..... aka, idle question time!
So, I recently remarked to a co-worker, "I miss gargling with Lavoris."
(Actually, I enjoyed sipping it.)
"That's OK", Brian replied. "I liked to drink the Kaopectate."
Keeping things short 'n sweet ...
Were there any non-USDA approved items you liked to consume as a child?
What happened?

I didn't do much illegal consuming as a child. That all happened after I hit the blissfully unrestricted realms of so-called "adulthood".
ReplyDeleteAs a kid, I did have an unwholesome passion for Vicks. That was back in the good ol' days when Vicks was SO STRONG that just unscrewing the cap would blow your socks off and catapult you to the other side of the room.
Nowadays Vicks does not provide its users with a mind-boggling "rush". It is so weak and safe that it's not worth inhaling. Or eating....
Dang, you crack me up!
DeleteYa, Vick's was every mother's magical elixir. And, do you remember those nasal inhaler sticks?
Yes, I do remember those inhaler sticks. I'm assuming they are now illegal.
DeleteThose inhalers are still around, thank goodness. There's nothing else that I know of that makes it possible to breathe at night while suffering from one of those reeeeeally bad colds.
DeleteI am laughing my head off, Lavoris was nasty to me and Kopectate was and still nasty. really nasty. I am straining my brain to see remember, but I don't think I ever drank anything I should not. I did smoke a cigar at age 12 and 3 puffs and a good throw up later never touched tobacco again. I was to busy eating cake and cookies and candy and fried chicken and fried pork chops and gravy on rice... all that good old fat making stuff
ReplyDeleteOh, you've got to tell me more about the cigar someday! It sounds hilarious!
DeleteIn retrospect, I wish I'd done something like that and saved 40+ years tobacco addiction.
I had an unhealthy relationship with no-bake chocolate cookies and though they are not forbidden by the USDA, they probably should be! LOL My BFF and I would make a batch and eat all of them on a Friday night while watching Chiller Theater.
ReplyDeleteNow that's funny! Nevertheless, I hope you smiled, recalling those times with your BFF.
DeleteStacy's comment (below) saves me having to say, "huh?" (about Chiller Theater).
The only thing I can think of is children's vitamins or St. Joseph's baby asprin. I thought both were good.
ReplyDeleteTerri, I wonder if anyone not from OH or PA knows about Chiller Theater? My friends and I loved that show! Did you know Chilly Billy passed away last year or the year before?
No, I'd never heard of Chiller Theater! Here, I thought my memory was going to pot. LOL.
DeleteBaby aspirin? Whoa, that's a good one. Makes my taste buds shudder, tho!
Sherry said to mention that she loved the taste of Bayer Aspirin and ate may too many and knew it, but had no ill affects.
ReplyDeleteI did three Alka Seltzer doses in a row, loved the fizz and bubbles. No ill affects either.
Stacy, and here Sherry! My tongue is recoiling. HA! Thank God, your bride wasn't affected.
DeleteI only tasted Alka Seltzer once in my life, then promptly up-chucked. (TMI?)
While snooping through my mother's dresser drawer, my BFF and I did, however, discover a chocolate bar that turned out to be Ex-Lax.
My sister and I ate an entire package of Red Man Chewing Tobacco when we were young. Talk about sick!!
ReplyDeleteAn entire package? OMG, Paula. Today's helicopter parents would be shrinking in horror. Wonder we survived our childhoods, huh?
DeleteMy mom just laughed at us when we were puking up the tiny pieces of tobacco and continuing to deny that we had chewed any tobacco! God, were we sick!!
DeleteI too with Bayer Children's Aspirin, no side effects though (but relatively healthy at my current age, so who knows??)
ReplyDeletebetty
So grateful we're all relatively healthy! This was posted in jest, but there are such real dangers. I've a former classmate whose adopted grandson from Ethiopia discovered the pretty package and tried eating drain cleaner.
Deletehad to chuckle over the Lavoris and Kaopectate. i used to eat raw ground beef and never suffered any ill effects. in fancy circles they call it steak tartare .
ReplyDeleteGosh, you'd be a gal after my dad's heart! One of his great pleasures was visiting an olden butcher shop in Morris, Minnesota where the owner would prepare he and my uncle raw ground beef on thick slices of black bread.
DeleteI tasted Brylcream hair dressing when I was a kid. I'm not a fan of that product.
ReplyDeleteHa! ... a little dab'll do ya? (Sorry, I couldn't resist!)
DeleteWe used to have a water cooler where I worked and I loved getting a cup of refreshing cold water from it...do miss the cooler but not the work. Kool aid was a drink of choice as a kid and one I gave to my kids too. Remember the big controversy over the red dye? That one makes me ponder...
ReplyDeleteOh yes! That red dye scare was a big deal, for sure. I loved Kool aid, too.
DeleteI recall those items very well and many more. Vicks is a life saver.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is! Thanks for visiting, LV!
DeleteHow about X-Lax? I mean, come on! How stupid was it to make a laxative that looked and tasted just like chocolate...?
ReplyDeleteAnd there was a fruity alcoholic beverage in the '50s that LOOKED like soda pop. My girlfriend and I split one, because we thought it WAS soda. Can't remember what it was called... Kix, maybe?
And surely, most of us tried eating that yummy-smelling white paste we used to use in elementary school...
Yup on the X-Lax 'chocolate.' My mom was so freaked, she phoned the doctor who told her to make me swallow raw eggs to vomit. Not something I'm likely to ever forget.
