Sunday letters - Episode #5

Dear Cathy (commenter)

Thank you for asking about my mother's Springerle recipe.  Here it is!

I don't see anything about being adjusted for high-altitude baking -- but like everything else she made, I'm pretty sure that was the case.

I've got a question!
Like Springerle, I'm remembering another German cookie she made.  Hard (think, near tooth breaking), it had a white-ish, slightly sour icing.  The only way I thought it edible was dunked in my father's creamed coffee.  Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Dear Blog friend-who-shall-remain-anonymous,

So sorry you made the decision to step away from blogging.  But I feel strongly, this should be fun.  When it starts feeling obligatory, something's gotta give.

Just wanted to say, I miss you.

Dear Andy,

I was sure surprised to see you on your shiny red mower yesterday -- cheerfully criss-crossing our front lawn.
As I texted Pastor Janet, we're humbled.  And enormously grateful.

At the same time, I'm not accustomed to accepting favors.  My dad was the same way, "Ask not."
Not 24 hours later it's still bothering me.

Dear son,

I was surprised -- and a little sad -- to discover you and Lois deactivated your Facebook accounts.  But when you explained why?  Well, my heart filled with pride!

You exlained, "We each have our careers that take us away from home.  We came to a mutual realization -- when we're home, she's on one couch with her tablet; I'm on the other with mine."

You continued, "We'd rather look at each other instead of our screens."

Does he miss it?  "Not for a minute."

Dear Momma in Heaven,

Was that you chuckling I heard?
Yes, I'm sure it was!  Right after I told Tom I wanted a cobbler apron for Christmas.

How many times did you admonish me, "Go put on an apron!"   Eventually I'd capitulate, but not without grumbling.

Today?  I don't consider myself a sloppy person, but I'm sure weary of pre-treating all these stains.

So friends,
Have you begun making your Christmas lists?

Wishing y'all a relaxing afternoon!  Stay safe!

Hugs, Myra

  1. What a lovely selection of messages. Thanx Mevely. I like the first image with the UK Royal Mail post-box.

What a coincidence ... only two days ago a neighbour rang our doorbell and asked if he could mow our lawn in the front garden. What a kind gesture.

I gave up on FB because I could not work it out. Too many buttons to click. I only use Twitter to post the links to my Blogger articles. I find Blogger much easier to use.

It'll soon be Christmas! God bless you dear friend.

    1. Yes, I've found there are far fewer mean-spirited people here in Blogland. (And we can always block the trolls!)

  2. Facebook does have a way of sucking the time out of your life, doesn't it. I have to temper my time there or I get lost in it. Not giving it up, but doing my best to check the time I spend there. Bless your neighbor for mowing the grass. I know it was done with love. Have a good week ahead, Myra. Keeping you both in my prayers! xo

  5. first i want to give congratulations to your oh so smart son and his wife. the world would be a better place without FB. i find myself mindless scrolling looking at photos and i see it in all the doc offices, a couple comes in, they both start scrolling. bob hates when i get on any one of my devices... in commericals i see ads that show 5 family memebers all with a device.
I have never had a problem with accepting a gift of a device like mowing the lawn. accepting help is a gift that i rather have than a wrapped gift i did not need. the grass was a gift. say thank you for blessing me. I have never worn an apron, my mother and grand mothers and aunts always wore one. can't wait to see if you get one... agree with what you said about fun blogging not a job.

    1. I agree ... but may still require an intervention. On the few occasions we eat 'out', I still whip out my phone b/c Tom can't hear me over the restaurant noise and I refuse to yell.

  6. Dear Myra, I want to thank you for your prayers for my son. I guess you missed my post that said he is doing fine. All his tests and cat scans came back clear. His cancer did not spread anywhere else. Thanks be to God for his many mercies. He'll be checked now every 3 month to make sure he stays that way. But for now he is resting and healing and a very happy man.

  7. Ditching Facebook by your son and DIL was a stroke of genius, Myra. They obviously understand the importance of truly being present for one another in the moment. I've not regretted being off Facebook for one moment. And it is sad when someone whose blog we love decides to leave. But you're right - it should be fun, not a chore.
    Blessings!

