Hiraeth ... etc.

Generally, I try guard against looking back over my shoulder for very long …. lest I walk into a light pole or something.

But! There's a certain something about chilly, rainy weekends that invites nostalgia.  For instance?  Yesterday morning I had this craving for a bowl of Malt-o-Meal -- something my mother made me eat, despite the fact I hated it.  Do they even make that anymore?

One of my favorite things about adult-ing: I settled for a bag of popcorn, a Hershey's kiss …. and called it breakfast.

Thanks for allowing me a Sunday show-and-tell?

Omega Bridge, Los Alamos, NM
I was never any good, but enjoyed ice skating for hours and hours at the outdoor rink in the canyon below.

That's me in the red pants (ca. 1972) helping Troy learn to skate.

Before it was a 'thing' my parents had Charlie Brown trees.
… and received lots of cards.

Don't let the dress fool you …
This was my kind of clothing.

A 'few' years later ...
The picture quality is awful, but this 1985 image with Troy and my mother is a favorite. It was a Very Good year.

Oh, the irony!
My former husband named these ceramic figurines, "Sarah and Joshua."  33 years later g'daughter Sarah would meet and marry Joshua.

* * *

OK, enough meandering down Memory Lane!
Here are a few snapshots from our Bible study brunch.

Because I was too 'scotch' to go out and buy a Christmas sweater, I grabbed the little battery-operated lights we used on last year's tree.

I think the Miss Creativity award goes to Shannon (left). She disemboweled an old pillow and used the stuffing and a glue gun to create her 'snow suit.'
For someone who coded in the back of an ambulance just a couple months ago, 72 y/o Brenda (right) looks mighty cute!

Love these ladies to distraction.

… almost as much as I do y'all!
Truth!

I hope to be back again before Christmas with an 'oldie but goodie.'  In the meantime, please keep warm and safe!

Hugs, Myra

  1. Sadly the season always bring me very melancholy. I haven't seen my family in like 10 years...my folks have to stuck to the adage, "out of sight out of mind." Our 31st wedding anniversary is New Years Eve and I will never forget what they said 33-34 years ago when I was proposed too, "You choose him, never come back." So, there it is. I was kicked out at age 18 and never looked back and STILL married to my high school sweetheart and former Marine. No matter how hard it got. Its just so sad...nonetheless, here we are and with a 23 year old who really doesn't know his grandparents (and not for the lack of trying). TMI.

ANYWAYS--the photos are great, thank you for sharing and wishing you a very Merry Christmas!!!!

    1. Oh Linda, this is absolutely heartbreaking. Yet, your love story is sure a testament to what counts. I hope you'll come to regard your Blogger tribe as family! xoxo

  2. when you post your memories and stories, every single one of them throws me smack dab into the past. the cards made me smile. since daddy was pastor of our church, my parents got so many cards there was not enough room to hang them. so many of them had cash in them, because the church could not afford to pay very much... when my mother died there were boxes and boxes of cards. a happy memory. our 1985 was a good year, the year we married. OMW! I am also to 'scotch' to buy things I wear one time or even things I can wear for years... daddy was Irish Mother Scot/Irish I am cheap to the bone. that said I love the red necklace and the lights are perfect. for next time, go to dollar tree, buy a garland of jingle bells, tie them together and wear as a necklace. I have worn mine many times. santa hat and bells. a winner and cheap. bring on the show and tell. I think I need to rename my blog to that since that is what I do day in and day out.. bob has been known to say, YOU PUT THAT on the blog? of course I did. Love you Myra, Merry Christmas. and I remember when you were soul searching over not going to the Bible study. so glad you did.,

    1. Maybe on account of the internet and social media, cards aren't regarded with such fondness anymore. (*sadface*) That's a great suggestion about dressing up my outfit from the Dollar Tree!

  3. It is good to have memories of days gone by. Especially happy memories. They sustain us and keep us going when life gets difficult. They also make good songs in musicals about cats. I mean ... whoever heard of cats singing. I hear them at night screeching amorously at each other. Or is that the neighbours?

Anyway ... as I was saying before our cat interrupted me. Memories and nostalgia are good for us. These days nostalgia has changed. People are only nostalgic about the latest model of cell-phone they had; or the last tablet or other technical contraption they bought.

Which reminds me, time for me to take my tablet. I'm not sure what it's for. Perhaps to stimulate the writing cells in my brain to write some article or Blog post or other. I prefer whisky actually. It stimulates the those parts that few other things stimulate.

Have a wonderful Christmas Mevely with your family and friends. Wishing you the best of everything always.

    God bless.

    1. For sure, that's a favorite song. I wasn't fortunate enough to see the stage play ... have you? I'm still not sure about watching a feline sing. :)

    2. No, I haven't seen the stage play; but the cinema version just out is being advertised heavily on TV right now. I just can't get my head round cats with human faces. Although I'll admit the memories song is good.

      God bless, Mevely.

  4. A wonderfully nostalgic post, Myra.
Yes - Malt-o-Meal still exists but I haven't had it in a long time. When I was a kid they made chocolate Malt-o-Meal. Lately I've been eating cream of wheat. I love hot cereal.

All the photos are great. The one of Omega Bridge is spectacular - and the one with Troy and your Mom is so sweet.
I laughed when you mentioned Charlie Brown Christmas trees.

The tradition of hanging Christmas cards was wonderful. My parents used to do it. I miss those traditions of the past.....
    now it's electronic e-cards (YUK!).

I'm amazed at the irony of Sarah and Joshua.
Have a fantastic Christmas! Warmest wishes to you and your family.

    1. Thank you, Jon! How did I not know about chocolate Malt-o-Meal? There's something special about hot cereal on a cold day. Have you gotten around to trying those grits yet?

    2. I'm sure grits exist in Tennessee but I haven't found them yet.
They probably still make chocolate Malt-o-Meal. I'll have to check next time I go shopping.

  5. Sherry kept saying have you read Myra yet? We both grabbed some internet at the same time. I will try to cut and paste this on. LOL
As ALWAYS I love the entry and all the pictures. What a joy it must be to find that group of ladies. I always wanted to ice skate, but only once in my life was the mill pond froze enough, and of course no one had skates. Love the pictures from youth but especially that of Troy, you and mom. Super.
    Well here goes. Love ya
