I really, really don't like to dry dishes. Even as a child, I'd volunteer to wash ... even if it meant wearing those ugly rubber gloves mother kept at the ready.
So, where's this going? Last year - in an effort to cut back on our electric - I began doing dishes by hand ... and sticking them in the dishwasher to air dry overnight. Out of sight, out of mind!
Except, if he's around Tom insists on grabbing a dishtowel and starts drying. I know. I should be tickled to pieces he wants to help. Probably, I'm just bummed he doesn't appreciate the efficiency of my plan. (*smile*)
Shortly after last month's anniversary I had to conclude, Tom and I are kitchen incompatible --
Remember what I said about Saran Wrap? He actually makes that satanic stuff work nicely! I like select-a-size paper towels ... him, Not.At.All. Following a recent burger-and-onions extravaganza, our kitchen smelled like "Bubba's Place." Wow. From the way he recoiled when I began spraying the Lysol this way and that, you'd have thought it was pepper spray. I looked to see he'd retrieved something called Fuzzy Vanilla. And cracked up.
Oh, there's more. Lots. But that's OK. Excepting weekends, we rarely eat the same things or at the same time. I'm curious how all this is going to work when I'm no longer working. One reader mentioned it was the size of their kitchen that first 'sold' her on their house. Me, I'm thinking smaller is safer!

Still, I've got to quit putting certain things out in the Universe. I'll never forget one old preacher's analogy: "You keep saying s***, you're gonna keeping stepping in it."
See, a few days later I came out of work to discover one of my car tires was flat as a pancake. "No worries" someone offered. "Just drive it down to the maintenance yard and they've a compressor you can use."
Oh no, no, nooooo!
(I don't care to play the poor pitiful female card, but yep. That's just what I did.)
And my (non) love affair with the color blue? When Tom invited his buddy and wife over last weekend, we knew our desperately ratty patio chair cushions must go. (Eventually, I'd like to replace them with Sundrella fabric, but I'm not ready to re-mortgage the house to do so.) What an unpleasant wake-up call to discover what retailers - even WalMart - were asking. Then, walking into Fry's I spotted a big 'close-out' sign advertising chaise cushions for only $19.99. Of course, they were all blue, but I wasn't going to sneeze at the price.
Funny thing, I don't think they look all that bad.

DeleteSaran Wrap is definitely Satan's toy. I've never figured out how to use it without getting hopelessly tangled remnants....and being inspired to say vile words that I never thought were in my vocabulary.

Drying dishes? I don't mind the task, but I prefer to kinda let them drip-dry on the dish rack. Of course, here in humid Tennessee it takes months for anything to dry. Many months....
Blue is my favorite color. I wouldn't decorate a house interior with it - - but it looks great on your chairs.
BTW- Lysol simply masks bad odors with a far worse one...

I like the cushions! They look comfy and what a great bargain! I'd go with a bigger kitchen myself. I like the set up of the house, but in the kitchen if we are working together, we seem to be in each other's way a lot. Could be a bit bigger, but then we might still be in each other's way. I don't like the way hubby cleans up the dishes and try to get to the sick first, but oftentimes he beats me to it. At least it is getting done, right?

you know why I love you and your post??? because you are another ME... about 95 percent of what you write is like you were writing about me.. I love pick a size towels, he does not, we eat one meal a day at the same time, the others I stay out of the kitchen until he is eating. we have a HUGE kitchen and I always wanted one. we are both retired. the dog, Bob and I always want the same 4 sq feet of space. smaller is better. we can't work together, what we want is always right where the other is standing. and let me tell you, if you think thinks are rough now Wait until you both retire, 24/7 is NOT GOOD... we bicker, fight, argue all day and about everything and anything. but it is better than being alone... I don't like blue either and own nothing in the house that is blue, but I do have dark blue in clothes. the cushion's look good, but I would not buy them either. I love your post, keep them coming. also I never dry dishes. I don't have a dishwasher, but have a drainer, I wash and let air dry, each time we eat, I wash the dishes and by the next meal they are dry and we use them again, they dry over night and I put them up at breakfast. beside drying with a towel puts germs on the. air dry is the way to go.

DeleteI laughed out loud this morning when I read your phrase, "same 4 sq. feet of space." That is so Tom and the dogs and me.
I'm home alone so can't compare or complain about what goes on around here, but when DDH was living he stayed out of my kitchen. He did the outside work and maintained the cars but I took care of the house including the cooking.

DeleteI had to chuckle while reading your post. I guess I am lucky that Joe doesn't cook and only helps with the dishes when we use paper and he can throw them away. I DO use the dishwasher but wash the pots and pans by hand. As much as I think having a man in the kitchen who like to cook would be great...I'm happy with who I have and that the kitchen is "mine". :)

DeleteI love my tiny kitchen. No room for anyone else but me. I quit using the dishwasher recently and started washing dishes by hand. Love it! I just let mine dry on the drainer and Harley puts them away. And I am not paying to fix the leaking dishwasher. I love your outside cushions. Wish I had that pool!!

As always, an entertaining read. Since retirement we share the kitchen. Our is a 'butt-rubbing' kitchen and we love it. She cooks and I clean. She gets up set, but usually when I cook I try to clean up. She resents it. I try to tell her I am trying to make up for all the times I was away, or just lazy.

DeleteI often let my dishes air dry and put them away first thing in the morning. We don't work well in the kitchen together either. This year when we replaced our patio cushions I found a great price somewhere online. We normally pay close to $300 and I found them for a little over $100.
