Rapid Roy (Saturday 9)

.... that Stock Car Boy!

Unfamiliar with this tune?  Hear it here.

To paraphrase 'Crazy Sam' --
We've committed to our readers that we will post 9 questions every Saturday ... some will have a theme, others will be totally unrelated.  Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice.  We hate rules! ... but we love to answer questions.  Here are today's.

The lyrics tell us that every Sunday afternoon we can find Roy at the racetrack.  What are your plans for Sunday?
No plans, really.  I prefer to leave the running around to those folks who still work weekdays and only have the weekends to accomplish their 'get-r-done' lists.

Roy is fearless behind the wheel of his '57 Chevrolet.  But it's just natural to feel fear every now and again.  What scares you?
Becoming infirm, totally dependent on others.
Right now, this is near and dear.  One day in early October Jean and Bob came for dinner; we were making plans to BBQ at their home.  The next week, she suffered a debilitating stroke.

Realizing her time here on earth was short, after Sunday services another gal and I drove to the rehab.  It's a beautiful facility, but oh, that peculiar aroma!  Jean was unresponsive.   Yet, when Sally turned on Andrea Bocelli's The Lord's Prayer and lay her cell phone on the pillow it looked like Jean was trying to mouth, 'Amen.'

Her husband and best friend claim they 'couldn't bear' to visit, but Pastor Janet was by her side when Jean passed Wednesday evening.  I'm heartbroken.  And scared.

Roy's been photographed grinning with a toothpick in his mouth.  Do you often use toothpicks?
Nope.

Legend has it, Roy learned to drive fast when he ran moonshine out of Alabama.  Moonshine usually refers to illegally produced whiskey.  What was the last alcoholic beverage you drank?
Gin and diet tonic.

This week's featured artist, Jim Croce, attended Villanova University, where he played in a band that performed at fraternity parties.  When his band was chosen to tour Africa as part of a cultural exchange program, he was excited to learn his host country's customs.  Have you ever traveled overseas?  What did your trip teach you?
Gosh, there's so much to learn!  I've been fortunate to travel through much of Europe, but here's a couple snippets:

1957, Paris:  7 y/o Myra's disappointed to learn the hotel room's bidet is not, in fact, a doll bath.

1997, Rome:  Contrary to my naivety, there's nothing remotely romantic or mysterious about gypsies.  Thankfully, we'd listened to the hotel clerk and secured our valuables in the safe before going sight-seeing.  (I kept a credit card at the bottom of my boot.)  That didn't stop a swarm of gypsy women/pickpockets from approaching, then surrounding us with 'hugs.'

.....that is, until I lashed out with the oversize safety pin I'd kept in my fist, pointy-end sticking out between my index and middle fingers.  Looking back, I was lucky they didn't try and retaliate!

Jim met his future wife, Ingrid, at a party.  They discovered that they both loved Joan Baez and Woody Guthrie.  Tell us about one of your friends and what you bonded over.
My first love and I played in the high school orchestra:  He on the upright bass, me a reluctant violinist.

Early in their marriage, while Jim was working hard to launch his music career, Ingrid helped make ends meet by baking bread and canning fruits and vegetables.  Do you have any frugal cooking tips or 'cheap eats' recipes to share?
'Fraid not.  I've done my best to forget the lean times, living in dumpy collegiate housing where we bought day-old bread and drank powdered milk.  Even my parents scrimped.  I'll never forget when, at a Denver restaurant, my mother exclaimed "Real butter!"

In 1972, Mark Spitz became a sensation, winning 7 Gold Medals for swimming.  After making money in endorsements and TV appearances, he settled into a career as a Los Angeles realtor.  Are you contemplating a change in residence anytime soon?
I hope not!

Random question:  Which of these "Top 10" lists would you prefer to be on -- the sexiest, the smartest or the richest?
Let's go with the richest!  Sexiest sounds burdensome, Smartest exhausting.  Richest means I could not only provide for those I love -- but be able to make a difference in the lives of those on the receiving end of worthy charity.

