Trains and boats … yesssssss!
Lots of tales, but I'm going with my family's 1957 transatlantic voyages aboard the Queen Elizabeth and Mary. If you'd like, you can read about it here.
The Orient Express is super luxurious with 5-star accommodations including real bedrooms, cocktail bars, etc. It stops along a route that includes London, Paris, Berlin, Bucharest, Venice, Paris, Prague and Istanbul. Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express is set on the train. You can choose your itinerary from the lists their site offers. I so enjoyed reading about OE's destinations …. but in the end I'd go with the Venice-to-London route via Vienna. I wonder what - if anything - I might remember.
Do you think you would enjoy a cruise? Where would you go?
Oh wow. 20 years ago I'd be ready in a heartbeat. I've been enormously fortunate to have cruised for many years.
Unfortunately … and despite the specter of C-19, I'm not enamored about today's mega ships … that look more like behemoths than actual ships. Sure, I understand profit-and-loss mentality, but miss the smaller passenger population and leisurely fine dining.
I still harbor the occasional fantasy of an European river cruise.
Given the time and the choice -- and money being no object -- will you travel to Europe via plane or luxury liner?
Definitely, a luxury liner. While (in the past) I've had occasion to fly practically all over the world, I'm never at ease.
'Must add, I'd be somewhat nervous on that luxury liner … why, what on earth would I have in common with the rest of those paying passengers?

Things aren't what they used to be, are they? Everything is big and commercial these days. Profit and loss accounts rather than gentle intimate luxury on a boat or train.

DeleteI don't do boats/planes but am a life long lover of trains. I get really really sick on boats and planes. since Europe is not for me, i would love to do the tour of the wild west by train..

DeleteYou have had marvelous travel adventures especially aboard the Queen Elizabeth and Mary! I would have liked to do a cruise and I might some day. I heard a story on the news of a cruise ship with just the workers aboard for 2 and a half months and they had no cases of the virus on it. They just couldn't find a port that would allow them to embark.

DeleteI do love travel, air was my choice until 9/ll and the less than friendly skies emerged. Of course in the last 20+ years it has been private coach. BUT, but I do envy you guys who traveled by train. Oh and ships, also my favorite. Hey maybe they are all my favorites. LOL. Good entries. And I know you remember a lot of your travels even trains and ships as a girl child, methinks you were blessed with parents who knew the adventures in travel.. LOL Good one, again.

Blessed, for sure! My father was far more an adventure seeker -- not so much my mother. While they always traveled as part of a tour, he was fond of going his own way into neighborhoods, grocery stores, etc. I wouldn't dare do that in today's climate.
DeleteMy dream trip would be on the Orient Express. I fell in love with the idea after reading the book. I wouldn't mind going anywhere at this point. I'm tired of being here in my house. I've flown but havae never been on a train or a boat. A cruise sounds heavenly So does blue skies and sunshine. We've way too much rain. It's wonderful that you've had some trips to remember. Love seeing the pictures. Hopefully we won't stay in lock down too much longer and be able to go some place.

DeleteWow... you traveled on the QM!! We just hated our cruise, which was 25 or so years ago. We have never been tempted to try again. As for flying... if I can get there by car, I'm going by car! LOL

The last time I traveled by train I was five years old. We went from New Jersey to New Hampshire. It was autumn and what I remember most were the gorgeous trees.
I used to travel quite often via plane, but lately I've become paranoid. I'd prefer an ocean voyage - -
as long as there are enough life boats....

DeleteHow fun! The couple we cruised with last summer have gone on the Queen Mary, too...for another of their anniversaries! What you mentioned about the behemoths is why I resisted cruises for so long. The one we went on was much smaller than those...around 5000 total passengers and crew combined. It felt intimate and my friend and I could be out at night without the men and not feel afraid (they tell you not to do that or let kids out alone on those giant things). We weren't overrun by kids, either, so it was relaxing.

ReplyDeleteI think the only cruise lines that still adhere to tradition -- Crystal Cruises and Oceanic - are WAY out of my budget. Then again, it might be a great "Last Hurrah!"

ReplyDeleteLove trains and cruises, too. Canceled two for this year. A transatlantic one on a big ship and a much smaller ship in July that stopped at small English ports. That was my 70th birthday present to myself and yes, I'm disappointed. Not sure at my age and with health issues if I will be cruising again. So grateful I took the cruise last year in Scotland.

ReplyDeleteI would travel everywhere if times weren't so weird and the service getting weirder. I Love trains and dad loved to travel by them or car. Those are my two favorite transportation modes. I never cruised and never really cared to. Have been boating and had a seagull deposit a gift from above when I was three on a boat in the Gulf of Mexico. Use to water ski too. ah youth! I hear they are closing all the buffets in Vegas. Wondering what cruise ships will do? Times are really weird. I will take a relaxing week at Hannah and Jake's home with acreage and frogs and birds and deer and chipmunks. I have always liked mud so getting dirty on the ATV makes me smile. Dirt and mud is good for the immune system. Wink Wink
