Sunday Soliloquy

G'evening!

For today,
This happened.
Anyone else?

I'm wondering
If there isn't a 10-y/o boy inside me.
While waiting at a traffic light the other morning, two police cars appeared out of nowhere.  With sirens and flashing lights alike, they must have been travelling 100 mph … and I really (really, really!) wanted to forget the grocery store and fall in behind. Forget immature. At my age, I'd settle for eccentric!

Outside the window
Betsy Begonia - set out on death row - is defying the odds.
"Never let it get direct sun.", they cautioned." Don't water the leaves."
Usually plants come here to die. Dante's Inferno comes to mind. Yet she seems to be thriving on inattention.

I'm grateful
For the good folks at AirNow!

Wednesday morning I was sitting n' puttering when I heard a loud, "Thump! Thump! Thump!"
… like someone was throwing a fast ball against our home's exterior brick. Naturally, the girls began an unpleasant chorus.

It was coming from the a/c unit. Tom said, it sounded just like a car would if something were caught in the belt.

While he was phoning our service provider, I began a packing list. (Mevely editorial: Lists are calming.)
No way I'm staying here on one of the hottest weeks in years!

Thankfully, a tech came out within the hour and checked everything stem to stern. He's totally puzzled what caused that noise, but said the unit's running just fine. What a scare!

One of my favorite things
My 'Saturday mug'
I gave this 'moustache' cup to my daddy for his birthday a long, long time ago.

I'm feeling
A little sad.
Speaking of fathers … my DIL says my son is having a hard time. We just learned Troy's baby girl (Grand #1) and her hubby are being transferred to Aberdeen, North Carolina.
Ironic! Tom's sis and BIL sold their home on Amelia Island and have built a place in Apex, NC.

My wish to see the Great Smoky Mountains may come true sooner than later!

In the kitchen
In preparation for yesterday's get-together, I was building my cauliflower/broccoli salad. Imagine my surprise when I opened the can of water chestnuts and saw fleshy-looking mystery strips.

For the record, bamboo shoots taste like nothing I care to consume. Because it was late, I waited until morning to carefully select the right product.
Has this sort of thing happened to anyone else?

Good to know!
I was 3 days ago old.

So, a new week's before us.
Ready or not … be safe!

Hugs, Myra

  1. Myra, Always fun to read a post from you! I have my dad's heavy old 'store counter' coffee cup/mug. It is so special to me.

Odd-how moving around works out sometimes, isn't it? I do hope you get to see the Smokey's -they are beautiful. xo Diana

    1. Thanks, Diana! Ordinary, inanimate objects like ours hold such precious memories!

  2. My warming drawer holds lids. My oven has a "warm" temp for a reason! LOL I hate to tell you that our AC unit gave us a similar sound once and when Joe went out and took off the cover, we found a chopped up frog that got into the fan. Yours sounds like the same thing. When I see police cars flying with lights flashing and sirens blaring, I just wish I had a police radio. Maybe some day! And yes, to the face I make when someone has "my" seat in church. LOL Love ya, Myra! Have a blessed week!

    1. I hadn't thought about a police radio. Wouldn't that be fun?

  3. HAHAHA
We visit so many new churches, I just know we get someone's favorite seat. I had a friend who had someone stand beside them in the aisle and finally said,'You have my seat.' LOL

I am with Nana above, it is always fun at your house!
    Sherry & jack
Now that you said it, I would love to have either mama or dad's coffee cup. What a nice thing to have to kcik in sweet memories.
I just learned about the warming drawer 3 days after you did I guess. LOL But it is always nice to learn something at 80. hahaha

  4. LOL, I'm going to ask hubby if he knew that about the drawer underneath the stove because that is where we keep our pans, etc. Clever!

Always sad when a child moves away. But its not that far away is it? Not the convenience of being in the same city, but it could be like Germany, right?

Glad too that the A/C unit was not broken. Maybe it just had to burp. I agree with you; we had to get a part replaced a few months back and we were without A/C for about 3 hours before the technician came. I thought "there's no way I can last if we have to try to sleep in this>" At that point the house was at 89 degrees.

Asked my very wise hubby what he would say when people ask about where Tom is when you are at church and he isn't. He said church people always want their churches growing; always wanting people to come to church so they could be asking for that reason. However, he also said for you to simply tell the truth "Tom's not interested." "Tom doesn't get it" Whatever and put the ownership on him rather than you have the ownership about it (does this make sense?)