  8. Yes, I remember being allowed to dunk into milked coffee, one of the grown up things allowed at times. LOL And we too miss the blogging friend and her wisdom. BUT, but understand.
I must say, I love the 2 cent stamp you use. Now that is a memory. LOL again.
I ACTUALLY should us an apron cooking or playing, I always need a place to wipe my hands. LOL
Love from over here enjoying FALL. But missing Florida!
    Sherry & jack, just waiting....

  9. Myra,

Thank you for sharing your mother's Springerle cookie recipe. Am I understanding correctly that once she mixed up her batter, she place it in a pan? Not rolled out and cut or anything fancy? I will have to compare her recipe to the one I use. I'm sure I'll have other questions since you're the only person I know who's had these type cookies. I think I used orange extract in mine. Hmmm, now to find my recipe. I enjoyed reading your dear post. This is a nice idea! :) Have a wonderful week!

    1. Thank you, Cathy! Yes, to the best of my recollection that's what she did. Of course, being honest, I never paid much attention.

  10. I'm wondering about the German cookie your mother made that was so hard with the slightly sour whitish icing. Not sure. It wasn't an anise cookie was it? Just wondering. How wonderful of your neighbor to mow for you. That is priceless and just say thankyou and thanks be to God! You could bake him some cookies or something if you insist on doing something. I love aprons, and wear them a lot especially for holidays because I hate to be caught in my old house clothes when the guests arrive, so I get dressed in decent clothes and put on an apron. I am constantly splashing something, tea, grease pops, whatever I happen to be cooking or eating...I really need to start using a bib. LOL. How sweet of your kids to do away with FB. yep, I agree with them. I've cut way back on my use of it. I spend more time here in Blogland than FB, but I try to limit that too. I just can't sit still that long. I enjoyed your letters...neat idea. Why didn't I think of that? I may borrow the idea sometime if you don't mind. Have a blessed and wonderful week.

    1. Yes, it did have a distinctive anise flavor! Good idea about the cookies; Tom said we really need to invite he and Pastor Janet over for supper and get to know them better before they begin building their home next door. Wish I could take credit for the 'letters', but that was borrowed a few years ago from another blogger. Borrow away!

    2. My grandmother used to make a wonderful anise cookie, but it needed a certain temperature in the house to set up so the little white cap would form on the top, and when she moved to Florida from Pennsylvania she never could get it just right again, and we missed out on those cookies. But I've never forgotten the flavor. Oh, so the "letter" idea isn't your own? Well, then, alrighty...I may just use it sometime. IT's a fun way to communicate with those we love/loved/wish we could talk to. Great idea. You always make me smile too, BTW

  11. I like this idea, Myra! I chuckled over a couple of the letters and sighed over a couple too. You are making me think.
    THANK YOU!

  12. I so loved your letters, each one. I really liked the one to your mother about the apron. My mom almost always had an apron on (I've never worn them much and in fact don't even own one.) I imagine when I retire I will do a little more cooking, so I many need to buy me one, as I'm not particularly neat any more at all. lol

Hope you have a great day!

    1. Thanks, Cathy! I still have one of my mother's -- she sewed many -- but it's really too tight 'up top.' I like the cobbler variety so I'm not having to put on and take off over the top of my head.

  13. Girl, you are so funny! I love your writing style. I am the same way when someone does something nice for me. I have learned to grit my teeth and be gracious with my thanks since a pastor's sermon on denying others of the blessing of serving. Never thought of it like that. :/ Yep, still bugs me when I realize Mom was right all those years ago. And yes, I think many are waking up to what a trap social media is. I have not quit FB or blogging completely, but I am doing it much less. Checking and commenting get to be sort of a compulsion and I don't need that! Hope you are having a great week!

  15. Before I go on, you know me and my war and peace comments miles long. Prayers always for you and Tom. You are two kind souls. SO happy to know you here. I checked into blocking the trolls but did you know they can see and read our stuff? AAcckk! That cookie has me baffled. My cousin Sharon had beautiful handwriting and so many wodnerful cookie recipes but that one you mention I can not place. Going to make me crazy! Heeheehee. Love the smiles and your son adn DIL are smart cookies to leave FB. If it werent for the friends I would kick it to the curb. I love how you make us smile. I think sometime my posts offend some people but there are people I try to rwach, clodse to me, who have no clue. Other than prayer I am not sure what else I could do. HUSG and LOVE
