A Baker's Dozen

Happy Faces, Frowny Faces

When Jack posted some of his favorite (and not-so-favorite) things, I thought, "Great idea! I want to do that, too!"

It's taken me a few months, but here you are.  If something resonates, won't you let me know?

I like ...

The way Tom's voice sounds when he's talking to little Grace.

Mother and grandmother's handwritten recipes.

Cold mornings when I turn my car's heater on full blast, then roll down the windows. (Wheee…. I'm a hot fudge sundae!)

All things sloth … my spirit animal!

The Chipmunk's Christmas song. I don't care if I'm in a crowded elevator. When Alvin sings, "Me, I want a hula hoop"?  Well, it may not be pretty but I'm singing along, proud n' out-loud.

Large families … in particular, the Hartsock's of Albuquerque, N.M.  Mom Lindsey is always funny, sometimes naughty … and now, pregnant with #10!  (This, after having had her tubes tied!!!)
I think Betty will agree, we fans are super anxious to see if #10 is a boy or girl.

                                        and finally....
Everyone of you!

On the flip side....
Now, I refuse to list any physical, emotional ills or natural disasters. Rather, random annoyances.....

When a reporter refers to an individual as 'elderly.'   Several lines later I discover he/she's younger than me!

Lotion pump bottles that never quite empty.  I've a couple hidden under the sink, bottoms up.  'Gonna get all I paid for!

Having to hunt to find (sometimes indecipherable) expiration dates.
Truth!!!!!

Swatting at gnats ….. which aren't actually there.
Cataracts, anyone?

'Busy' granite counter tops.  Can't tell you how many times I've had to perform the 'flat-hand pitty-pat' to locate a piece of floss, a hearing-aid battery, earrings, plastic bottle tops … all of which have disappeared into the pattern.

Insincere blog comments. I'll bet you know of what I speak.
Thank goodness, this blog's never been on the receiving end; you guys are the best!

Happy New Year!  Promise, you'll stay safe out there?

Hugs, Myra

  1. I love those things too (except I don't know who the Hartsocks are). I can sound just like Alvin, by the way! And I get annoyed by the same kinds of things you mentioned! Sending love & hugs to you and Tom, in all sincerity, with many blessings wished for you both in the new year!! xoxox

    1. Oh, I want to hear you channel Alvin in person sometime! The Hartsocks' family photography is something popular out on Facebook right now. The way in which she writes, I feel like I know them personally.

  2. You need to (ifyou haven't already) record Tom talking to Gracie :) I can't wait til January 10th to see what Baby Hartsock is (I'm going with boy). They are so cute as a couple and a family and I'm glad you told me about them!!! So cute you like sloths! Honestly, never met anyone before that did :) Totally agree about searching for those expiration dates. Really, they should be clearer out there for some products!!

Loved your favorite list and your not so favorite list. When I was typing, a doctor would refer to a 60 year old as elderly and as I was 60 at the time, I'd be yelling (in my head) "I'm not elderly!" Wait til he turns 60 and then see if he thinks he is elderly!

Happy New Year to you and Tom too!!!!!

    1. That's a great idea about recording Tom with 'his baby girl'! Always makes me smile when I see that you've liked something on Hartsock's, too. I think you're right about #10 being a boy.

  3. I'm with you on using up the LAST DROP of lotion or soap in a bottle! I've even been known to cut the bottom off so I can scoop out the last bit.

  4. Bahahahaha! That expiration date thing is soooo me and Tim. He is the one who thinks everything goes bad 3 days BEFORE the date and me? Well...if it doesn't stink or hasn't turned a funky color or grown fur...

  5. Wow - where to begin??
I like handwritten recipes and still have many of my mother's.
I HATE expiration dates that are completely unreadable - and I find them frequently. Is this deliberate??
I haven't heard the chipmunk song in a very long time but I love it (brings back memories).

Sorry, sloths don't turn me on.
And large, cutesy families annoy the living hell out of me.
Lately I have been swatting at black specks that I thought were gnats. It's unnerving.

