the sad state of my hands. Daddy's hands.
Before being hired, I took care to make sure my nails were neat and subtly polished. Well, between nerves and whatever, the nails began to split down to the 'quick', and my cuticles resembled someone who tried hand-feeding a piranha.
The skin on the back of my father's hands would actually split open from the dry, wintry air. Sometimes he'd apply iodine from itty-bitty glass tubes. Stuffed with cotton, one would break the tiny tube in half, and viola'! The cotton would become saturated with Mercurochrome. As a little girl, I like to play with those magical little vials.
Does anyone else remember them, or was that just a government-issue thing?
A Favorite Thing
Inexplicably, Tom's been given to sudden chills coming from deep inside. I've even discovered him asleep in the recliner clutching my childhood heating pad to his chest. (If you want to do the math, imagine the state of that electrical cord!)
When my DIL showed us what she bought for her father I had to get one for Tom. It's oversize (50" x 60") and has 3 heat settings to keep him toasty warm.
Looking Forward to
We finally got the V.A. authorization + the name of a surgeon in Birmingham! 'Sure hope they'll call soon with our marching orders!

ReplyDeleteI really do like that electric blanket. I think they should invent toasters for humans. Imagine, a large toaster like the one you have in the kitchen, but people can enter therein and keep warm whilst watching TV.
I also like your new pillowcase. That too could be re-invented into a device to keep warm. One could wear it on one's head and with a small battery it would warm one's head.
I'm on a roll right now. I'll invent these myself and become famous.
I remember Mercurochrome from years gone by. I read somewhere it was banned because it contained mercury. (Hence the name). Otherwise they would have called it potatochrome !!!

DeleteA friend and I have built the human toaster and tested it whilst watching TV. At first it was nice and warm, then it overheated and when it "popped" up I flew out the toaster and my head hit the ceiling.
I'm waiting to be seen by a nurse for a headache and burns in places I'd rather not mention.

DeleteMyra, I DO remember those little vials with Mercurochrome in them! Always preferable to iodine when we had a cut or scrape! Iodine stings! That electric blanket looks great! Tom will love it!! I am going to check out Faceplant Dreams on ETSY! Thanks for the info!

DeleteI remember Mercurochrome, but not little glass vials. At least I don't think I do. I remember little bottles that had that thin rod/stick attached to the lid that applied the stuff. The last time I was in my mom's medicine cabinet I think there was still a bottle in there!

Cold weather makes me feel brittle and achy.
Yes, my hands crack and bleed in cold weather.
When I was about two years old I was stung by a wasp, and I remember my grandfather putting Mercurochrome on it (on ME, not the wasp...)
Am I really that old?? Hell, no....

DeleteHoping and praying things start moving in the right direction for Tom and his upcoming procedure! My hands are much better now but I did suffer from the dryness and cracking of the skin when we lived in Montana. I remember lathering them with Crisco sometimes just to keep them from cracking and wearing gloves to bed. I did find a good (expensive) hand lotion that worked on them but for the life of me can I remember its name? I'll have to ask son because he suffers from the same and he uses the lotion and it works. I'll have to look into that extra big heating blanket for myself!

DeleteLike you I miss having a fireplace to sit by and warm up, but I do have one of those electric brackets, the kids got me one for Christmas.a couple of years ago now. How great you have your shopping done. I am still working on the gifts I will be giving. Handpainted ornaments for my children and grand children. That pillow case is a find and I'd imagine one of a kind. How nice you found an etsy hope you like. Now that the VA has given some news, I'll be praying all goes well for Tom and things don't drag on any longer. Take care the both of you, and keep warm.

ReplyDeletethat heated throw is fantastic. bob keeps a throw on the sofa, he uses it for all seasons. AC makes his legs freeze... if we lived anywhere but FL would get that throw for him. my friends bought the fireplace and she loves it. be sure you get one that is not looks only but heats. I am typing carefully because I have the same hands you do and just finished rubbing vit e oil in my finger tips and cuticles. I have cocoanut oil and will try that also. I got out of bed a few days ago and told bob I felt like an old oak tree, my legs and arms were like stumps until I got them moving.. I think it is called aging but I might be wrong..
Oh, let's not use the 'A' word, OK? (*smile*). Any of the oils should do the trick --if I'd just remember to use them.
DeleteWe used mercurochrome as children, but ours came in a bottle, but there was a little glass or plastic tube attached to the lid that you put it on with. We called it Jumping Up and Down Medicine, because it always stung.

DeleteSorry to be so late, but we were getting this coach to the RV shop and my reading and commenting was very sporadic. Tom sounds like my Sherry (but her heating pad is only a couple years old, well maybe 20. Sorry to hear about the chills, but glad the VA has come thru. They have been good to me, once I did get their attention.
ReplyDeleteOh yes and that little tube to mix the mercurochrome and cotton was a gov't issue item although they were also available in First Aid packets. There were a couple in my belt med packet in the Corps. LOL
Is iodine and Mercurochrome still available. They were my go to repair as a kid.
I would bet Victor is right about the mercury in the product.

DeleteHow is Tom doing? I had a heart catheterization yesterday in Dothan and an appointment in Birmingham the 19th. With Dr. Mustafa Ahmed lucky I didn't have any blockage just my valve problem. I'm having the feeling of freezing inside out also. Keeping you both in my prayers.

DeleteI know I'm older than you are, but I don't remember mercurochrome coming in individual vials like you described. Just the little bottle with the glass wand applicator. (Maybe that's all we poor folks could afford. HA!)

(Smarticus takes naps part one and part deux most days... :) )I used to use an electric blanket. I'd "preheat" the bed before I got into it, so I didn't have to crawl in between those cold sheets. Then I discovered flannel sheets... and haven't used the electric blanket since.
Your "closing thought" made me laugh out loud. Yep! That's me... a chronic browser, but lousy buyer. (When the shopping gene was handed out, I think I was waiting in a different line... probably one for inappropriate humor...)
I'd totally forgotten about those flannel sheets; my mother should've bought stock in the company! Naps are wonderful. :)
