Easter Parade

Welcome to Saturday 9!

... and thank you to Crazy Sam, for today's questions.
Unfamiliar with this week's tune?  Well, click here and sing along!

This song is best known from the 1948 movie of the same name, but it was originally written for a 1933 Broadway play called As Thousands Cheer. In the play, a young man reads about the parade in a New York newspaper and decides to go and show his lady love off to parade goers. What's the most recent parade you attended?

I'm not a big fan of parades.
Yet, when I learned Sean Dietrich (i.e., Sean of the South') was named Grand Marshall of Millbrook's Mardi Gras parade, I was all agog.  (Is that still even a word?)

No if's, and's or but's ... he's the real deal.

On Broadway, the song was performed by Clifton Webb. He'd had a busy stage career, appearing in musicals as well as plays by Oscar Wilde and Noel Coward, but when he was in his mid-50s, he was considered too old to be a leading man. Broadway offers stopped coming. He was unexpectedly cast by Otto Preminger for the film noir Laura and a new career was born. He worked steadily in Hollywood for 20 years and earned three Oscar nominations. Tell us about a time you were grateful your life took an unanticipated turn.

Back in 2012 a certain (unnamed) hospitality organization suddenly acquired the Phoenix resort where I'd worked 10+ years.

Unfortunately, it took 5 more years for me to realize my mental health was more important than the almighty dollar.

When Tom heard me say I wanted to sell our house and move to Alabama, I think he thought I was joking.
Nevertheless, we did and I couldn't be happier.

Today he's fondly remembered by the students at UCLA who have benefited from The Clifton Webb Scholarship of the Arts. If you could give an endowment to a school or charity, what would you like it to be used for?

I'm all about no-kill animal rescue organizations.

The biggest chocolate Easter egg was made in Italy, measured 34 feet tall and weighed a staggering 15,000 lbs. Do you think it's possible to have too much chocolate?

Oh, ya!
Everything's better in moderation.

After chocolate, the top-selling Easter candy is Peeps Marshmallow Chicks. They're so popular that they were once the subject of a Jeopardy clue. Do you often watch Jeopardy?

I don't watch it so often anymore.  Back in the day, I loved Jeopardy!
Even if I don't know most of the answers, it's still a learning experience.

Back in the day!
My workplace (WTSP-TV) in Tampa/St. Pete

Jelly beans are also popular this time of year. In a 2024 poll, jelly bean fans responded that black licorice is their favorite flavor. It's Crazy Sam's least favorite. How about you? What jelly bean flavor is at the top of your list, and which is at the bottom?

Black's my favorite, too.  And cinnamon.
Least?  Strawberry.

We've been talking a lot about sweets this morning. The only holiday that generates more candy sales is Halloween. When do you eat more candy: Easter or Halloween?

Halloween ...
tho' I finally learned to buy only those candies I personally don't care for.

According to the National Retail Federation, Americans are doing more of their holiday shopping this year at discount "dollar stores" than at department stores like Target and Walmart. Do you often make trips to the "dollar store?" If yes, what do you usually pick up there?

I do my 'regular' weekly shopping via Wal-Mart's online cart.  (Knock wood, I've not been 'let down' by fresh produce yet.)

The Dollar Tree's shares a parking lot, however, and it's fun to 'pop in' for seasonal decorations or greeting cards.

These stoneware plates, for instance!
Easter table.
Want a good giggle?   I picked up these plates back when they were only $1, but the napkins?  I found a set of 6, Ralph Lauren -- at an Estate Sale last year for only $5!

Easter is considered the season of rebirth. What makes you feel refreshed or rejuvenated?

A good night's sleep!

  1. It's so cool that you got to meet Alex Trebek, Myra! We used to watch Jeopardy nightly while Danny's mother lived with us - she loved the show. You make a really cute Easter bunny, too.
    Happy Easter!

    1. Aw, thanks. I was so excited, and well ... Alex wasn't feeling well and you could tell he didn't want to be there. Jeopardy's just not the same since he passed.

  2. Those stoneware plates were quite the find! I am going to have to expand my shopping at Dollar Tree. I usually just go to the paper products, grab what I'm looking for, and check out. I could be missing a lot.

  3. I love the Easter Bonnets we used to wear to church. The ladies parading into church in their Easter finery were the only Easter Parade I ever saw. The last parade I went to had to have been a Memorial Day Parade several years ago. I haven't been to one recently. I do love the dollar store and I always get cards to send. Good find on your plates and napkins too. I hope you have a Happy Easter Day! Love, ma

  4. Interesting answers; especially about the sweets and chocolates. It's a while since we had Jelly Beans. I like licorice.

    Wishing you a Blessed Easter.

    God bless.

  5. I used to shop the 99 cent store - it was huge. They sold produce and lots of food items, everything. But they closed after the shutdowns. I also have enjoyed Dollar Tree but can't seem to get over them raising the prices. Here it's $1.50. You really have to know your prices. My other cheap fix is Daiso, the Japanese version of a dollar tree etc. Cute things.

I hope you have a beautiful Resurrection Day.

  6. Yes, I'm a Jeopardy fan, I love to play along, although it's not often I know the answer. Cinnamon jellybeans are the best, no doubt about it. You got to meet Alex Trebek-WoW!! You really look cute as a bunny. :0)

  8. There is so much "Sweetness" in this post today Myra. I am loving all the questions and your answers.
Its a BIG No on licorice for me. I do like the sour flavors best and the brand Jelly Belly which is located about an hours drive from our house.
Its been a while since I 've been in Dollar Tree. I like to go there for seasonal things and some shipping boxes and envelopes.
A Good Nights sleep resonates with me too. The last few nights have been a bummer sleep-wise. I don't want to be cranky !!
    Happy Easter

    1. I hear that, Sue! I had to set my alarm for 2am to put on the roast, so by mid-afternoon I was teetering on the edge of pleasant-ness. LOL!

  9. Alex Trebek and you? Wow...how exciting. Black Jelly Beans are my very favorite and the good thing about this is that no one else in the family likes them, so I get all I want. My sweet neighbor does a lot of her decor shopping at the dollar store and her house is always so well decorated and so cute. Wishing you all the Best Easter Myra...

  10. I can answer most of these at one time. No sugar for me for the last 8 years... I shop Amazon/Walmart online and delivered and have not been in a dollar store in the past year. I used to go there a lot, now he dollar tree is like DG so I prefer

The last parade I watched was at age 17 the Saint Patricks day in Savannah, Ga and I went to flirt with all the military. each branch had a band and soldiers/sailors/marines/airman. I married an airman.

  13. I am all about the no kill shelters too. I play a game on my phone called Treat and I play for local shelter dogs. Then when you meet requirements, Chewy send the shelter treats for the dog...hopefully they all share them. Loved your answers! Have a Blessed Easter weekend.

  19. I love your new hair do! You are so cute! And I enjoyed your answers...and seeing Sean Dietrich in a parade! Wow! And Alex Trebek back in the day! You really are a celebrity yourself! My youngest son Scott loves to answer the Jeopardy questions, and always astounds me at what he knows! I try not to eat candy at all, but if I do, a couple of jelly beans are okay, and I loved the chocolate covered coconut eggs, but didn't see any this year to buy. Probably a good thing as I really can't eat them without getting sick. LOL. Sorry I'm still so far behind in reading and commenting. Trying to get caught up! Have a lovely rest of your week.
