TBT: Mommy-isms

Ah, what fun it is to join Martha at Seaside Simplicity for another look back in time!

* * *

Despite my mother's gentle nature, when it came to the common cold there was no room for argument.  Once a nurse, always a nurse!

At the first sign of a sniffle, out came the Vicks VapoRub.  Liberally coated from chest to tonsils, my neck was then swaddled in an old strip of flannel, safety-pinned for good measure.  Salt-water gargle, a vaporizer and a steamer blanket might accompany the ritual.

On special occasions, I was permitted to come downstairs to watch television -- where the sofa boasted not one, but two freshly ironed sheets: top and bottom!  Warmed honey milk and tapioca pudding for supper?  You betcha!

Why, being sick was almost pleasurable!

I don't know if anyone has that kind of time nowadays?

Still, I love this quote by Flavia:
"Remembering is a journey our heart takes into a time that was ... and our thoughts are the only tickets needed to ride."

Thanks for visiting ... stay safe!

Hugs,
Myra

  1. Oh I definitely remember that Vicks Vapor Rub too, and for me it was always chicken noodle soup when I was sick. I love the photo today, looking at your mom next to your photo on the sidebar I think you look a lot alike. I love your little doll too, looks almost like my Buddy doll that was my favorite and I still have him. I love looking back in time, thanks for sharing your memories and linking up. Have a great weekend :)

    1. Aw, thank YOU for this venue! That's sweet, your still having Buddy; not sure whatever happened to 'Harry.'

  2. Yep ... we still have Vicks Vapour Rub at home, and the plastic sticks you inhaled from. We also used to have something called "Flip". Possibly an invented name. The yolk of an egg beaten in a cup with sugar, filled with hot milk and a drop or two of brandy. It was worth having a cold just to have Flip.

    God bless.

    1. Yes, we kids thought our plastic inhalers were da bomb! I've not heard of a 'Flip' - but it sounds delicious ... might have to give that a try.

  3. I still use Vicks occasionally when my nose gets stuffy during the night and I can't breathe. I just put a little dab under my nostrils and it works every time! I love your picture with you and your mother in your red nightgowns, and your dolly too. I have doll very similar to that one...it came from my Mother in Law's house and she didn't remember where it came from. She named it Pearl after her mother. Love your story. Precious memories.

    1. Thanks, Pamela! I remember a brand of doll called, 'Poor Pitiful Pearl', but suppose your MIL's is different. So neat it was named for her mother, and now you have it!

  4. I haven't smelled Vicks in years but I can still remember how it smells! Mom would put it around our nose area; I don't remember too much the chest area. Your mom took great care of you!! I love the picture of the two of you! Now did you do the same for your son when he was growing up?

    1. Yes, she sure did. And I don't think I ever paused to say 'thank you.' Honestly, I can't remember doing anything like that for Troy.

  5. Ah, yes. Vicks was a cure all, for sure, but nothing could beat my mom 'petting' my forehead and hair when I was sick. I'm sure it was to test for fever, but her touch was just the best medicine. Hugs!

  9. I love that quote about memories, Myra. And yes, I remember the ol' Vicks, too, but I must confess, I never liked the smell of it even if it did do the trick.
    Blessings!

  11. LOVE the photo and love love the gowns. I always had flannel gowns but not christmas related. and my childhood was your childhood. no vaporizer, to poor, but daddy use to put it in boiling water and let us smell it. i have to say, i did this to my kids and still do it to myself. one sniffle and the jar comes out. even when my allergies act up and i get stuffy, I tap a dot of it on the end of my nose to sleep and sore throat treatment is rub it on throat and tie a red cowboy hanky around like iw was going to pull it up and rob a stagecoach

    1. What a super idea your daddy had! Since Tom hates the 'aroma' I've not used any Vicks in years.

  12. Same here, Myra. My mom did nearly the same thing, only hers was chocolate pudding. Gosh, thanks for sharing your memories, grin.

  13. I'll never forget the tea and peached eggs on toast when the flu would hit. Yes, our mom's were the best taking care of us. Good memories for sure! And don't forget the chicken soup the was good for our bodies and our souls.

    1. I don't think I tasted a poached egg until I was an adult. But soup, yes. Anything I suppose that was bland and easy to swallow. Wouldn't it be lovely to be pampered in that manner again?

  14. I didn't get "the whole treatment," but I do remember Vicks Vapo Rub, as a part of childhood.
~smile~ Glad it is still around.

Delightful photo of the 2 of you, in matching Granny Gowns/hats/and even your doll!!!!

  17. My Momma wasn't a nurse but she did everything just like your Mom. Good memories, long ago and far away.

  18. My mom did much the same as yours.
Tapioca while on the sofa? Whoa. Mom never went that far. Most of the time she said, "You got the flu, go to bed."

  19. I recently bought Vick’s salve as we called it. It’s been awhile, I like a little under the nose if stuffy. Glad things went well with your procedure. Take care, Sheila
