I'm pondering
One of the gals in Bible study -- a mover-shaker sort -- has asked me to consider becoming a member of the newly-formed Lions Club chapter. I'm not really feeling the pull, but it couldn't hurt to meet folks outside the church.

Gosh! The last time I thought about something like this, I was in 10th grade and asked to join Rainbow Girls. Unfortunately, my dad put the stop to that right away. He was convinced 'those' kinds of organizations were at odds with the church.
In the kitchen
….. My poor slow cooker's still soaking.
I was so excited to make another batch of Hatch pork stew Friday morning, but failed to lower the temp before going to bed.
Thank goodness I'd an extra box of beef broth to pour atop the burnt offerings. Oh my, the 'aroma'!

So, one morning last week I happened on a (televised) interview with a local State Trooper.
Never in a hundred years could I have guessed! A part of their job is responding to stranded motorists … not just those involved in accidents. Good naturedly, he spoke about changing 'thousands' of tires. He said they even carry containers of gasoline for that hapless soul who thought he could find chapter gas on down the road a ways.
Per the Trooper's suggestion, I immediately put *47 in both our phone's contacts. And I wondered: If Alabama's Highway Patrol offers this service, what about the rest of the U.S.?

DeleteI love that kindergarten essay! So true! My grandpa was in the Lion's Club and they host my hometown's Sweet Corn Festival every year. It is a great organization. Keep us posted!! Happy birthday to your sweetie!!

DeleteIf you aren't feeling the pull, I'd say no to the Lions Club. You can wait for something you are interested in to come along. If you aren't happy with what you're doing you won't be putting your best face forward when meeting those new folks. Just saying.

DeleteYour dad was wise not to get you involved with the Rainbow Girls :) If I remember, I'll send you an email as to why he was wise about it (and if I don't send an email and if you are curious about it, nudge me with an email so I won't forget to do so). I would give the Lions Club a try. Who knows, it might be like Bible Study and you might find out that you like it (just don't volunteer for anything LOL). Happy early birthday to Tom! Wow soon to be 78 years old! How cute he made his own birthday cake! I bet it will be yummy!

DeleteAbout the Lions - my advice, whatever it's worth, is to pray about it for a few days. Somehow you WILL know whether to join them or not. God will let you know. If after prayers you still have doubts then it is not for you.
ReplyDeleteAs I understand it, here in the UK, if a car breaks down or stops on the motorway (highway) the police will soon attend. Stopped cars can cause accidents as other speeding cars assume they are moving and hit them. The police attend to check what's wrong and then call in for required assistance - e.g. change tires, move vehicle away altogether etc ...

ReplyDeleteDaddy was that way about all clubs. same as your dad. with our super long bridges here, the state patrol checks them regulary, there is always someone in need on the bridge. I did not know about the calling them though. ours is easy to remember, thanks for sharing. the essay is so true, but i did not learn it in kindergarten, but from my parents. i am so old there was no kindegarten
Truth! Once I had a boss at WTSP who ran out of gas on the Gandy. (Who DOES that?) Those long bridges -- particularly the Howard Franklin -- used to make my 'what-iffer' quiver.

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure about NY--we have a vast highway system here, I'm pretty sure they would come if called, although it might take awhile, grin.
Clubs were once the staple of small town living...I'll just leave it at that. I don't have thoughts either / or. Oh wait, maybe I do...I don't know how it is there, but here, in order to get a job, one must know people. Just saying.

DeleteIf "KindergarDen" existed as a kid, I don't know it. Yeah most of my life I thought it was GARDEN! It wasn't around the areas we were when the boys were little either. BUT I do like that graphic! I would like to know that is taught today, BIG TIME!

DeleteI remember having several relatives who were dedicated to the Lions Club. I personally stay away from clubs and organizations. Too annoying and restrictive.....but, then, I'm a misanthrope.

Yes. Not unlike HOA's, they can be restrictive. Annoying? Heck, as I get older that list gets longer and longer.

I'll gladly eat any cake at all - - but I do like white cake with white icing (is that racist?). This week, the only cake mix I have is a chocolate one.
DeleteThe last time I went shopping I accidentally bought pecan cake icing and I didn't like it. It really ruined the cake.
Unless it's carrot cake, I'll always take a pass and go looking for pie. :)

ReplyDeleteI don’t do many clubs either. But the Lions Club does important work with eye exams and affordable eyewear for folks with little money.
ReplyDeletethe lions club does good work. here they put out boxes to collect old glasses for distribution to those in need. it's heartwarming for sure.

ReplyDeleteI was in the Jane Jeffersons Club when I worked for the county. But all Democrats ran the show and it was a do it or else....so after that I never really joined much. Too bossy plus bad experience with our oldest son and Boy Scouts. WHen we told them we were not attending Jamboree you would have thought we told them we were robbing the organization. After that Jeremy said he had enough of them! People were in a cult like trance over that Jamboree and today the Boy Scouts have filed bankruptcy. Trying to please everyone has its faults for sure. MY late FIL was a member of the Elks Lodge and also Veterans of Foreign Wars. MY mom belonged to the Christians Mothers at church. The only other club I was in was a bowling club and I loved it both as a kid and an adult. Fond memories. HUGS xo
ReplyDeleteI love the kindergarten essay! So true! My Grandpa was in the Lions Club, and every year we used to attend different festivals held at the club. I am into a music club and every year we have music festivals organized by a music Institute in Coimbatore where we enjoy various live concerts.
