'Tom Dooley' without remembering him teaching me to sing it.

How would you describe your ability to manage stress?

Pretty good, I think.  It depends.

If it's anything within my control, I try to adopt a realistic posture -- and fall apart after the fact.

Second.  I'm thinking of the long hours spent in hospital waiting rooms.  An old childhood coping mechanism is mentally transporting myself to another place where I'm the film's director and can control the outcome.

What do you think about when you let your mind wander?

See above.
Sometimes, if I'm caught up in a good book, I get to imagining who I'd cast to play the parts of the characters -- actors or ordinary folks I've known.  Anything's possible in my daydreams!

Insert your own random thought here.

Whew, I'm letting my tongue go rogue again.
Let's just leave with a smile?

(Boy, I'll bet he wishes he had a hat)

(This is me)

What-cha say, let's go out there and enjoy a great day?!

Hugs, Myra

  2. I'm very curious about the Carlee story as well. It's definitely bizzare. Few things surprise us these days. So much that makes the news is crazy. That hat pretty much sums up things right now lol.

    1. I suppose this afternoon's press conference will put rumors to rest. Just pray for the sake of her parent and law enforcement, this wasn't a hoax.

  3. That story was pretty weird; I heard about it but didn't look up many details.

  4. One of my pet hates is seeing people wear hats like that.

It is so nice and loving to remember relatives and friends. Especially those who have been kind to us.

So ... you like to cast actors to play the parts of characters? Who would you cast for Father Ignatius? How do you visualise him? I have deliberately never described him fully in my books leaving it to the readers to imagine him as they wish. The same for the location - all I say is a town in Northern England in the 1950s.

    God bless, Mevely.

    1. Thanks for asking! Almost from the time I 'met' Fr. Ignatius, I visualize Robert Young -- from 'Father Knows Best' and later, 'Marcus Welby, MD.' Careful with his words, direct but kind.
Unfortunately, when it comes to Northern England, I'm visually challenged.

    2. An elderly Marcus Welby/Robert Young. Yes, that looks good. You're a great casting director.

Northern England - 1950s. Close nit community. Small towns and villages. Old brick or stone houses close to each other - some attached to each other called terraced houses. That is six or more houses sharing the same dividing wall. So if you are house No. 2 you share a wall on the left with No. 1 and on the right with No. 3. Plenty of chimneys burning coal or wood to keep warm. Everyone knows everyone and each others business. But mostly kind people caring for each other.

I remember being told they leave the back door open and no worries of anyone breaking in or intruding to burgle. Children play in the streets. If any misbehave you'd tell their parents. So youngsters were always under observation by other neighbours. Cobbled stones in the streets - not many cars. Horse drawn carriages. Just after the war - so some items like food still rationed with coupons in exchange of buying goods.

See photo of coble stoned street and houses attached to each other:

    3. Thanks so much, Victor! It all sounds terribly romantic, and now I'm wishing I could teleport myself back to that 50's neighborhood.

  5. I do love sour dill pickles and sauerkraut too. They are different from each other, but both are on the sour side. I'd prefer sweet, but don't eat many sweets at all anymore. Watermelon is one sweet I can still enjoy! It's cool and refreshing in the summertime. I do love getting lost in a good book most of them are better than going to the movies. I read a lot these days. My doctor says that is good as it keeps your mind active. He encouraged me to keep on reading. The biggest problem I have is getting any exercise these days. I sit and read too much. Even with the strict diet I've been on I haven't lost much weight at all. Hope you are keeping cool there, we're still roller coasting with temps more low than high. I try to enjoy the sun when I see it. Love, m

    1. I, too, tend to be sedentary during these hot sticky days of Summer. In the southern part of these states, people are becoming physically ill and even dying from the heat. Best not to take any chances!

  7. I have been following Carlee's story also. I keep waiting for a final press conference. I am mainly just glad she found her way home.
Your post has made me think of my favorite relatives with such fondness. (I had no trouble picking my favorites)

  8. I know nothing about that first story you shared. I also don't watch the news because it's too depressing. I enjoyed reading your answers. I hope the rest of your week goes well. Take care.

  9. That news story must be local to where you are? I haven't heard of it, but do tell us what you hear later, okay? Now we are all curious! I love the picture of the two men, with one in the wheelchair. I enlarged the picture to read their hats and had a good chuckle. Your Uncle Roland was very good looking. Wonder why he never married? You are adorable in the picture. "Hang Down Your head, Tom Dooley"...I remember that one for sure. the common sense picture at the ball game is funny...took me a minute to figure it out, however. When I got it, I laughed cause I was so dumb not to see it at first. LOL. Have a great day my friend. Stay cool, calm and collected, and it will be our "Secret". (remember that?)

    1. Yes, that news story originates from the Birmingham metro -- but we saw this morning, both on the Today show and Good Morning America. I just heard the police's news conference is being held at 2:30 so ya, I'll share that link on here after the fact. Scary times!

  10. thanks for the laugh, silly man with a hat on his head. doesn't surprise me at all.
I love sour lemon drops, and most sour candy. alas nevermore.
I was close to all my aunts and uncles except for one that i dearly hated. he and his wife lived in Miami and lucky me, we only saw them maybe 5 times in my life. when i say hated i mean actively.
Daddy sister was my second mom, i loved her, daddy brothers and their wives were a huge part of my life. especailly Uncle jack because he lived a few blocks from us, Aunt helen next door. Mother sister, was more a sister to me than an aunt. she was 9 when I was born. I guess out of 7 uncles 1 aunt to only dislike one is pretty good. the biggest problem was.... out of all of us, daddy and his acoholic brother were the only POOR ones in the family. the rest of them had a LOT of money compared to us. more than they needed. no one felt like sharing, except for aunt helen who poured her money on me and my family just like a mother would. need shoes, she bought them, she would give me her Penny's charge card in August to shop for school clothes, 5 shirts, 5 pants, undewear and socks and shoes. at Christmeas she gave me the card and told me i could have 100 for the two of them, which back then was like 300 now

I do not like sour candy - I am more of a sweet eater. lol
    Glad you can handle stress.
You know I know what you mean by spending time making a movie or dreams where I am the producer. Has saved me many a times when reality was so hard. lol

  14. The Carlee story hasn't hit down here, but I don't watch the news. I should rephrase that to say it hasn't been in The Lakeland Ledger yet. That does sound crazy. I will check out the link you gave us. Another fun Hodgepodge!! Sending hugs.
