In a little while I'm headed to Publix. Target, too.
Which means: I'm wearing my 'good' leggings, a shirt with no visible stains, new tennis shoes.
v. these super comfy ones with toe holes in the sides.
Recalling something my favorite columnist wrote about his late MIL. He might have been speaking about my own mother: "Each day without fail, she'd shower, bath-powder herself, light a Camel Pall Mall and slide on a house dress. That's how it was done."
There were day dresses, church dresses, a shopping-in-the-Big City dress -- and a pair of pedal pushers. My wardrobe wasn't dissimilar, but gosh forbid I forget to change into 'play clothes' after Sunday school!
I certainly didn't come from means -- but attire was a Big Deal. I'm amused at today's choices. Reminded, I'm old. A friend's pretty granddaughter was spotted in church the other day, sporting a pair of ripped jeans that likely cost as much as my utility bill. Aw, there's so much more I could be concerned about. Her heart's in the right place.
🎄
What else?
As my Facebook friends are aware, I've a love/hate relationship with the U.S. Postal Service. Today I'm smiling, recalling an exchange I recently overheard. (Customer) I'd like two books of stamps, please. (Clerk) Regular, or the pretty ones? (Customer) Regular's fine. (Clerk) Sure thing! Oh, my mistake. There's nothing prettier than the U.S. Flag, right? How about that?!
Thank you for making time to stop by! I hope y'all enjoy a super, stress-less day!
Hugs, Myra

I remember the days of dresses and yes, I always had to change into my play clothes too. I'll never forget when they first let us wear pantsuits to work. We have the same at our church with the raggedy jeans and such. I remember when we had to wear hats and cloves and the dreaded panty hose. All the time even in the heat of summer. The flag is no doubt the prettiest stamp they could create but I did get some with Santas on them. I love the Christmas stamps to put on Christmas cards ! I love your eminences of days gone by. There are somethings I forget and shouldn't.
ReplyDeleteI think I bought those same 'Santa' stamps! For the first time in a year, I wore pantyhose to church the other day. They actually felt pretty good; I used to wear them under jeans in winter to help keep warm.
DeleteSorry that should have read gloves not cloves.
ReplyDelete😄
DeleteIt's all good!
Love that quote "we never real grow up. We only learn how to act in public." Ain't that the truth!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I received the print and I love it! As soon as I get out to get a frame for it, I'll get it hung up and post about it. It's so beautiful and again I thank you!!
Thank you for letting me know, Cathy. I'm so happy you like it!
DeleteIt is good sometimes, (often) to think back to our childhood and to remember the values we grew up with and what we were taught back then.
ReplyDeleteTimes have changed; and now is the time to live up to old values in order to improve the world ... a little.
Wishing you and your family well now and for ever.
God bless, Mevely.
A little at a time ... I like that!
DeleteGod bless you, Victor.
That is true about the housecoats. Seems like a comfortable thing to wear. Things are definitely different today and honestly I think there are still times when people should look presentable. Especially in church!
ReplyDeleteExcept in high society, I think dress codes have gone by the way. Last time we cruised, I couldn't believe what some people thought passed for formalwear. That sounds snobby, but no. I'm talking t-shirts.
DeleteI get my spiritual CPR form a Big half Dane Dog.. when he leans on me asking for a hug of his head, my BP goes down, my heart sings, I feel joy. he does the same thing for Bob. that said, I do not like people hugs, never have. I used to hug my parents when we drove up and i had not seen them for months, but that is it. Even after i told the TOPS group I did not want to hug they did it anyway and said its good for you . that got my Irish up and i started hold my hand up like a cop and saying DO NOT HUG me... it became a joke and made everyone laugh. one lady kept insisting, I finally had to tell her the perfume made me sick and it went home with me and would no come off in the shower. she said but i dont' wear perfume. I said then what is the smell on your face, she said oh thats moisturizer. SCEENTED of course.
