Eat Whaaat?

 Good morning!

My intentions were strong, but ...
my get-r-done not so much.

Besides, no-one wants to hear my grievances.  I still may need to rant, but today's not the day!

No. I just learned (that) today's National Eat What You Want Day!
How cool is that?

To be fair, Tom and I pretty much do that every day.
In fact, when my son asked where I'd like to go for Mother's Day I chose Mellow Mushroom.

Instead of ordering my usual ("Holy Shitake"), I opted for a Caesar salad ... and seeing Tom's pie, I regretted it the whole while.

Now that we're all grown-ups ...
Do you ever pause to wonder why you prefer certain foods to others?

Back in the 90's, a new book gained popularity.

It's promise ...
"Could eating a diet based on your blood type help you trim down and boost your immune system?"

The author claims that the foods you eat react chemically with your type.  And, if one follows a food plan designed for his/her type, their body will digest food more efficiently.

In spite of this sounding a bit like a Zodiac profile, I ordered the book for mother and I to enjoy.

After all, sometimes I'd wonder how the two of us could possibly be related.  She, who'd rather eat fresh fruit and grains to the exclusion of other foods.  And me, who takes pains to avoid both!

Yes, it's full of generalities.  But I must admit, he pretty much nailed me.  "Type 0 is predisposed to crave meat."

For instance?  Before going to Bible study I wanted a bite of something to tide me over.
Butterfinger? .....No.  A wedge of cheese? ......No.  I wanted -- and enjoyed -- several tablespoons of cold 'loose meat'  (aka, ground beef).

Anyway.  In brief, a Google search turns out that several others -- including Harvard and Dr. Oz -- lend credence to D'Adamo's theory.

Anyone's curious?  Here are some links to thumb-nail sketches.

Hey, I regard this as fun; not to be taken too seriously.  To quote one of mother's favorite sayings, "This old world would sure be a boring place if we all liked the same things."

How will you honor Eat What You Want Day?
Bon appetit!

Hugs, Myra

  1. I have never been to Mellow Mushroom; need to remedy that soon. I do remember that book about eating your blood type. LOL I looked at Type B since that is mine and what they say to avoid are some of my favorite things to eat - though in the case of ice cream - to be avoided - I don't eat it often because of the calories. I have some peanut M and M's around; might finish them today on eat whatever you want to eat day :)

    1. Told to avoid ice cream almost sounds sinful! I'm not fond of it myself, but Tom enjoys some practically every night.

  2. Aha, I was ok on my 'A' list of seafood until I read AVOID Lobster and Oysters, ARE THEY CRAZY! Hahahahaha And NO meat? WHAT? Yep I too would consider it entertaining rather than a requirement.
Anyway, I guess our choice today will be 'Tomato Sandwiches' .
But we too eat about what we want, hoping we are heating healthy! that too is a LOL
Sherry & jack, always an entertaining visit to your house.

    1. TRYING is the key word, I think. I was sure dismayed to learn peanut butter is considered 'harmful.' 'Thought all that fat content would be good for a shiny coat. (LOL)

  3. Interesting theory. I just left a comment over at Ma's blog saying nothing is off the table for me, moderation is the key. I seem to be more like your mom, I love fresh fruits, veggies and whole grains much more than meat or junk foods. Enjoy Eat What You Want Day!

    1. I've come to love fresh veggies -- but thankfully, so-called 'junk' food has never held much appeal.

  4. on this AB list, most of what I love and crave is harmful to me. I am a picky eater, I love southern cooking only and the less healthy the better. 76 years of eating it and here I am, and I have decided if its this hard to be 76 forget living to 99 or 100. ugh... I am in a down mood and that makes me want bad foods.

    1. I know, right? My father loved GOOD food the way some people love breathing -- which may have contributed to his premature death. Yet, as mother observed, if he had to deny himself he might not have wanted to live.

  5. Well....doesn't it just figure that all my favorites are under, the "avoid" category? Story of my life! Thanks for the info, though.

  6. I did not know today was "Eat What You Want Day". I guess I have been celebrating it all my life. I just eat every day without pre-planning.

Did you know that in an experiment asking people whether they preferred a bun with a quarter pounder burger, or one with a third pounder burger; most chose the quarter pounder because it was bigger. (???)

    God bless.

  7. Hmmm, this is interesting indeed. A lot of the foods I am supposed to eat (type O ) I've never even heard of. And I LOVE peanut butter...could not have survived childhood w/o it! It is still my favorite go to snack food in one form or another...on ritz, on graham crackers, on bread with apple butter or jelly, on toast, with bananas. Anyway, I agree with Martha about eating whatever you want in moderation...as long as we follow a basic balanced diet. I avoid a lot of sweets, don't drink sodas or alcohol or coffee, but I must have tea! I like most reasonable vegetables, at least the ones I've heard of. I could easily live without meat if I had to. It seems the older I get the less I like to chew. LOL. This was interesting and very insightful. Thank you for giving me some "food" for thought! Have a blessed day.

    1. Thanks, Pam! I'm an O, too and was super dismayed to see my beloved JIF pb was a no-no. Matter of fact, I enjoyed some for supper last night on (raw) summer squash.

    2. Hmm, never tried that before. I do eat it, JIF, yes!, on celery when I have good fresh crisp celery to eat! I am sorry some expert decided PB wasn't good for us, but I know differently! That is one thing I will NOT take off my diet! I sometimes eat a PB and apple butter sandwich before going to bed just to stave off hunger pangs until morning. LOL.

  8. As the unofficial King of Rants, I would enjoy hearing your grievances. I'm suspicious of anyone who never complains or rants....

Eat What You Want Day? One of the (many) joys of living alone is that I always eat what I want. Ice cream for breakfast, pizza at 2:00 a.m. The cats don't care and will never tell.

  9. I’m afraid I’m with your mother, except I eat more nuts than grains. One of my big indulgences is watermelon. Hog heaven. 😊

    1. My hubby loves that, too! Once summer at Girl Scout camp I was warned not to try and carry a big watermelon down the hill. But I knew best. Sure enough, when it fell and burst into pieces I was the 'baddie.' Maybe that's why I don't eat it? Ha.

  11. Type A+ here, I think I am okay. The lists showed which to have and not to have. I can handle that.

  12. Considering that some of the healthy grains and vegetables I eat every day are on the O no-no list I will pass.

  13. Myra, I got that book back when it came out and am a type-O also!! Beef, beef, and more beef!! LOL I do thrive on protein so there probably is something to it. Fun post! xo

  14. I'm type O and I do love meat, Myra! We had pizza last night with both sausage and pepperoni, so yes, I found it very satisfying. I have to say, though, that I do like fruits and veggies, too. Maybe, O is for omnivore!
    Blessings!

  16. I enjoy food. That's my problem. There is nothing much I don't like. Although these days I try to do more healthier eating than not. I love to snack too and that is my downfall. I eat too many sweets. Hopefully I'll be able to keep on track and live to grand old age. I enjoyed your post today. Always nice to learn something new.

  18. McDOnald's French Fries, my favorite junk food treat. We had a Pepperidge Farm chocolate cake and a coconut cake. POlished off that chocolate one today. HaHaHa - trying to be better with eating healthier. Oh my gosh it is so hard.

  19. Good for you on the salad but their pizza looks delicious. I've decided when we have Friday night pizza I'm going to bake two because I'm not going to continue to eat all the meats. I just make cheese for myself! Interesting about that book. I'm heading over to check out your links. Thank you.
