If this is Wednesday ....

… it's time for the Hodgepodge!
Shout-out to our hostess, Joyce, for crafting each week's questions!

The US of A celebrated Memorial Day this past Monday. Does your family have any military ties?  If so, tell us about them.

You'll recall, I already addressed this on Saturday's meme.
At the time I didn't realize, Tom's grandson is (hopefully) about to become a U.S. Marine .....
pending his successfully completing one final challenge.

Beginning yesterday at 2AM, Victor and his team were to have entered the Crucible. Families are lighting candles on their social media pages, asking for prayers.
I'd never heard of The Crucible, but learned it ...

… takes place over 54 hours and includes food and sleep deprivation (2 hrs. max) and over 45 mi. of marching. The Crucible event pits teams of recruits against a barrage of day and night events requiring every recruit to work together to solve problems, overcome obstacles and help one another along the way.

Cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans, potato chips, mac and cheese, macaroni salad .... your favorite BBQ side?  How many of these do you make from scratch v. buying from the deli?

Tom would probably buy himself small containers of cole slaw, potato salad and macaroni salad from the deli. Personally, I'd rather have pimento cheese. This morning I spotted a recipe that looks mighty good:

(Copied exactly as she wrote it ... I think this lady is my spirit animal!)

Pirate Pimento Cheese

8 ounces (one brick) full-fat Philadelphia cream cheese (Yes, Philadelphia and yes, full fat.)

2 cups (a little more is a lot better) hand-shredded Cabot Extra-Sharp Cheddar (Don’t substitute any other brand and on pain of death, do not use pre-shredded cheese. Heaven forfend.)

1/2 cup Duke’s Mayonnaise (If you can’t get Duke’s, you can’t make this recipe. Sorry not sorry.)
(Just kidding. Use your favorite mayonnaise.)

8 ounces mushed-up pimentos (Drain the little suckers out of their jar or jars, dump them onto your cutting board, and work them over with a mezzaluna or appropriately businesslike knife.)

Generous dollop (do not measure and have no fear) Giuliano Hot & Spicy Jalapeno Spread* (Mount Olive makes a similar product so if you can’t secure a jar of Giuliano, go with second best but deduct one-half of a style point.)

Coarse ground black pepper and kosher salt to taste (If you still use that whiny-thin free-flowing excuse for salt and/or garden-variety black pepper dust, you are on your own and you haven’t made my recipe.)

Lemon pepper (A free-spirited sprinkling.) to taste. And totally optional.
Stir, stir, stir!  Cover and refrigerate for 24 hours.  Will stiffen as liquids are absorbed. Add more Duke's to taste.

Joyce enjoyed asking this question back when the Hodgepodge was a regular thing.  Lake Superior State University posts a list each year of words they think should be banished from the Queen's English for misuse, overuse, and/or general uselessness.  The 2020 list includes:

quid pro quo, artisanal, curated, influencer, literally, I mean, living my best life, mouthful (word used by foodies to describe texture of food in their mouth), chirp (basically an insult), jelly (should for jealous), totes (short for totally), vibe and OK Boomer (internet response from millennial to older generation.)

Of the words/phrases listed, which would you most like to be 'banned'?

Have to admit, I'm not familiar with some most of these. I'm tempted to say 'living my best life' because it sounds really stupid ... but I grudgingly admire the intent.
Because 'OK Boomer' strikes me as sarcastic and/or demeaning, that's my pick.

* * *

I'm sure next year's list will be filled with words springing out of this weird season we're all in currently. What word or phrase associated with the Corona would you be happy to hear less often?

* * *

The month of May wraps up in just a few days. Bid her adieu in 10 words or less.
Thanks for showing me I'm not in control -- (&) never was.
(The ampersand won't count as a word, will it?)

Love y'all ... keep safe!

    1. Thanks! As I understand it, no-one will know until they complete(?) the Crucible sometime tomorrow. Deli Llama of cooks? LOVE that!

  2. Those memes cracked me up, Myra! And yes, I love me some good ol' pimento cheese. Danny makes a dynamite one - homemade is best!

AND rolling here, "NEW NORMAL!" ((ducking))--I am personally so sick of hearing this. I just want to spit angry words.

I forgot today was Wednesday, so the HP will be done tomorrow. Have a beautiful day friend. s miles

    1. Once a Marine, always a Marine … right? I've never had a pimento sandwich, but saw something recently about serving it on a breakfast biscuit with a slice of Conecuh sausage. Yum!