🤗

Thanks for visiting!  I hope y'all have yourselves a wonderful weekend!

Hugs, Myra

  1. Happy Weekend to you and yours. I'm going for dinner at my daughters house. My son who lives in town will also be there with his family. I don't think I'd make any of those top 10 lists but right now I feel like the world's best loved mom. My kids are so very good to me. I've never been out of the country except for a trip to canada. And that was before we needed a passport to go there. How times have changed !

    1. 'Best loved mom' -- who could want for anything more?! With all the turmoil and strive, I'm not anxious to travel outside the US anymore.

  2. Praying for Jean and family and friends. It is understandable to be scared and apprehensive. Jesus knows our feelings and is at hand to provide courage and comfort.

    God bless always, Mevely.

  3. This was a fun read Myra except the part about your friend Janet of course. I'm so sorry to hear what has happened to her. Sending thoughts and prayers for all!

  4. We think a lot alike, Myra! Your poor friend...how sad that her husband and bf couldn't overcome their emotions to be with her at the end. I hope she is whole and praising and dancing in heaven right now. Gin? Ugh. On a good day I think it tastes like pine needles smell. But most days I only remember when my bf and I snuck some as teenagers and only had diet root beer to mix it with. Bleeeech! It tasted like novocaine at the dentist's. (((shudder)))

    1. Yes, she so loved Jesus. Imagine seeing Him face to face!
LOL-ing about your libations experiment. Something similar once happened to my mother in her teens; thereafter she couldn't stand the smell.

  5. #1 Like you I usually go grocery shopping either Mondays or Tuesdays mornings. The stores are empty and the shelves stocked (or as much as they are with COVID).

  6. I want to be the richest, I want to live in a small motel on a beach, and the room only needs a bed, a coffeemaker, toaster oven, microwave a private bath a closet and a sofa and big screen tv with cable/internet.
I would never cook again except to put a bagel in the toaster and make a pot of coffee and never shop again because I would need nothing.
Never been out of the usa, I do carry a safety pin, a large one, to pin my keys to my waist, now I know it can be a weapoon of sorts, no gypse lurkeing but there are gangs here. LOL this is the first I have heard of Roy, his sound is rock and roll so is good with me. my biggest fear is 3 things that tie for 1st place.
fear of what happened to your friend, health putting me in a home, fear of bob dying and leaving me on one tiny income, no fear of dying, but don't want to be half dead and laying in a bed under control of someone else, especailly someone who is underpaid, overworked and hates me because she has to clean my diapered butt

    1. Your motel room sounds perfect! Except I'd need mine to be pet-friendly with an endless supply of hot water and A/C.

  7. ALWAYS I love your answers. Oh and Sally? Lord how sweet, the nicest thing I have read in a long time, THANKS.
You experience in Rome! Yeah about the same for me once in Istanbul. Not a good feeling to be over crowded!

LOL with a HA! about the doll bath, Good one for little Myra!!!
Love from down and over a bit.

    1. Thanks, Jack! Yes, Sally's a gem. I didn't realize Istanbul has a gypsy population, too. I'm become more than a little fearful of travelling abroad anymore.

  10. I loved reading your answers, except the story of your friend's death. At 79, which I just turned, that is one of my biggest fears--a debilitating stroke. So nice to see you as part of Saturday 9

  12. I see richest is appealing, but I'd go with smartest. Smartest is more interesting, I guess.
Jean must have been a lovely lady. She will be missed.

  13. The tragic fate of your friend Jean is sobering and frightening. Horrible things can happen to us at any age - - my biggest fear is old age, physical and/or mental decline....and being alone.

    Toothpicks? I occasionally use them

Diet tonic? I never knew it existed.

Hungarian gypsies will be the first to pick your pockets and extract the gold from your teeth (no toothpicks required....)

Rich, sexy, or smart? yup, I'd rather be rich. Smart will get you nowhere.

