My mother totally defined the term, self-effacing ...
but was really tickled to be featured in an employee newsletter where she worked in the County Treasurer's office.
After she passed, I found this among her treasures in the hope chest.

ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of ice cream outside your window. Love your dogs. And the sausage rolls. Is that what you call them in the US? We also have pigs in blanket - these are sausages wrapped in bacon - not dough.

LOL on the ice cream! Sausage rolls are what we call them, yes. Not so healthy, but delish dipped in mayo and mustard. :)

Yes, they did! Anxious to make it at home, I asked the lady at the BBQ place -- shredded chicken and pork, potatoes, onion, tomatoes, corn, lima beans in a savory(?) BBQ sauce. There's several differing recipes out on line. But since Tom's not so fond of it, I'll continue to just buy a quart every so often.

LOL ... Tom said the same thing! I used to hate them myself, but these must have absorbed all the other good flavors.

DeleteI loved reading the story about your mother (and father too I assume)'s travels. They certainly saw a lot of the world. Did you get to go with them on any of those trips? Also, the "camp stew", we call that Brunswick Stew, and I just had some on our trip up in Georgia. It supposedly originated in Brunswick, GA, and originally was made with any kind of meat the hunters could bring home, squirrel, rabbit, venison, but now is mostly made with chicken and pork. And yes, the lima beans do soak up the goodness and become very tasty. I guess every region has their own version of this stew, but yours sounds exactly like what I had last week. It was so good. Loved all your pictures. That airplane hanging in your garage! Wow! Does it fly? Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteThat's really interesting about the Brunswick stew origins! I was only along on my parent's '57 trip to Europe; after I left home did they really begin to LIVE. (*smile*) The plane shown is one of Tom's remaining RC affairs -- that's his favorite hobby, building and flying.

Deletewow, you mom was a world traveler, it would have been easier to write the article on where she had NOT been. ha ha.... my mother would have love to go with her, she WANTED to be a traveler, but was married to daddy who made me just like him and we both complained if we had to drive 90 miles to visit his brother. love the stripes overhead and the cuties in the box. You done good, all new photos, i cheated and used old photos. maybe i should grab the cell and see what i can find that fits and do it again. hummmmm
ReplyDeletesorry for taking over your blog with blah blah but the camp stew flipped me back in time about 20 years. my brother had 60 acres of land in rural GA. about an hour from his house. he spent week ends there and built a cabine from his own trees and a fire place outside. he invited us to come stay and for dinner he cooked, CAMP Stew over the fire... turns out when I asked what he made it from he said I have no idea. I just grab cans of whatever is here, figure out how many people will eat and dump in a can per person... is that how you make yours
Funny, it was my dad who had a gypsy heart -- mother would have been perfectly content to stay home. I used to be like him, but now, even the occasional 80-mi. trip to UAB is tiresome.

I looked at the questions a couple of weeks ago and I decided I didn't have the brain power to think through my answers! I'll have to check into it again. The picture of the two pups in the box is adorable!!

Deletewhat fun this post was. loved hearing about your mom. is that tom's plane. very cool. the camp stew looks like something my hubby would love. me not so much cause i'm not fond of beans. your pups are precious. and honestly i see all the loving those jeans got. they lasted a good, long while. i don't know how you'll part with them? i have a shirt thats over 40 years old that had a similar story.