ReplyDeleteWe were the same as you with the clothing, each thing we did had what we wore. Heaven forbid Easter and no new hat. Easter was new dress, shoes and hat. mothers day was best dress and a red or white flower depending of if mother was dead or alive. in the late 70's i wore a matching pant suit to church and it caused a scandal. the 2000's came along and the new pastors wife brought the house down by wearing jeans IN THE CHURCH.. fond memories and funny now
I love that, Sandra. I think ALL dogs should be regarded as 'assist' animals. Does anyone even wear perfume anymore? Too funny about the pastor's wife.
DeleteI've been having trouble leaving comments on blogs today. Don't know if the trouble is caused by Blogger or my computer.
ReplyDeleteI luv that first photo. It looks so wintry and your house looks cozy.
I miss the old days of my childhood when attire really meant something. Men were men, women were women, and dress codes actually existed. I remember when my Mom bought a fancy Easter bonnet and white gloves. Methinks those days are gone forever.
I used to HATE dressing for church, because my pants were made of wool. They itched like hell and it was torture to wear them.
Exactly! Scratchy pants or not, weren't we fortunate to experience those days?
DeletePS - Thank you for persevering; I always look forward to your comments!
Big smile here
DeleteOh I dearly love the three girls with heard gear, SWEET. And yep hang the Sunday clothes up and get the play clothes.
ReplyDeleteThat is sweet, the opinion of the kid in torn jeans, "Her heart is in the right place!"
I forget 'to remember that'.... with much of the youth today.
Anyway, as always WE enjoy the visit to your house.
We head south in the morning. We have actually had good weather for the time up here.
Love you girl,
Sherry & jack smiling at the little dressed up girl......
Thank you, Jack and Sherry. You two stay safe out there!
DeletePS: I meant to say I loved the statement about our beautiful flag. SWEET!
ReplyDelete😀
DeleteYes, indeed, I remember Sunday best, play clothes, school clothes, etc. My first pair of patent leather high heels could only be worn to church. Those were the days. Our pastor wears jeans. Times have changed. And I agree there is nothing prettier than the US Flag! xo
ReplyDeleteThose were the days, my friend ... we thought they'd never end ...
DeleteI like that clerk at the post office. Some professional athletes should listen to him with hos he had respect for the flag :) (just saying :)
ReplyDeleteI do remember my mom changing out of the "good clothes" after church on Sunday or getting dressed up to go to this or that place. Certainly a thing in the past, at least for me, LOL.
betty
I totally agree with your thoughts about the professional athletes! Spoiled you-know-whats.
DeleteI had church clothes, play clothes, house clothes and school clothes and the only cross purpose was too wear church dresses to a wedding or other dressy event. If I had ever dared to wear my Sunday shoes for any event that did not require a Sunday dress I would have been skinned alive!
ReplyDeleteLOL. You got that right!
DeleteLove the story of the stamps, Myra! I'll take Old Glory any day.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I remember daily dress wearing to school and then to church. Times truly have changed, haven't they? Makes me feel just a tad old.
Blessings!
Yes, times have changed -- and us along with them. What you say, we're aging like fine wine.
DeleteAs always, I enjoy reading your blog! I remember my mom wearing "house dresses," too!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lisa!
DeleteI’m afraid I love being old and not having to dress up. And I love the internet for my blogging friends and for connecting me to the world. I wouldn’t go back.
ReplyDeleteThat's a super sentiment!
DeleteReplace that Pall Mall with a cup of coffee and that could be my MoM too! Back in my day...lol...we also paid more attention to the way we dressed. Not that today is bad, it's just so different. (well, it might be a little bad.)
ReplyDeleteExactly! I only wish it was easier to identify some young people's gender. LOL.
DeleteI still love to dress up. My CHristmas dress, Roger my SIL was teasing me to twirl. I said, like Shea? TaDa! Times have changed. My gradgirl has the holy jeans, I call them. Knees completely gone. HaHaha but the great grand girl in college, leather pants and a Rolling Stones T SHirt. I will post her photo. She is a beauty. Her sister had the "holy" jeans on. Our Christmas was just perfect. I dont knwo if it could be repeated again but it was just perfection with all of us minus Hannah and Jake. I hope your week is beautiful. HUGS and LOVE