  14. Wow, what a story about the gypsies! I had heard of them of course and their cunningness but wow! I bet they were impressed that you had thought of something like that pin! I also like how you had your credit card in your shoe. Very clever!

So sorry about your friend, Jean. I do like what Victor said. I concur!

It could be fun to be the sexiest for just a minute, but then I do agree that richest could be very rewarding in helping others :)

  15. So sorry to hear about the loss of your friend, Myra. Yes, life is short, and we need to rejoice in each and every day the Lord has made for us to experience.
Only time I was overseas was a literature-linked trip to the U.K. Did encounter some gypsies in Ireland, but we had been forewarned and knew how to avoid that scam.
    Blessings!

  16. I am so sorry about your friend! It can happen so fast. My prayers to the family and you also.
I want to be on that richest list too. Just so I do not have to worry.

  17. So sorry to hear about your friend. I hope your memories and faith bring you comfort.

The gypsies gave you a great travel story, didn't they? Though at the time I'm sure it was more harrowing than entertaining.

  19. I am so sorry you lost your friend Jean. Life is a hard road these days. Jacey's grandmother was having a simple heart procedure, had a stroke. Lisa is flying out to be with her mom. Please pray. That Grandma Sharon was a character. I met her in the craziest way. I was helping Colton in his downstairs kitchen when she came out the stairs, introduced herself and asked if we could give her a few eggs, she was baking a cake upstairs. Jacey's dad had a stroke, day after Christmas 2021 but fully recovered.Jeremy's friend Tony, age 37, getting ready for knee surgery, they found blood clots. Jacey says her grandma has one behind her eye. It all seems so unreal to me. Just pray, God can handle anything and I try to remember it every single day I wake up. Sending hugs and love. Take care.

  20. I did like all the answers you gave here. I love things where we learn new fun facts about others. My hubby made a pot of ham and beans. I put it all up today.Rebekah and Zach had their monthly dinner with Jacey & Colton and Kaylee and Ryan on Saturday evening. She made a batch of homemade corn bread. Avery is in heaven. heeheehee Take care and sending you love and hugs and prayers for Jean's loved ones and of course, you.

  21. I enjoyed reading your responses as always, but my heart breaks for you in the loss of your friend. Especially as it was so sudden and unexpected. I know that makes it even harder to comprehend. I am sorry her husband could not cope with her loss, but I wouldn't condemn him. Each person is different, and for him that might have been the straw that would "break the camel's back" to see her like that. God knows his heart. Everyone grieves and accepts death differently. May God comfort his heart and give him peace. Oh, I love your answer to the last question. Yes, the richest would be very nice, especially with your attitude of helping others. I hope you are having a good week. Here it is Thursday already! Where did the week go??? Be blessed my friend.

  22. I like these responses. I am so sorry about Jean. I do not like nursing home facilities but if I had to say goodbye to a loved one I would be there. My legs are like jelly today. I do my Jack LaLanne workouts. Then I made a three minute egg, reminded me of my mom and me being a young working girl. Such a beautiful memory. Plus we both loved Jack! Only our son Jeremy & wife & our daughter Rebekah have said they would care for us even if it meant having a care giver at home. Hannah & Jake would take us traveling. Nick, well he is so all over the place. Noelle and Roger, she cared for my mom but that was pre full blown crazy liberal ideas! So ummm....no to them! Auntie Ang died the night they dumped her in the nursing home. Yet my SIL Joyce cared for her mother to the bitter end of a brain tumor. I have lost a great deal of respect for my brother as a result. But I chuckle, because I know Auntie Ang had a conversation with God, h e double hockey sticks, I will not be in a damned nursing home. She hated them. when Uncle was sent there she would not go but my mom and her big sister Mary fed him three times a day. They are truly saints. :-) Hoping you and Tom are well. We sent him a birthday card, Russian roulette with the post office, will it get there, will it not, perhaps it may land at another spot! LOVE to you & Tom both xo
