Thanks for asking, Terri!
National Science Fiction Day is celebrated annually on January 2nd by millions of science fiction fans across the United States. The date of January 2 was chosen as it corresponds with the birth date of famed sci-fi writer, Isaac Asimov. National Science Fiction Day is recognized by the Hallmark Channel and the Scholastic Corporation.
How to observe?
Watch some classic science fiction TV shows or movies. Start reading a sci-fi novel. Use #Science FictionDay to post on social media.
Will you observe National Science Fiction Day as recommended above? Do you even like science fiction?
Not even a little. Do you?
I wasn't surprised (that) my test results came back, 'Grateful.'
Pleased, at first. Then, I remembered that, in the early days of 2013, I'd chosen 'Gratitude.' Those of you long-time readers might remember how well that turned out. Not.
Like the Universe said, "Oh really? Let's just see about that." Before 90 days had elapsed, Caraleigh passed unexpectedly and little-by-little my world began to crumble. It was many months before I could sincerely feel gratitude for anything or anyone.
Because I'd really like to participate, I'm going with SURRENDER.
Did you stay up to see the new year in? Are you happy to sad to see 2018 go?
Thanks to a heavy dinner, I fell asleep on the couch … but woke up in time to recite the count-down -- and swallow half a carton of my once-a-year Borden's egg-nog. Yum!
Happy or sad? Color me cautiously optimistic.
Terri really enjoys the Tournament of Roses parade on New Year's Day but rarely gets to sit and enjoy the entire parade because she is cooking. Did you watch the parade?
It would kill my folks to hear me say it, but I'm not a big fan of parades. Both were enthusiasts; and once, my dad drove the 879 miles to Pasadena in one day. (Oh my! I remember being lined up on the curb with my cousins … cold and cranky.)
Did you cook/eat the traditional foods (pork, black-eyed peas, kraut, greens …) to begin the new year?
First thing, I put on a mess of Conecuh sausage, collard greens and black-eyed peas. (Tom's become really adept at picking the peas out, lol.) We enjoyed them with grilled chicken breasts and DIL's cornbread dressing.
Terri says she has to ask: Resolutions. Did you make any or set some new goals for 2019? Or do you even think about it?
Once upon a time ...

Perhaps I'll borrow from g'friend Beth:
My yearly resolutions are simple:
Go somewhere I have never been before.
Do something I have never done before.
Learn something new.
Get to know someone new.
Already, the VA has scheduled Tom for a bone scan tomorrow (Thursday) at 9AM. Thank you so much for your continued prayers!
Idle question:
Is it just me … or does anyone else feel an extraordinary sense of well-being -- richness, even -- when putting out a brand-new, big ole roll of toilet paper? (Little things mean a lot, lol.)
* * *
Smiling your direction across the miles. Be safe!
Hugs,
Myra

Why does toilet paper not cut along the perforations?
ReplyDeleteWhy is toilet paper never square, it is rectangular?
Why does it say on the pack of toilet paper how many squares it has? The squares are never the same size depending on brand.
Some packs say how many "square meters" it contains. Some people must have very big bottoms I think to require a meter of paper.
Do you put the roll of toilet paper with the paper rolling towards you, (i.e. from the top), or away from you, (i.e. it rolls from behind the roll of paper)?
Do you fold the end of the toilet paper into a triangle like they do in hotels?
Do you ever get on ply of toilet paper not matching the perforations in the ply underneath it?
Do you have two ply or three ply toilet paper?
Why have I got toilet paper on the brain?
I think life is like a roll of toilet paper. The nearer you get to the end the quicker it rolls round.
OK ... I am now flushed out of toilet paper comments.
New comment:
Praying for your good health and that of your loved ones. May the New Year bring you all happiness, joy, hope, good health and an abundance of toilet paper.
God bless.
Let the good times roll! For the record, my TP falls down front-ways from the top. Yah, I tried making that fancy triangle (like the hotels) but it looked ridiculous.
DeleteLet me say first thing. I love you Myra my sister from another mother and father... we are so much alike it is scary. I just wish we lived close enough to do a few things together. I can't tell you how many times I have thought and said to Bob how grateful I am to have toilet paper. we discuss things like what did they do on a wagon train for a year moving west without TP. we also discuss what do homeless people do? even if they can buy it where do you keep it. I am finding after reading victors comment I might love him to. LOL LOL and yes I do know LOL is OUT and not in. happy the VA came through and he can get the scan tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI despise parades, I have only seen the NY in 3 times in my 74 years, I have never chosen a word, but a word chose me my whole life, outspoken. my mind thinks it and it pops out... scary
I've never thought about the early pioneers -- nor the homeless population. (Ish!)
DeleteI didn't see that about 'LOL' becoming passe. Wish me luck learning to drop it!
New years eve. I was happily typing along when I felt my loves arms around me and she whispered in my ear, "Happy New Year". THEN I REMEMBERED OF COURRSE!!! HAHAHAHA
ReplyDeleteYep, we had the traditional but this time I suggested pork chops! I never remember any traditional meals during my early life. I never heard of the tradition until I married Sherry, She brought that in..
Love from the Peace, TODAY we head all the way up to Kissimmee. To continue the shake down cruise..haaha
Ah, what would you be without your social secretary -- who also happens to be the love of your life? Happy cruising!
DeleteThat is the best list of new year resolutions I have ever seen, I think I could accomplish them all!!
ReplyDeleteI know, right? No muss, no fuss!
DeleteFantastic resolutions Myra!!!
ReplyDeletePraying for Tom! Loved your answers! Have a nice day!

