Dear Self - What was I thinking, asking for my Booster AND flu shot at the same time? I'm a side sleeper, so a restful night wasn't in the cards. Live and learn!

Dear Dr. Izer - Color me delighted! Unlike my previous doctor, you said my catarachts aren't significant enough for surgery at this time.
So disappointed, however, when your optical shop couldn't guarantee (the) new lens' could be successfully installed in my old frames. ("Do you know how long it took me to find these?!") Thankfully, two ladies began scurrying and before you know it they found a dozen similar frames.
Which do you think are the new ones?
Anyone else remember this old ad campaign?

Dear Tom - Thank you for insisting I make chili last week. In response to, "But we've no room in the refrigerator" you declared, "Then we'll MAKE room." And thanks to a former classmate who suggested I order Chimayo chile powder. It certainly made a difference!
Tom's a purist ... but I still prefer mine with scrambled eggs and lots of cheddar cheese.

Dear Nursing Home Blessings - Sure and Facebook has become a scary-and-sad place to visit. But there's still lots of good that keeps me coming back. For instance, your giving initiative --
"If you're doing a little Black Friday shopping, please consider purchasing something for a nursing home resident! We still have residents we'd like to bless this Christmas!
We have over 600 nursing home residents who have been 'adopted' and will be filling gift bags for 145+ more residents. We're collecting items like throw blankets, socks, snacks, card games, puzzle books, toiletries and calendars to fill these care packages.
We're so incredibly excited to deliver Christmas gifts to every resident at 7 Montgomery nursing homes."
Okay, I get it. Charitable giving's highly-personal. There's Blue Santa, Toys for Tots, Angel Trees, Shoebox Santa, etc. Who doesn't want to put a smile on a child's face? I've just got a soft spot for these often-forgotten elders. Imagine the fun they had when asked to write their own wish lists?!
I don't know. Maybe this is done in your city, too? I'd just never heard of it, and felt compelled to put it out here.

Dear Macie Ann - Thanks for always making me smile. So grateful all those yukky tests showed nothing more serious than arthritis in your spine.

I don't know which are the new frames, but they both look really good on you. I've had many Toni perms in my lifetime. That's for sure. I also remember a perm called Lilt, I think.

Charitable giving is highly personal and there are so many wonderful causes out there. It is hard to choose but we have 5 different ones that are our yearly charities with a smattering of smaller donations to several others.
Me, too! I keep hoping the Jackie O. look will come back in style, but so far 'nada.'

Remembering when I lived in West Texas: On Friday and Saturday nights after the clubs closed everyone would go to Saddle and Sirloin for a breakfast of chili and eggs atop Texas Toast. You should try it!

Gifts for nursing home residents is a good idea. I worked at two different nursing homes when I was very young (dishwasher and later a cook). They were extremely depressing places to be and many of the things I saw horrified me. I prayed to God that I'd never live to get old........ha ha, the joke's on me....
How come I never knew about you working at the nursing home? Ya, the short while my mother lived in one I always came away feeling depressed. God bless the caregivers!

ReplyDeletemy mother put my first Toni in when i was 2 years old and never stopped until I moved out at 19 with a husband and I paid someone to do it and then would moan and cry for weeks until the friz went away... in 1980 i cut my hair like it is now and every 3 months i put a lilt in the bangs only. 5 years ago I just went straight as a board natural...
In full disclosure, I got both shots -- but one in each arm. This was a couple weeks ago, but for a couple nights I had to sleep on my back or my stomach. Ugh.

DeleteOk, are they really different frames? You are dressed exactly alike, hair and all...but I'll say the new ones are on the left. I don't get the Toni ad...they look identical, hair and all. Makes no sense to me...if one twin's hair looks that good without the Toni, then why get the toni? I can't read the fine print I guess. I am sorry about your arm. Yes, what WERE you thinking? Ouch. So glad Macie isn't seriously ill, just getting old like the rest of us. Love that picture. I could so enjoy doing that too! And your chili/cheese mixture looks SO good. With scrambled eggs you say? Hmmm, I could be tempted to try it, but it really doesn't appeal to me. Oh, back to the hair. I just had all my most recent perm cut off and my hair is straight as a flitter. whatever that is. As soon as it grows back a bit I may have to get another. Don't think it's a Toni, however. Do they still make them? Okay, the nursing home idea is wonderful. We did that once with our little home church group. We wrapped all kinds of little gifts for a nursing home. I am sure they enjoyed it. I know my MIL used to get a lot of nice things around Christmas that were donated...lap blankets especially. People are very kind and giving, and it is definitely a worthy cause. Okay, I loved visiting, now back to work. LOL. Whatever that is. LOL.

Oh, I so love that the community is adopting the seniors for Christmas! So many of them are forgotten, not just at Christmas, but all year long. When I worked at the nursing home there was a corporation that did their best to fill the residents' wishes/needs and then we, the activity staff, would pack bags adding other donations we got and on Christmas morning we'd get to play Santa, going around delivering the gifts. Trust me, it means the world to these folks. Are the new glasses the ones on the left? They seem a bit smaller. Okay, and I just have to say...scrambled eggs? in your chili? ((shudder))

DeleteI sympathize about your arms. Years ago I had both typhus and typhoid shots, one in each arm. We were invited out to dinner that night and Andy had to comb my hair...I couldn't raise either arm. I still laugh when I think of it.

DeleteI was going to say the glasses on the right picture were the new ones but then I read your response to a previous commenters comment. Wrong again here :) I like the idea of giving something to a senior for Christmas. I think we did something similar a few years back but I can't remember for sure. We like to vary what we do to help others during the holiday season and I think we did give a gift to a senior when we lived in Southern California. I feel for Macie. That arthritis is not fun to deal with. I heard it was not good to get the Covid 19 shot and the flu shot at the same time. Sorry it was an unpleasant experience for you and I can only hope the subsequent nights ahead are much more pleasant sleeping times!

DeleteOver here too we have a number of charities dedicated to the elders. The St Vincent de Paul Society for instance. They visit elderly folks in their homes and provide practical assistance where required - e.g. driving people to doctors or hospitals for tests etc ...

I'm glad you let us know about programs that reach out to the elderly in nursing homes at Christmas, Myra. I hadn't heard about that! I also love your glasses frames - both photos look great, and I'm glad you don't have to have a cataract procedure at the moment. I've had one eye done, the one that was the most serious, and wear a contact in the other eye. Think I'll stick to this for a good long while.

I'm glad you had success in finding them. The chili sounds wonderful, although you do like yours spicier than I do. I only make the mild kind. The idea of giving to nursing homes is a wonderful one. DeleteSeveral years ago I had my pneumonia vaccine at the same time as the flu shot. Ugh! I had an uncomfortable 24 hours. I knew that getting my booster and the flu shot wasn't for me. Hope you're feeling better.

DeleteWhen we lived in Mobile, AL Walgreens had a Christmas tree for local nursing homes. I picked Lucy and she wanted a ‘Horton hears a who’ DVD and some candy. I enjoyed doing that but haven’t found anything like that since then. We’ve bought for a family often through hubby’s work and enjoyed that too, but sometimes the elderly has no one else.
