Happy March!
I'd initially planned to post something Monday eve ... you know, to observe my affinity for 1st's. Well, that didn't happen, but yesterday? I was all worked up to blog: Cold, rainy weather, (faux) fireplace ablaze... life is good!
Except. I remembered an upcoming birthday -- necessitating a card and stamps. To the Dollar Tree! ... where I scored not one, but a poke-full of St. Paddy's Day stuff and firm-bristle toothbrushes. Unlike a former co-worker, I don't observe the first of each month by saying "Rabbit" Rabbit!" but I do make it a habit to open a new toothbrush. Simple pleasures.
Tom's so funny. We were right there at Wal-Mart and he's in the mood for their frozen 3-cheese lasagna. I strongly suspect he just wanted me along to man the self-serve check-out -- but we wound up spending the better part of an hour. Aside from my father, I've never known a man who loves to browse the grocer's shelves the way he does.
OK, I'm blaming what happened next on a dear friend who (for the time being) shall remain anonymous. 😉
I'm busy scanning like I knew what I was doing, and Tom's over there bagging. I turned the cart about and began helping him load. Ready? Ready!
I'd not gone 5 feet when it occurred to me, I never paid for the groceries! Thank goodness, no-one seemed to have noticed but man, I was embarrassed.

Like a couple other March-baby bloggers, I've decided to celebrate my birthday all month long. And what better way than to jazz up the dining room?
This silk hanky was a gift to mother when my dad was stationed overseas.
As some of you know, he always bought me green carnations for my St. Paddy's Day birthday ... so ya, I feel bound to continue that tradition. (*smile*)
Oh, Tom says 'thanks' for the birthday wishes ... and kind comments on my 'scratch' German Chocolate cake. The other day Debbie and I shared a good laugh recalling when she visited me in Arizona and we made her a crock-pot chocolate cake. "To die for!" ... Best compliment ever!
So, I don't really want a birthday cake, but going forward, I'm taking a page from my DIL and let Publix do the baking.
Rather than spend hundreds on a professional cake for Grand #1's wedding reception, Lois bought several varieties and let everyone choose their own.
Clever girl uses those fleece throws they sell at Wal-Mart as table coverings.

OK. I'm gonna close and see maybe if there's a clogging tutorial to be found on YouTube.

Your dining room setting is a lovely prelude to spring. I remember those green carnations.
BTW - I have never dared use the self-serve check-out at Walmart. There's no doubt that I would mess it up Big Time.

DeleteI shall not give you the bad news then about self check out...they are NOT going away, as a matter of fact, I have it on good authority, they are fazing out the cash register(s) all together. I haven't worked that area in months, I am the door police now LOLOL (Hubby calls me that---and btw, I did tell you that story, right? My husband forgot to pay for the groceries WHILE I WAS AT WORK!). He came back and paid for them, so, no foul or harm...he actually was talking to a police officer in the parking lot when the girl said some old guy didn't pay for the groceries...yeah, that was him. ANYWHOOS.

DeleteI don't even know what to comment on first, I have tears in my eyes from laughing. I had to stop and tell bob the scanning story. that got the most laughs. you may remember last week, i went to the car without scanning or paying for 2 gal of milk 2 doz eggs and had to go back. I love the runner down the middle of the table. you are set for March and Your birthday.. I did not know a cake could be made in crockpot and am trying to figure out what the bag is in the crock.

Yes, I remember! I'm STILL embarrassed ... imagining how it would feel to be arrested for $59 in groceries. The bag in the crockpot is one of those disposable liners to keep from having to scrub the pot.

Walmart is going to self-checkout. My hubby said
when they do, he will not shop there anymore and
he is a retired Walmart employee and gets a Walmart discount.

DeleteI'm impressed that you get a new toothbrush on the first of every month. We change out several times a year and we get a new one if we've been sick. I'm at my desk reading and I may have laughed out loud at the Walmart scenario.

DeleteHappy March birthday ! So glad you are celebrating the whole month too. Birthdays are so special they do need some special days. I about a German Chocolate cake at the grocery store yesterday and will be having a piece every day. Hope it lasts the month, but I may eat more than one pice some days. I do loe them too. I do have a vase of Green carnations sitting on the entertainment center. My daughter actually thought they were real. But I pull them out every year and use them again to decorate with. DeleteOh my, so much to remember here...your birthday is on St. Patrick's day, and they didn't name you Patty? Or Patricia? So you have to wear green on your birthday every year or you get pinched? I've never made a cake in a crockpot. Is it good? I like the idea of a Publix cake for a birthday. Their cakes are always good. Didn't pay at the self check out? I can understand that. There's so much to remember...scanning, bagging, arranging the stuff in the bags correctly...I can't stand the thought that we will always have to self check out at WM. I like being waited on, but I don't like to wait to be waited on. They deliberately have so few cashiers open and such long lines that you have to self check out if you ever want to get out of there alive. LOL. Clogging???????Oh my goodness...be sure to do a video of yourself... Okay, enough fun for tonight. Thanks for the laughs. Happy EArly Birthday.

ReplyDeletemy daughter, for a time worked in walmart. she was in charge of the self checkout and said you'd be surprised at the number of folks who forget to pay and walk out. it's staggering. so the fact you remembered is impressive. love the festive flowers for your birthday. party party all month long.
ReplyDeleteWe heard possible up to 40 inches of snow! Oh no, my windows are opened today, I was happy. SO the hubby says we can get a corn beef and perhaps make it for the cold weather return. Maybe Rebekah will bake the bread. Your house is decorated so lovely.I love all the memories you have from your folks.
