But! I'm still enjoying our Christmas tree. As in years past, we wait until Epiphany to take it down. Except for when we leave home, it's been staying on 24/7. I'm sure going to miss it!
Does anyone else spend time re-reading their prior year holiday posts? I'm been re-reading mine … more often than not, shaking my head.
What's new? Lots!
So relieved to have heard from the folks at UAB's valve clinic, Finally! We're to report early on January 15 for a full day of tests and consult before they -- hopefully -- green-light Tom for a TAVR. We'll drive up the day before and plan on spending a couple nights … because surrounding hotel rooms are reasonable (not!), and neither of us can see to drive that well after dark.
Normally, my "what-iffer" would be spinning, but the only stressor has been finding a kennel where both of us feel comfortable leaving the girls. I think we hit pay dirt this morning. This wasn't the fanciest but our instincts warmed to them right away. (Unlike the highest-rated facility where they refuse to let them board in the same suite. What's that all about?)
Remember Zeus the runaway horse Great Dane?
A few days ago Tom was playing in his workroom/shed when the dogs started going berserk. Then, a big head sticking through the fence.
"Red-neck" rigging!
Zeus' owners live on the other side of our next-door neighbor. It seems Z. took it on himself to first locate loose boards on one side of the neighbor's fence … then on ours. Admittedly, the boards along the south side weren't in the best shape. Our neighbor was supposed to work with Tom to rebuild, but hasn't been cooperative. I said, let's just sacrifice a few inches of our property line and hire a professional to come erect a new interior fence line. (Thankfully, Tom's on board with that.)
The next day I noticed an unusual hole … then another. And another. It seems armadillos have discovered the grubs in our yard are good eating.

An example … Toto, I don't think we're in Arizona anymore.
They've done a number on more than half the back yard; but (knock wood) seem to have moved on. Just in case, when our pest-control guy comes out Monday afternoon I want to see what he has to offer.
Oh well, it's always something. Like momma used to say, things could always be worse.

ReplyDeleteAnyway, great news about Tom. I'll be praying everything goes as you're hoping it will. And what a load off your minds to have found a place for the girls that you're comfortable with. I've never left my dogs at a kennel and cringe at the thought because Daisy (and toy Poodles in general) have horrible separation anxiety.
How cool that you have armadillos! Well, not cool what they're doing to your yard, but still... I never got to see a live one when we lived in Florida. Just the dead ones by the side of the road.

ReplyDeleteIt would be incredibly hard to board Disco - it would take a huge thing for Kelly to allow that. Glad they will be together. Glad you are going early too to get a lay of the land.
Armadillos - not to sure what to say about that - other than that might scare me.

DeleteI am sure Tom will have a successful TAVR! It has been so great for Joe. The only bad thing was Joe's UTI and who knows why that happened. His heart is working great (Praise God!). Do keep us posted! Like Stacy, I love the name of your town too. It really is fun to say! That Great Dane is gorgeous! I love big dogs and they don't get much bigger than Danes! Glad the owner was found. Hopefully your new fence will keep out all kinds of critters!

DeleteWell, you still have your Christmas tree - and I very reluctantly took down my colored lights last night. I had some in my bedroom and they're so relaxing to look at when I'm in bed. I'm almost tempted to put them back up.....

I'm surprised that there are armadillos where you live.

I like Zeus, but couldn't even imagine how much he eats!! I have enough trouble feeding my cats.
I don't see any reason why you shouldn't put those lights right back up. (Inner peace, remember?) Some people invest in pricey aquariums (give me the creeps) or fireplaces … I saw, whatever works!

ReplyDeleteHappy dance over the VA coming through, prayers for Tom and your what iffer . Tell him my friend at TOPS just went through the same surgery. they drove 2 hours to VA in Gainesville and stayed 2 nights also. She said it was a Snap! they did it with a robot and a small incision. prayers Tom Will Snap also.. she did say they stayed in a place that gave cheaper rates for VA hospital stayees… maybe check that? What is wrong with people trying to split the girls up? We rarely left ours but twice we left Baby and Cooper and they stayed together and they allowed them to run free together in a fenced yard twice a day to play. I had my first laugh out loud at Zeus and the 2nd at the red neck repair... I will not post our fence for the world to see, but might PM you a pic... the raccoons have destroyed most of it, the fence is 30 years old. LOVE you...
Coo-SADA! Reminds me of the yodeler in an old cough drop commercial -- Ricola, I think. Yes, we're supposed to be extended a lodging discount for UAB patients; every little bit counts!

DeleteSo glad to hear there is a date on the calendar for Tom's testing/procedure. Good idea to just stay in the area at a hotel for a few days and rest up and not strain with driving. Pitiful that one boarding place wouldn't put the girls together. Seems like that's the natural order of business to keep siblings together in situations like this. Oh my with Zeus and the fencing, but great idea how you are going to work on property lines, etc. I have a dog story I may share on my blog down the line; put it on my Facebook motivational page. Armadillos wow! I just thought they were in Texas!

The sucker broke thru our fence in several places. I was watching once and heard a bunp, Bump against the fence then next the board broke and that big head came thru. Now thinking of that, I can see where your fur babies would hit the roof barking. OUCH!

DeleteMyra-We had a terrible fence between our neighbor's house and ours years ago and she refused to pay anything towards replacement. We put one up inside the old fence. A year or so later she had the old fence taken down so she could 'enjoy' the nice looking fence we built. lol One in every neighborhood. xo Diana

Deletesaying a prayer for tom. hoping all goes well. we too have a wooden fence so i understand the problem you face. help always helps. i hope you never have to come up close to an armadillo. they look cute and innocent enough, but i bet they can be fighting mean when confronted. i keep my christmas trees up year round. my godparents did it when i grew up and now i've adopted the idea, so whenever i need a little christmas throughout the year, i just flip on the lights and it's here. otherwise they stay off until halloween. take care.

ReplyDeleteI know it's a little weird, but I LOVE armadillos. I think they are sooooo cool looking. Then again, we don't have them around here tearing up our yard, either. I've heard that people who have to put up with them consider them to be nothing more than rats on the half shell.

DeleteGood news for Tom. I think all will work out nicely. Keep us posted. Armadillos, we don't see them here. Funny different creatures everywhere we go. We had a great kennel years ago for our lab. But we have never had to board this bunch of wild ones! I see lots of doggy daycare centers downtown. I think today the younger generation like their pets in place of kids. But it's good to have someone who cares about your pets. I have a friend who walks dogs for people. She runs a great little business and the thing is, she adores all the pups. Keep us posted about Tom and you two are always in my prayers. HUGS