It irritates me when I get a blog comment from someone who obviously didn't read my post. Happens occasionally.

    BTW -
I responded to your recent comment about the auld lang syne cup. That is WAY too expensive!!

    1. Deliberate? I suspect so. And now I've given myself an ear-worm featuring the Chipmunks. Thanks for assuring me I'm not a cheap-skate (re. the auld lang syne cup).

Happy New Year.

    1. I'm going to turn 70 in March -- but think (hope!) I look nothing like my g'ma did at that age. I'll bet your request for their recipes makes your relatives feel really good.

  8. I mean this comment most sincerely. Honest I do ...

I hate it when it says on a bottle or packet, "For expiry date see bottom". I have looked at my bottom in front of a mirror and there's no expiry date there!

Why can't they put the date where it says "For expiry date see bottom"?

Have any of your readers checked their bottom lately?

Happy & Healthy New Year to you all.

    God bless.

  9. Pregnant after having her tubes tied??? Well, God certainly had other plans, didn't He? That is a large but lovely family, Myra!
Alvin and the Chipmunks were my favs growing up, and I still love hearing their Christmas song, as corny as it is. I'm all about smiling at the silliness!
And yes, I check the expiration dates faithfully, but do hate having to search high and low for them. Victor's comment is too funny!
Blessings in the New Year, my friend!

    1. Smiling at the silliness, indeed! I wish manufacturers would just standardize where they affix those dates; like, right there with the ingredients.

  10. amen sister on ALL your dislikes. I am the person in the house that BELIEVES in expiration dates, bob does NOT and will drink milk that smells funny. those gnats are called floaters and whoo boy do I dislke them. I also dislike to the point of HATE real gnats. I have never had granite so don't know about the loss of things but I do know I dislike the busy because I don't like to look at busy stuff. I am the minimalist. even for counter tops... I can pick insincere comments from blogs or when talking to people. really dislike that. I mean who says to a person who comes into Sunday School,I love your hair, with an embarrassed look because her hair is NEON reddish pink? I said NICKI did you do that? and she laughed and said I did it all by myself. I will go get the beautician to tone it down. I have to say even the tone down was a bit much.

    1. Sounds like our men are just alike. I'm always telling Tom "That's a pretty stupid way to get sick." I remember when living in Tampa we'd call them "no-see-ums."

  11. Bahahahaha! I am one of those people who will not eat or touch anything close to or with an expiration date, nope.

I love sloths, smiles. That has to be my spirit animal, LOLOL.

Don't even get going on the lotion bottles, sigh.

...and I am thankful for you, smiles.

  12. LOL Love this one. I got a kick out of the 'voice' and smiled. Then embarrassed at the graphic on 'Expiration dates'. We just threw away a 'weeks; groceries from Mark's (our old) house here in FL. I'd kept some but the cans were 'rusty' from 2013. LOL
Most of this could be Sherry (especially the lotion!!!!) And ELDERLY I LOL!!!!!
    Love it as always.

  13. With us it’s not lotion but the shampoo and shower soap. When hubby starts new bottle I turn the other upside down and use until empty or as close to empty as I can get.
    Take care, Sheila

  14. One of my little granddaughters recently told me she was like a sloth, it was her favorite animal and I smile because she has really no ideas what the word slow is. Not like me ...who is slower than the turtle Ha! I told her gerndma was a sloth. I do have two bottles of lotion under my sink turned upside down right now trying to get the last of the tin out.
waste not want not, or so I was taught.

  15. Myra, I love your like/dislike list. I might do something like that...if I ever write another blog post! Now, I must know who the "Hartsock's of NM" are! 10 babies!!! Can you imagine!?

  16. I'm so with you on the description of "elderly." On some Facebook page today a woman talked about her 70 year old father and how he is still with it. Not in so many words, but that was the gist. Can you hear me screaming all the way from NYC? Someone else commented on this, but it still bothers me. On the flip, Love seeing recipes in my mother's and aunt's handwriting. Happy and healthy new year, my friend!