  5. May was long. I agree. If you can find a brand of pimento cheese called Palmetto Cheese in your supermarket I highly recommend. They have a couple of flavors (jalapeño and also bacon) but I like original. I used to make my own, but this is absolutely the best and we always have a container in the frig. It's a SC based product but was always in my NJ supermarket so I think it's all over. In NJ it was in the cheese case by the deli, but here it's in the dairy case by the butter, cream cheese etc. It's the best!!

    1. Thanks, Joyce! You're actually the second person to recommend that … I'll be on the look-out, for sure.

  6. I like your random and the new normal meme! Haha! I don't know--I felt May flew by for me. I see almost half our year over now and it's been somewhat strange. I have never understood pimento cheese.

  8. I agree with that last quote This time of quarenteen seems like a year in itself. The time has flown, yet we've done nothing and have gone no where and in many ways it stood still. Congrats to the grandson who is going into the Marines. Our military super heroes are very appreciated and honored. One of my son's served over 20 years as did his wife, now they are retired and I'm thankful they made it through without any harm coming their way. I usually make all the fixings and love eating my own food more than most anything else, but sometimes I get lazy and buy them at the store. Hoping you both have a great week there and some reasonable weather, no tornadoes or storms.

    1. Thank you so much! I sure agree about appreciating and honoring both our vets and activity military. Quite a welcome change from the awful way in which our Viet Nam servicemen were treated.

  9. Congratulations on your new marine. Your family has a lot to be proud of.

There are many words which are misused these days ... I mean ... quid pro quo for instance. What does it mean ... anyway ... whatev ... if people want to use it then as a quid pro quo I will not ... see what I mean? I am literally and influencer, you know. That's a mouthful. I mean ... it's a totes vibe. Artisanal I think.

    God bless, Mevely.

  11. Congratulations to your Marine. I love our military. But we seem to have more and more police losing their senses. Another tragic death and all video taped by a passer byer. Very sad times. I would take all the picnic/barbeque foods. Rebekah bought a pimento cheese at the store. ONe more thing to add to my eating list. HeeHee! THanks for sharing your recipe; in Western NY you use Weber's Mustard or you do not use Mustard at all. My SIL Zach paid $8 for a jar at the airport. The lady at the convenience store said said she was grateful to still be working. Never closed during all of this chaos. We thanked her for caring for all the people who do travel. The Crucible is a difficult process. Thanks for sharing here. One the words, I just heard them on my TV. Aack!!! Oh Tom plays the sax. Aw....my nephew Troy too. Mindy Abair was fantastic in her shows. We have an autographed CD here too. Always fun to stop by. HUGS

    1. You know, I've always supported our peace officers, but what happened makes me sick to my stomach. People are loosing their minds. LOVE mustard, almost as much as mayo. I'm going to have to look and see of Weber's is available down here.

  12. Love your random thought Myra and your wrap up of May. Mine would have been "out in the workplace and community and healthy. Thank God!" Never heard of the crucible. Now curious to check it out! Warming up here!

  13. Love that last quote! I have never made pimento cheese but love that recipe and have copied it. Duke's Mayo is of course the only one to use, same as Cabot cheese. Stay well!!

    1. I've only made pimento cheese once (traditional recipe), but Tom doesn't care for the pimentos. Might try my DIL's version, using bacon instead.

  14. When you mentioned "The Crucible" I immediately thought of the play by Arthur Miller (which I like very much) I had no idea it was a term connected with the Marines. It sounds extremely grueling. Kudos to Tom's grandson.

I often make homemade potato salad and macaroni salad. I also like tangy cole slaw but never attempted to make it.
The Pirate Pimento Cheese sounds tempting...

...and, just for the record, I LOVE lemon pepper and use it on lots of things - especially barbecued meat.

My list of words to be banned would probably be in the 100s - including Democrat, green, pandemic, social distancing (two words??), ventilators, masks.....

....I'm on a roll - please shoot me!

    1. Never! Keep preaching! My son turned me onto Lemon Pepper a few years ago. YUM! Tom loves cole slaw but is very, very picky -- it has to be sweet and almost soupy. Nope, we've never tried making it.

  15. Prayers and thanks for Victor and team! I haven't thought of pimento cheese, but I developed a taste for it when I lived in Nashville in the '70s. Mrs. Grissoms was my brand of cheese.
