Doing a-what comes naturally!

Holy Moly ... who let the heat in?  Y'all don't want to know what I think about Mother Nature's menopausal outbreaks.

Since she pays no attention to what I think, however, I'm trying to focus on those things that bring me pleasure -- family, food and books.

The other day we had occasion to enjoy two of those over lunch.  The food wasn't as great as I'd been bragging to my son about -- but the company more than made up for it.

(from left - Tom, Troy, Lois, Penelope, Chloe and her BF RJ.  (Daddy Robert had drill.)

Did she really say that out loud?
Well, shut my mouth!

Other than calling Fat Boys to reserve the brisket and narrowing sides down to 3, I'm not concerning myself about Thanksgiving -- and any dynamics 'til then.
More about that, as soon as I'm able, but I'm praying for full hearts as well as full tummies.

With little on television to interest me, I've been wandering back and forth to one of my favorite places -- the Public Library.

While pickings are slim, I've decided there's something immensely comforting about the feel of a real book in my hands.  The aroma, even.

Unfortunately, I've not had the best of luck finding something that grabs -- and holds my interest.  For instance, an amazing author I've followed for years recently published something that feels downright creepy.  As one reviewer wrote, "50 Shades of Grey with ghosts"  Um, no.  DNF.

I heard the 2025 National Book Awards will be announced this week..  Not to be confused with Amazon's 2025 Best Books of the Year.   Who (or what) decides these things, anyway?

It won't stop me from reading what they have to say; in fact, I'm more than a little intrigued by one finalist, Buckeye.  Someone called it a "once in a decade" read  ... but I balk at the idea of paying retail right now.   What if I don't like it?   Does that sort of thing make a difference to you?

Well, the quiche I planned to put in the oven isn't going to make itself.  Despite what the package says (good until Nov. 23), I discovered more than a few spinach leaves turning black and ick.  They may be safe to consume, but I'm going after a new bag; no sense courting a case of food poisoning.

Here's to the holiday countdown!

Hugs, Myra

  1. Since I have found the Libby app for reading my book budget is now zero and I am reading just about anything I want to read (though there are delays sometimes)

  2. Penelope steals the show, Myra!!! So many books, so little time, and I don't feel like spending the money right now. I am going to put together a wish list that Danny can order for my birthday in March. Hope that quiche turned out okay. Blessings!

  3. So it's a little warm where you are. Over here it is freezing, (no snow yet), and it gets dark by 4:30pm.

I like books. Our house is full of them and I have no time to read them all. Mind you, some of them are from my school days like Chaucer, Shakespeare and so on.

    God bless, Mevely.

    1. I think the presence of books lends such an air of warmth to a room.

  6. How nice that you had lunch out. So are you cooking on Thanksgiving? Good for you going to the library but sorry you didn't have good luck. Hope your quiche worked out.

  7. way back before KINDLE when I went to the library for all my reading, or bought used paper backs and then the library got all the paper backs and I stopped buying, and got them free, I had a list as long as my arm of favorite authors. Now when I see a book by one of them, I give up my kindle reading and get the new one from the library. I gave that up a couple of years ago because the authors I loved, are just churning out junk, quick junk. Even my beloved Jack Reacher books changed some . which brings up your point about the books and how we all see the story and people with our own minds. I do that and I love that part of it. I prefer books over movies every time. I can't find a good movie to watch and have suddenly found that when I watch one from the past that I loved I don't love it anymore.
the baby is adorable, and is say OH MY! I thought about ordering a TG dinner for bob and I but when I saw the price quickly changed my mind.
I will run to WM and get a spiral cut ham, and have that and potatoes salad, deviled eggs and baked beans and nary a veggie on the table.. nothing involved but boiling eggs, boiling potatoes, heat a can of Bush Country style baked beans, and pull an already sliced slice off the ham...done and done

    1. I don't do ham but would love all the rest you've mentioned. Work smarter, not harder!

  9. The temperatures went back up here too. Sadly.
I think going to the library is a GREAT way to get new read without having to buy the book and spend oodles of money.
Penelope is sitting upright already. Great. She is adorable. I made a cake for a friend today for her birthday. I was making an orange flavored icing, and it said to use some of the grated rind. Well, it tasted HORRIBLE and I had to make it over without the rind - no food poisoning here either.

  10. Thanks to you, I will forever think of heat waves as "Mother Nature's menopausal outbreaks".

  11. We get to spend Thanksgiving at our son's home. I only have to do the mashed potatoes and gravy..win/win for me. I am going to miss all those yummy smells in our house though.
I used to be such an avid reader but don't know what happened ... getting old I guess ... I have a ton of books (a lot unread) and there they sit.. sigh ..
Love seeing your photos of family and that precious little one.
    Have a great day.

    1. I actually go through phases like that, too. Pick something up and 5 minutes later put it down.

  12. I buy spinach and always end up tossing 1/3 of it on trash day. Books... don't get me started. Still haven't recovered my reading mojo. Sigh. xo

  13. It was nice and cool here -- the low about freezing and the high about 40. That lunch sounds like a great success. 😊❤️

  14. I know what you mean about having slim pickings as far as reading material goes. There's tons of books out there but so many are not readable. At least in my mind's eye. Think it has to do with indy publishing now and lord know who said disparaging things about the book I indy published.

  15. I love making quiche. a Southwest variety my SIL Lucy gave the recipe to me. She worked at Lindy's Tea Room at the Thatcher House in our hometown and it is delicious. I add extra green chilies to it. I am with David Bruton. He played with our Broncos and he had a foundation to get kids to read. REAL BOOKS! I like the feel of a book in my hand and like Sharon ,my beloved sweet late friend, I like to think what the various characters would sound like. So many unanswered questions. I am so happy to be here. Much love to you and Tom.
