They say the kitchen is the heart of a home. Tell us about YOUR kitchen. What is your favorite part of your kitchen?
Like its owners, our kitchen isn't without a bit of wear and tear. The cabinets could use a good refinishing; yet I'm drawn to their hom-ey feel. Except for the dishwasher, we've replaced all the appliances. Hands down, the Keurig coffee maker's my favorite!
My only regret is a lack of counter space. Too, before we expressed interest in buying, the previous owners removed the wallpaper border that I loved. Oh well, I'm over it now.

If money were no object, what would be your 'dream kitchen'?
That is, if it came with a personal chef I could sit on that bar stool with a glass of wine and watch him work!

If you could invite anyone in the world (past or present) to come visit with you in your kitchen, who would it be and why.
Needs no explanation ... my mother. I'd give anything to watch her making the Springerle cookies my dad loved, and Grandma Willer's candy. One of these days I'm going to try my own hand at its simple goodness.

ReplyDeleteYou mentioned your mother made Springerle cookies. Several years ago I tried making a batch when failed. The design was barely visible and the recipe just didn't have a nice taste - very bland. I'd love to know how your mother did it and what your thoughts are on those cookies. Maybe, I just did something wrong. I've made hard candy in the past but my recipe uses corn syrup and granulated sugar. I don't recall if it has salt or not and I added my flavoring at the end after I removed the hot candy from the burner. I haven't made any in a few years. Maybe, I ought to make some cinnamon or peppermint candy for Christmas. :) I enjoyed reading your answers. Thanks for sharing!

DeleteI'm with you on the person that would invite to my kitchen is my mother because I often say to Bob and he says the same thing about his mother that we would like them to see the kitchen that we have now now it was last remodeled in 19 88 and needs to be remodeled again but it is so much better than what they had they would think it is in a castle! The sink in your mother's kitchen is exactly what we had in my mother's kitchen and I'm thinking that that house might have been built in the 50s. Most of the houses then had those type sinks. If I had unlimited sources I would take everything out of the kitchen down to the wall board and start over and leave it with the same footprint and leave it with new cabinets and new appliances and a new sliding glass door only I want it to be a French door
ReplyDeleteI THINK our apartment/quad was built in the 40's, right after the war. I totally get what you mean about my mother glimpsing today's kitchen. Their retirement home in Florida was decidedly middle-class, but at least it afforded her more room.

DeleteI love our kitchen, although our cabinets could certainly use some upgrading. At least I do have my "personal" chef in Danny! And that's a hoot about you using the drawer handle as a bottle opener, Myra. I'd say quite clever.

Thank you for participating in this Tuesday 4 meme. I love being with you in your kitchen, and I also love the picture from your childhood kitchen that you found online! I think that is so cool. Are you saying you don't have a dishwasher? We don't either. We tried to have one, but it started leaking and was costing more money than it was worth, so we just got rid of it and we wash the dishes by hand. Which is fine until we have a large dinner party, but that's okay too. Yes, wouldn't it be wonderful to have a chef? Wow! I could get used to that. Yep. I sure could. Love this, and thank you for playing along.

Nope, because the inherited dishwasher wasn't hooked up properly -- and we hardly used it -- in less than a year the parquet flooring in the next room began lifting because of water leakage. Ugh. I'm not anxious to replace it and just hung that red/white 'skirt' shown in the 2nd picture to hide the hole.
DeleteYou have a lovely kitchen. I can't see the point of the previous owners removing the wall paper border. That's mean. Here in the UK we have laws about fixtures and fittings - things that cannot be removed by the seller of the house unless agreed in the contract.
ReplyDeleteWhen we bought our house, we moved in in the dark at about 4:00pm. The previous owner had removed all the light bulbs in the house. How insane and stupid. We had to buy new light bulbs to light the house.
Oddly enough, when we left the house we'd just sold, we had left the new owners a bottle of wine and a welcome home card.

DeleteI don't think it was out of meanness they removed the border. The common rooms were all painted bold (forrest green and deep maroon) colors. It had sat on the market for some time, and I suspect the real estate agent suggested they tone it down to attract more buyers.
Okay I want a kitchen like that and a chef too, only I'd be sitting there drinking a Diet Coke. lol

I do have a question about the candy recipe. If it cooks to the crack stage I am assuming it is a hard candy.. I am just wondering about how it is pulled. I think it would be fun to try it.

DeleteI don't recall her ever pulling the candy. She must have used a knife. Yes, they were hard -- a little larger than a Luden's cough drop, twisted on both ends and wrapped in pieces of waxed paper. She'd fill little cookie tins and give to neighbors and coworkers as Christmas presents.
I would love to have mama visit while I made some GOOD soup. She would be proud of me, I think. LOL I love the cabinets here. they are over 25 years old and look practically new. I had a great cabinet maker at that time.

The kitchen does always seem to me the heart of the home, but sadly I have even less counter space than you do. I guess my favorite would have to be my Keurig coffee maker too. I can't even start the day without a cup of coffee. My dream kitchen would include enough space for a table and chairs . I'd love an eat in kitchen. But here it is only galley style. It has everything I need except space for everything I have. My daughter has a kitchen island with stools to sit at for breakfast, I guess that would be good too. That and more cupboard space would suit me to a tee.

ReplyDeleteI'm still in shock over the tiny kitchen I have here in the TN boonies. The kitchen in my TX house had a huge pantry, two refrigerators, and more counter space than I knew what to do with.
My present kitchen is so tiny that a Muppet wouldn't have room to move.
...but I have learned to manage.....
A Muppet ... hahahaha! It seems Adult-ing is little more than learning to adapt to all life throws our way.
