… Pondering
How hard (it is) to believe this week marks one year since we flew out here to look for homes. Despite the bumps and wrinkles, moving to Alabama is one of the best decisions I've ever made. Even the not-so-good days far exceed the last few years I spent not living, but simply enduring.

What on earth took me so long?

Foggy mornings, 50* days, fallen leaves … these are a few of my favorite things. If I could save time in a bottle!
… In the Kitchen
More green chile stew!
This time I put almost a cup of Hatch in the mix ...but even 6 hrs. later Tom was fearing it might be inedible. But no! After warming overnight we've consumed almost half!

Exasperated.
Remember Tom going up on the roof a few weeks ago to trouble-shoot the leak?
The other morning we were enjoying breakfast in the sunroom when little Gracie began barking hysterically. I rounded the corner to see her staring up at the kitchen ceiling … then, an unmistakable sound: "Drip, Drip, Drip."
Of course, not having his hearing aids, Tom couldn't hear a thing. He went up, and sure enough confirmed what our little leak-detector heard.
Not only that!
Behind a partition at the other end of the house he discovered a big bucket collecting water.
Since then, roofers have been out to inspect and give us their quotes. Both confirm these leaks are at least 3 years old.
I am so cross at that so-called inspector!
… Grateful for
Tom's willingness to 'go with the flow' when I get a yen to visit an estate sale. Rather than sit and glare at the ceiling, we took the ride Friday. I didn't find any cute ornaments, but couldn't leave this sweet bear behind!
I think I shall call her Inga, after my maternal grandmother.
… Interested in
Yes, I stopped in my tracks and squealed like a little girl. I've never been privy to watching leaves fall, but gosh. They intoxicate my senses! I've never seen a red one before!
Not that we need it … but I'm wondering how affordable it would be to adopt a mature maple?
… Planning
Mother's recipe box rarely gets used anymore. So?
I love colored index cards, and always keep a few in my car and in my purse for those moments I want to capture a thought. What about re-purposing this as a repository for future blogs?
Do you utilize anything like this … a notebook or a planner, perhaps?
… Resolving
Only a mile down the road, Village Green has the prettiest walking trail! Weather permitting, I'm going to try and step up my walk-a-mile Thursday to an everyday thing.

I am enjoying my walk a mile each day, a mile alone and a half mile with my two old sweeties.. wish we were close enough to walk together. if I had a partner I could walk two miles.
ReplyDeleteoh noooooooo on the roof leak and that bad inspector. he should have found that leak.. in Floridia there is no buyer beware any more.. the law says it has to be disclosed and if not the seller is responsible unless there was an as is clause.
Inga is adorable.. so where have you lived your whole life that you did not see falling leaves or red ones? always in AZ?
Oh, I wish we might walk together! The distance seems twice as long when I'm alone. Let's see, I grew up in high-altitude New Mexico, loved West Texas, and of course, never noticed anything but palms and pines in Florida. LOL!

ReplyDeleteIt's not everyone that has there own personal leak detector. How cute ! So sorry the roofers had to be called out. I'm sure it won't be an inexpensive fix. But it has to be done for sure. Glad you had better things to occupy your mind. That little bear is much like one I made for Christmas gifts years ago, I love the material. It is wonderful that you are enjoying where you are. That was a major move, but sometimes we just have to do what makes us happy. I try to be thankful everyday, but especial the month of November. Hope your week is a thank full one too!
ReplyDeleteSo true … the price we pay for peace of mind, for happiness! Believe it or not, your choice to rent has crossed my mind more than once! I must remember, there's always something for which to give thanks.
DeleteAfter living in Southern California for thirty years - where the leaves on the trees only turn brown from the smog - you can imagine how enthralled I was when I moved away and saw my first real autumn (in the Ozarks, at that time). I can fully relate to your delight at finding the red leaf.

I'm really sorry to hear about your on-going leaky roof problems. It's a shame (actually a crime) that the inspector was so inept.
Presently I'm trying to get rid of 'possums that are nesting in my roof (one of the many joys of rural living).
If it isn't one thing, it's another....

Ya, it stings. When I remember how we went over and above what was required to ensure our new owners' peace of mind. Geeze. I just try not to visualize this previous owner somewhere laughing his *** off.
DeleteYES!on the not so sneaky leaks. There are laws when selling property (land) that under oath you say I do not have knowledge of any dangerous substance buried on this land. (or something to that effect) In NC there is also a statement like that on cars and houses. Owners would know about a leak like that. It is shameful to not tell a new owner. Many states take the position, 'Buyer Beware' I do not like that approach.
ReplyDeleteoh BTW, I have, not 16 inches from my hand, a little book sent to me by a sweet lady named Myra, the Book is entitled "The Conversation Piece", I use it often instead of a recipe box. (BIG SMILE!)

Aw, thanks for saying that and putting a smile on my face! Ya, I wonder how long the previous owner thought it would take before we noticed the big yellow bucket in the attic. Disappointing!
DeleteIts warmer where you are than where we are this morning, LOL :) 47 degrees this morning here! It is great that you made the decision to move! Always being closer to family is a great thing! Leaves changing are such a great sight, glad you are enjoying seeing it all! Ick with the roof and the inspector. Can you complain somehow or at least leave a not too positive review on some site?

I thought so, but just this morning Tom pointed out his (the inspector's) hold harmless clause. The little devil on my left shoulder wants to write the previous owner a nasty-gram. (LOL!)

DeleteThe inspector's report contains a hold-harmless clause, but that's not stopping us from reporting him to our real estate agent; maybe she won't be so quick to recommend him in the future.
GO YOU WITH TRYING TO WALK EVERYDAY!~~ I need to do this also! Ugh to the roof leaks - that is awful the inspector did not catch them!! Glad you are happy in your new home and location though!!! Happiness is everything!

DeleteThere was a Maple tree in our backyard when I was a kid and it turned the most beautiful colors in the Fall. That soup looks delicious! Thanks for the recipe link! We took a risk and moved nearly 30 years ago. So happy we did! Sorry to read about the leaks. Wish the inspectors could be sued! That would make them a little more careful! That treasured recipe box would work well for your plan. I should keep track of thoughts, but I don't and then don't remember when I need to. The joys of getting older. Pfthttttt... That looks like a great walking trail. Enjoy it!!

ReplyDeleteLove my daily walking. I'm able to do errands and walk and I've made it a regular part of my day. I'm starting to fret about not being able to keep up my miles when I have my hip replaced in January. Definitely need to leave that worry for January.
