I may well be the most UN-woke person on Planet Earth. And you know what? I'm okay with that!
The names of this year's Grammy nominees meant nothing. In fact, when I heard 'Cardi B' I thought someone was referring to a medical procedure.
Hey. I enjoy laughing at myself as much -- if not more than my critics. I'm not particularly thin-skinned, but.
There are occasions that cause me to wince. Like the day I learned you're no longer supposed to put two spaces after a period. Or this morning when an etiquette 'expert' informed her viewers, using punction in a text is a big no-no.
I'm not exactly offended by a popular commercial. But annoyed? You bet-cha.

They're out there. Most of you have probably seen their boorish comments on friends' posts. Maybe even your own?

Still, I'm curious. It's something we discussed at ladies Bible study a while ago.

Ha! Loved this! I don't offend easily but if I am offended, you will know about it. By the way, I still put two spaces after a period. That is just not going away. I've been typing for too many years to change it now!

DeleteYou are so funny! I hate to admit it to you, but I love those progressive commercials and think they are hysterical. But yeah, on the rest. I learned to type with 2 spaces after a period, too, and have to go back and delete one all the time. As for the texting rule of no punctuation at all...my theory is it's because the young people don't know any grammar rules and we can't insult them by pointing it out with our commas and semi-colons. As for what I do when offended, I try to go to prayer first before I open my mouth. Sometimes I get guidance on what to say and sometimes God just puts his hand over my mouth and says move along.

DeleteHonestly, Myra, its a good thing to be Un-Woke, trust me :) I didn't realize you should not put punctuation in a text. Couldn't that get a big awkward on some texts if there is a big run on sentence or am I the only one with long texts? I heard that about the one space after a period, but this "old hen" isn't going to change her way; been typing way too long to get used to one space instead of two :)
ReplyDeleteAll have passed on by now, but my MIL did an unsolicited criticism about my mom and that changed our relationship (MIL's and mine) for the rest of her living years; like 20+ years. I don't think she realized what she said but it was still very unkind. Took me years to tell hubby about it.
We don't watch much TV these days so I haven't seen that new Progressive ad. I did like the ones with Flo in them. I imagine it has to be hard to be an ad writer these days with so many people getting offended so easily by this and that.
Cardi B is no singer in my opinion but she does enjoy her dancing and not in a Ginger Rogers/Fred Astaire way.

Delete"Woke" is the new liberal catchword. I had no clue what it meant until I looked it up. All I know is that illiteracy and ignorance are more prevalent than racism.
ReplyDeleteI am extremely self-critical and can't handle criticism very well - - but, strangely enough, I'm seldom offended by the opinions of others. I patiently tolerated four years of my "friends" (and enemies) trashing Trump.
I DETEST people who are easily offended, and there are a heck of a lot of them. Over the past few years I've lost an enormous amount of my blog readers over trivial things. Perhaps it's best that they're gone. If you can't tolerate opinions other than your own, you shouldn't be reading blogs.
BTW, I plan to continue typing two spaces after a period. And I never heard of Cardi B. - - but I hope we will discover a vaccine for it.

DeleteIt bothered my at first that WordPress wouldn't let me put two spaces after a period, but I got used to it years ago. Apparently the original reason for two was it was easier to read with the old type. Whatever, I do what feels best to me and am happy.

ReplyDeletePunctuation - the reason why people no longer put two spaces after a full stop, ( a period), is to save paper. Imagine if all the words were a little closer after every period you use how much paper you have saved by the time you have written a long letter or a book. It is like having shorter queues by making everyone stand closer together.
I have been told not to use too many periods in my writings to denote a pause. Like ... ... ... this! And also I don't use enough commas. Now I put a number of commas on the margin and when proof reading I stick them anywhere in the text. ,,,,, (Spare commas for anyone to use).

It took me forever to stop putting two spaces and also indenting paragraphs! There is no one on the face of the earth that will ever convince me to stop using punctuation and also to write entire words in text messages. I'm proud to see my kids are the same way. The progressive commercials totally crack me up. Some because it was my parents some because they are talking about me!

As far as texting goes, I don't really like texting anyway and wish people would not text so much. If you want to talk to me, pick up the phone and call me, unless I am sleeping of course. LOL. I like my punctuation marks, and I will continue to use them liberally as desired. That is probably the only thing that I am liberal about!!! LOL. Have a blessed and wonderful day!!!

DeleteI put two spaces and I use punctuation most of the time in my texts. I don't care what "they" say, I prefer to do it right! lol And yes, that commercial bugs me too. I kind of thought the first one was funny, but this one just plain bugs me and I have to make a wisecrack most every time I watch it. lol. I can't say any of this really offends me, but I do wonder, why do we have to change? lol

DeleteI am having trouble trying to come up with the comment because I'm busy making a list of my head of things that I want to go and type into Google search. The first one being I don't know what on – woke is. I watched the commercial and I don't fully understand enough of it to be offended so I need to watch it again. I once worked with a person for 10 years whose major thing in life was to correct everybody who misspelled or misspoke a word in other words if she thought we pronounce it wrong she had to tell us the correct way to pronounce it not even thinking about that she was a damn Yankee and I was a damn Rebel. Still makes me mad and it's been 14 years since I last saw her. I did not retaliate but I wanted to. I really do not like having anyone whether it be Social Media blog or in person point out mistakes because we all make them and I just don't see the need. I have a few times in my life retaliated but when I do I get so angry I do it in a really mean hateful way and then I suffer for weeks thinking about what I did

DeleteHA. This "woke" culture has really gone to folks heads. It takes a lot to offend me and I really do cherish folks comments etc...even the bad ones. Since I live in a "woke" state where everyone is offended by anything and where the common word is "F" this or that, sigh...where was I going? LOLOLOL--OH, simple times...yes, simple times...time to get back to living the simple times. Just my thought.

DeleteI seldom know the nominees on the Grammy's and to tell you the truth, this years other awards shows (Critics Choice, SAG and even the Academy Awards) are strange this year. I usually know and have seen every movie, etc. Not this time!! That commercial is annoying. I mainly DVR every show I watch so I never have to see commercials.

But since everyone else seems prone to air their displeasures (and quote vociferously), perhaps I should let them know that their derision of all whites, conservatives, Christians, absolute truth (as opposed to relative truth), etc. is offensive to me. I wonder if they'd listen closely--the same way they want me to listen to them?