Hubby has a mustache cup like that!

That is weird how bamboo shoots were in the water chestnut can!

    1. LOL! Actually, it was a can of bamboo shoots I picked up by accident. Perhaps I shouldn't have said anything about church. These are the sweetest and kindest folks ever; I think it's the different liturgy Tom (Roman Catholic) struggles with.

  5. I don't mind eating bamboo shoots, but - like the ingredients in ALL oriental food - they have absolutely no taste and no purpose.
It's amazing that the Asians are the healthiest people on earth and all live to be 150.

I'm glad that Betsy Begonia was resurrected (miracle!). I have absolutely no semblance of a green thumb. Every plant I touch perishes within hours. I've even had cactus plants die (no lie).

I envy the fact that you have central air and it's actually working.
Picture me in the sweltering TN wilderness with only a few timid electric fans. Fortunately the humidity is low this week, but that doesn't make me feel any better.

August is usually a mild month here - but this year it's a facsimile of hell with no end in sight.

    1. I'd happily shave years off my lifespan if it meant not eating bamboo shoots! You know, I've killed cactus as well. I wish Winter would just hustle up, already!

  6. Good selection of stories this week, Mevely. I did not know about the stove drawer. I thought it was a tool box.

If begonia leaves should not be wet, what happens when it rains?

Panda bears like bamboo shoots. How do they open the can though?

    God bless.

    1. I know, right? :)
Good point about the begonia. Compulsive: I normally go around misting everything, but they said "no."

  7. Used our store drawer for lids for years, until we got a new stove without the storage. Now lids are carefully arranged in a rack in a cabinet under our counter tops. And that was indeed a scary moment with the a/c! Glad everything turned out okay; this hot weather would have been begging a hotel room!
    Have a great week, Myra!

    1. Oh, I NEED a rack for those noisy lids. Thanks for the idea! You have a great week, too!

  8. {{grin}} Seriously--that's what that drawer is used for? {{and laughter}}

Thank you for the many smiles you bring with your truthful posts, my friend. "Betsy on death row" has me rolling as does the 10 year old boy in you. smiles

Hope you have a lovely week ahead.

    1. I thought they were pulling my leg, too! Until I Googled 'oven drawer.' Thanks for your kind words, my friend!

  9. OMW! you started my brain on a tangent, I had to stop and go ask Google to verify the under stove drawer. GOOGL said it is for warming foods. I still don't believe it. in my 75 years I have never seen or heard of anyone that did not use it for lids and pans …. so today is my first time to hear it and will change nothing. A. if I sat food down in there, I would never be able to lift it OUT... it is hard to lift food out of the oven, that is way to low.. besides all the stuff I don't clean out of the oven might fall on it.
I can't count the times I have opened things and it was not what I thought it was, that goes for boxes and bags also. I see what I want and reach out and put in basket and get home and WHAT is this?

    1. I don't think we'll change our habits anytime soon, either. The first thing I thought about was, what if bugs were attracted to it and crawled in …. YIKES! (We have a regular pest control service, but still.)

  10. forgot to say, my 10 year old self, wants to follow the FIRE trucks. I MAY have done that in the distant past... so glad the AC if fine

  11. Girl, I get a good chuckle every time I read your blog! I used to have a 10 year old boy living inside me but once I became a paramedic, he left. Nothing more annoying than onlookers getting in the way. I'm glad you didn't follow. I would just die if our A/C went out! Lawd, chil'! This ain't no kind of weather to not have A/C! LoL glad it is working fine! I can guarantee, if you have a gas stove, you do NOT want to use the drawer for keeping food warm! It will be burnt to a crisp in no time at all! Do NOT ask me how I know this because I will be forced to deny any accusations!

    Grace & Peace,
    Pam

I didn't realize you were a paramedic, Pam. Saluting. (no, seriously!) Call me weak, but I draw the line at having to observe human suffering.

  13. I have opened the wrong can before. And if I get a can I can't explain -it is my husband buying something 'better'. I have a ton of creamed corn - he likes and I like pla in. Oh well that is off the subject.
    That dog was cute.
I am a plant killer too.
    I don't have a warmer in my stove - but I
did not know what it was either.
You will love the Smokey Mountains!
    Love, sandie
