Friday Fotos ...

Together with Terri, I'm continuing Deb's tradition of sharing photos from our week.  At least those I've not shared already.

And what do I want to revisit, but our Mother's Day visit to Jackson Lake Island.
Best of all, it's only 7 miles from home!

16 years after the release of Tim Burton's "Big Fish", these faux trees are remarkably well-preserved.

 Old church building.
Many of the baby goats hang out under there.

Enduring structures from the movie set.
Um, I don't know who needs to hear this,
but wearing a fanny pack under one's hoodie is
guaranteed to add 50 pounds to one's appearance.

 Speaking of baby goats ....

Say cheese!

Son and DIL, 29 years in love!

I didn't get any photos of the boaters and kayakers ...but Tom's itching to get his jon boat out there.  (I'm nervous, yes!)

In other news ...

So, the other day I was startled to see something on Facebook. This was the 20th anniversary of the Cerro Grande fire which ravaged my hometown, burning more than 43,000 acres and destroying 235 homes.  A prescribed controlled burn by the National Park Service, it became anything but.

Ironically, my mother and I'd just flown to New Mexico, fully expecting to 'bunk in' with old friends. Hardly the sentimental journey we'd envisioned.

This used to be my playground.

Our home wasn't anything special, but thankfully it was spared.
I know devastating fires occur all the time, but when it hits home, well, that just feels different.

Like those who are creating funny memes in the midst of this pandemic, I appreciate this resident's sense of humor:

Hard to decipher, but the For Sale sign reads:
"A fixer-upper ... handyman's dream.
Needs TLC.
Spacious floor plan; unobstructed views.
Remodeling done by National Park Service."

I'm not proud of the way I looked in 1960, but this quad (behind my hat) used to be the one shown above.  Close call, indeed!

Oops, I didn't mean to end on a down note.  Forgive me?  As always, I really appreciate you making time to stop by.

Have yourselves a great weekend ... stay safe!

Hugs, Myra

  2. WOW on the results of the Quad.
I have witnessed many 'controlled burns'. It is so sad that one wasn't controlled at all, and the results not of an Arson! Fires are so sad. Glad your home was spared. Fires take all but memories from families when the house goes. I always remember the lost pictures that will NEVER be in a family history.
Very good post and informative read lady, THANKS

    1. As a matter of fact, when my DIL was young, her family lost all their photos in a house fire. How fortunate we are to be able to copy and store (most) everything on line.

  5. I do remember hearing about that fire. We had already left New Mexico by then but had visited Los Alamos a few times. Such devastation for sure! Loved all your other pictures. Have a good weekend!

    1. I wondered if you weren't living in N.M. at that time! I understand everything's changed so much, I've little desire to go back.

  6. Yep, a fanny pack isn't the most flattering purse in the world, but it's the only one I ever use. I'd much rather enjoy the hands-free luxury of not having to keep track of my stuff, especially when at the grocery store, than I care about how fashionable I look. (I wasn't a fashion maven fifty years ago... so why start now? HA)

I love, love, love the sense of humor of the person who posted that "for sale" sign in front of their ruined home. Sounds like my kinda people. Fires are always tragic, but for the cause to be a so-called "controlled" burn makes it even more so. I'm glad your home was spared.

Take care, and have a super weekend.

    1. True, that! So glad to have jumped off the 'fashion train' before I was pushed. :) Gotta love those folks who manage to find humor in any situation.

    1. Thanks, Terri! I used to loathe the way I looked and nearly destroyed that picture. Good thing I've outgrown feeling so self-conscious.

  12. Loved the photos of the goats, Mevely. I wish I had a goat right now. The grass needs cutting again. With rain and often very cold the grass has grown and we have not had time to go out with the lawn-mower. The other day I found our old lawnmower still at the end of the garden from last year; with my wife standing there from last year still attempting to mow the lawn.

    God bless.
