Currently, from the slow lane

Good morning!

Outside my window?
Google Girl says it's 52*.  Never mind that the mercury's supposed to climb a little later.  After 7 long months, I've donned my furry "Mrs. Claus" housecoat.  Welcome, stranger.

I'm feeling.
It's hard to explain ... the rush I felt watching my dad's 8mm-turned-DVD home movies.  The quality is horrible.  But they're all there -- grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins.  I felt like pointing and exclaiming "Look!" to someone who'd get it, too.  But no.  With the exception of one cousin, they've all gone on before.

I sit, transfixed by my father's adoring gaze.  How I wish I could read lips!

... mother's easy laughter.

And there?  Beside my crib?

One and the same that sits beside my 'grown-up crib.'

6 years of memories -- Day #1 kindergarten ... the 'Chapel kids' possee ... splashing in Sarasota Bay ... posing at Cypress Gardens.  My unsmiling aunt and uncle standing awkawardly aside.  65 years later, their body language speaks volumes.

I'm awed to witness my exuberance; the joy in simply being alive.  When did I become so serious?

I think it was (author) Sarah Ban Breathnach who suggested finding a photo of oneself feeling ridiculously happy and frame it.  Maybe she's still in there.

I'm thankful.
That Tom's temps are back to normal.  Maybe this means the infection's abating?  We see the neurosurgeon on Wednesday; I'm praying he might shed more light on this 'thing.'

One of my favorite things.
Has anyone tried Tyson's new grilled chicken strips?  Yum!  Publix was out of the strips, but we enjoyed the blackened filets last night with (new-to-us) Alabama White Sauce.

Good to know.
Despite being paranoid (*grin*), I don't dwell on the possiblity of a break-in.  Nevertheless, I had such a nightmare recently.  We've no pricy home-security system.  But!  It occurred to me, the siren feature on our weather radios might raise the dead.  At least the neighbors.  One now resides within easy reach of my bedside.  Just hope I never mix it up with my phone!

😍

T-t-t-hat's all folk!
Have yourselves a great weekend!

Hugs, Myra

  1. Ah yes, those old 8mm. I believe they were 3 minute films and too many of us tried to get TOO much on them. I scanned too fast and they are not clear, BUT but like you said just seeing and knowing who the actors are is FUN.
You said: I'm awed to witness my exuberance; the joy in simply being alive. When did I become so serious?
........ And I want to say amen for us also. BUT I guess life got in the way.
Love you lady and always enjoy the visit here with you,
Hugs to Bro Tom and glad to hear the temps are better....

    1. I can only imagine what my father -- and his generation -- would think of today's technology. Videos on a cell phone, wow!

  3. You are blessed to have all those great memories. Being happy should be a way of life. It's too short to be anything but happy, I think. Glad the fever is gone and hope it's a sign that healing is being done. It will be a comfort to hear what the doctor has to say. Not knowing is a terrible thing. Hope you have a great weekend and enjoy your lower temps. We are in the 50's but it's not supposed to get any warmer for us.

    1. Thank you, Ma! I hope you do the same, and it doesn't get terribly cool too soon.

  4. the radio is a great idea... the siren would scare a burglar I think plus set of the barking dogs to add to the melee. I wish I had movies of my childhood, hardly any photos and I have forgotten most of my childhood, a movie or photo would jog the old memory chip into action... wish I were there to watch with you and would love to see the quilt holder from the past and in the movie. Yay on the temps down, prayers for this to be diagnosed or GONE. I have 6 first cousins still around, 3 on each of paternal/maternal and all their children bring it to a dozen. but i never see them.

    1. I remember when you shared those photos from the last cousins' reunion! Looked like such fun! Unfortunately, due to geographical differences, my cousins and I had little to nothing in common.

  5. What a surplus of special memories. You are fortunate to have home movies. I only have photos taken with my father's ancient (1950s) Polaroid camera - which I carefully kept until it was "lost" when I moved.

Heck, I can't even remember when I felt ridiculously happy (if ever...) but I yearn for my youth and health.

Delightfully cool temps here in TN and I love it.

    1. I remember seeing those early Polaroid cameras and thinking they (owners) must be terribly rich.
Me, too ... on the yearning part. Meanwhile, there's always wine!

    2. Ironically, we always thought people who had movie cameras were wealthy (I'm not kidding). My father bought the Polaroid in 1957 or 58 - when it was a new novelty. I'm wondering what he paid for it way back then.

  6. Praying again for Tom and you.

It's so good you managed to re-master the old 8mm films. I have a few still in their old formats; possibly totally spoilt with age. Oh ... the memories they would rekindle.

Good memories help sustain us when we feel down. That and chocolates too!

Keep smiling my friend. God bless you all.

I wish I might take credit for remastering those films -- but no, I wouldn't dare. Raising my glass to good memories!

  7. We are lucky that my Dad had our old childhood 8mm movies transferred to VHS. Now I need to transfer them digitally.

  8. My family never did the home movies but they had slides. When our extended family gets together (which isn't very often), we try to watch them again, at least a few that we remember. I do have video tapes of some of our family events, but I find I don't want to watch them yet. They make me just a bit too weepy. Maybe sometime I will get brave enough to watch them...good thing we still have a VCR. Just don't know if it is hooked up to the TV. The DVD thing is a good idea, but expensive. Hmmm...oh well...maybe some day. I do hope Tom is getting stronger and better each day. Praying for him. and you. Blessings.

    1. I totally get the 'weepy' part, Pam. I've no idea in what cabinet Tom stuck our VCR; I just downloaded an app where I can watch these on my (desktop) computer.

  9. I'll keep praying for Tom and you, Myra! And there's something so magical about being able to "relive" old movies and recordings of the people we knew and loved. You've actually given me a great idea for a blog, believe it or not, as I have an old black and white photo of my brother and me when I was 6 and he was 3. Blessed and happy times!

  10. Thank goodness Tom's fever seems to be abating! Do keep us posted when you see the doctor! How sweet to have those 8mm films preserved on the DVDs. Interesting, isn't it, how perceptions change as we get older and think back. Love to you!! xo

    1. You mean your employer doesn't carry that (white sauce)? Were it not for the Jack's commercials, I don't suppose we'd have ever looked for it.

  15. I've just bought an inexpensive whistle/siren to carry with me. Not that I'm paranoid, but realize it's better to be prepared. Haven't tested it yet. Didn't want to scare the neighbors.
    Continuing prayers for Tom's recovery.