Thank you so much, Lori!
DeleteI really like this: "Go somewhere I have never been before.
ReplyDeleteDo something I have never done before.
Learn something new.
Get to know someone new." I hope to accomplish all these in 2019. These are great resolutions!!
What do you say, let's post about it this year!
DeleteI love that resolution! I may have to steal that too!!!! I am with you on the cranky and cold for parades! I am not a fan but I do love to see my nieces and nephews faces as they enjoy them a lot!
ReplyDeleteNow THAT's a great perspective!
DeleteMy entire life has been like something out of science fiction. There's no way in hell you'll catch me observing a day about it.
ReplyDeleteA word for 2019....
how about DISCOMBOBULATION?
Of course I stayed up to see the new year in. I'm a hardcore night owl. Midnight is extremely early for me.
The Tournament of Roses Parade is the only parade I ever watch, because it always ignites memories of California.
One year long ago - during my misguided youth - I was one of the (many) volunteers who helped decorate the floats.
My volunteer days are now officially over.
Sorry - I don't do resolutions....or black-eyed peas.
Discombobulation's a great word! My son has a mantra, 'Embrace the chaos.'
DeleteI vaguely recall watching a documentary on the prep that goes into those floats … amazing.
New TP is always a gift. To ensure its existence, we go to Sam's Club and load up. For NYr's eve day, I made a huge pot of chicken noodle soup. Found frozen egg noodles in store and they were magical.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, our home's storage space is insufficient to warrant a Sam's membership. Now, on this cold rainy night, I'm craving a bowl of chicken noodle soup!
DeleteI like your goals for the year. All very doable! Glad to hear Tom will have his testing tomorrow! That is quick service I think! I remember one year going to the Rose Parade. It was beautiful to see in person, but we splurged and got grandstand tickets so didn't have to wait overnight for a good place, etc. Thankfully it was a perfect sunny day too!
ReplyDeletebetty
What a beautiful memory! (Speaking of which, I'm looking forward to reading about your family's excursion to the zoo!)
DeletePraying about Tom and you too! Love reading your blog. I am trying to get better. These puppies and Leo drive me mad some days in and out like a revolving door. It's so cold those puppies often make a u turn back into the house. You leave the most thoughtful comments. I use to love parades but not so much since all the political controversy over Columbus and the lack of respect for our military. So many protesters U G H ! I don't particularly care for the polici correct version of CHRISTmas either so we never ever go to that parade filled with everything PC and nothing Christmasy! ALthough I see the black community made the latest mayor in Denver put the nativity back up at the City and County Bldg. He has been quiet as a churchmouse since his son was picked up for a DUI in another county and harassed the cops saying his dad would have their job! The officer replied, your dad is not the mayor of this city! LOL LOL LOL Oh the joys of people thinking they rule the world! I hope your new year is blessed with good health and great blessings.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Anne! I'd not heard that business about Denver, the mayor and the nativity, (Oh my, that last sounds like the title of a country song!) It seems if someone's not feeling entitled, they're offended. Good grief!
DeleteMy college's motto is "Go where no one else has gone, do what no one else has done," which is pretty close to your goals for 2019. I'm posting my word later tonight. Thanks for your friendship through the years and prayers for you and Tom!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great motto! Your watchword was a happy surprise!
DeleteToilet paper... now that made me laugh! Thanks so much for joining in on the Medley, Myra!! I enjoyed your answers and agree with you on science fiction! Happy new year to you and Tom!
ReplyDeleteAw, thanks! Sometimes I even crack myself up. But it's true … if I think it, I'm usually gonna say it.
Deletetoilet paper made me laugh too. i almost peed myself. prayers still headed your way.
ReplyDeleteA little potty humor's always good for the soul!
DeleteSurrender is a good word! Prayers for Tom. My toilet paper thrills come from finding someone other than me managed to change the roll!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Stacy! Since Tom has his own bath, if I discover an empty roll it's my own fault.
DeleteSurrender is a terrific word for the year, Myra! And joining with almost everyone here, the toilet paper scenario made me chuckle. Still praying for Tom!
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Thank you, Martha! I didn't mean it to be funny, but yes. I guess it is.
DeleteIf hanging a new roll of toilet paper gives you a thrill, you should get yourself some of the ne super mega rolls Charmin offers now. Each roll is the size of six regular ones. Yeah... BIG! Hanging one of them'll make you feel like the queen of the world. :)
ReplyDeleteYour resolution is outstanding! Not sure how much trendsetting I'm going to do, but I like the idea of being open to new things.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, dear lady! I hope your hubby fares well with his medical tests.
Alas, I tried those super mega rolls but they wouldn't fit. That's OK; I'm content feeling like a peasant … no responsibilities!
DeleteNo black eyed peas here, but we did have ham and beans. Richard would be aghast. I did make it until midnight as I was waiting on Darian to get home with my car. His driving record isn't the best. LOL! Happy New Year Friend!!
