Summer at the Hodgepodge

It's that time again!   Joyce poses the questions and we gather 'round to answer.   Won't you join in?

Summer is upon us this week in the Northern Hemisphere.  Tell us three things on your bucket list.
  1. Road Trip to Florida next month!!!  I can't wait to break bread with some of my favorite people!
  2. Taste the lemonade at Toomer's Corner.
  3. Hear Sean of the South speak in August.

Something fun you used to do as a kid in the summertime.

During my grade-school years, Mother and I'd take the train from Lamy to visit her folk's farm in Minnesota.   Gathering fresh eggs was great fun, driving the tractor a Big Deal ...but what really rocked my boat was hanging with my grandfather and uncle as they tended to their cattle, their hogs.    'Imagine most folks would wrinkle their noses over the 'aroma' but I remember them as being oddly pleasant.

Later my parents sent  their horse-crazy daughter to camp in Colorado.   (Geeky me stands second from the right.)

Roof top or back yard?  Why?

Roof top!  (Except if there's thunderstorm activity anywhere in the surrounding counties.)   Why?  No snakes, no creepy crawlies.

Do you read food labels?  Place importance on them?  Make an effort to find out/care about where you food comes from?

Friend Diana would be aghast, but no I don't.  Aside from sodium content or carbs, not so much.

A song you have on repeat this summer?

Just one?  My musical tastes are all over the board, but the first one that comes to mind is Chad & Jeremy's Summer Song.

It's 1966 (and '83) once more!

Insert your own random thought here.

I'm never been one to impart Good Advice … but can't help but caution young women - should they marry - not to 'lose' their maiden names … even their former married names!    I've no-one to blame but myself, but I'm having a dickens of a time selling a little parcel in northern Arizona.   It was undeveloped in the 60's when my parents bought it … and remains so to this day.

Unfortunately, I never had the deed changed from my mother's name, and just paid the nominal taxes.  Now, I'm jumping through all sorts of hoops to prove I am who I am, because my last name differs from that shown in her Will.   Perhaps the proceeds aren't even worth the hassle, but I don't want my son and DIL to face any of this nonsense someday.

I hope y'all are enjoying a nice week?
Have fun … and be safe!

Hugs,
Myra

  1. Great summer memories and summer plans. The road trip should be fun. I presently have two cousins who live in Florida.
You've inspired me to make some home-made lemonade. The lemonade sold in stores is usually lousy.

The summer camp photos is cute and you didn't look "geeky" - - but a few of those other girls did...

Rooftop or yard?? You'll only catch me on a rooftop during a flood.
I don't think I've ever heard of Chad and Jeremy, but I like the song.

    1. Please excuse any typos in my comment. I was writing with an ANNOYING cat on my desk.

    2. Now I'm feeling like a dinosaur, Jon. Chad and Jeremy were THE darling duo of the early 60's.

Given today's flood, I HOPE you're not sitting atop the roof!

  2. Your summer bucket list one is a good one :) What great summer memories of visiting your grandparents' farm and enjoying all it offered for you to do and participate in :)

Hoping things get resolved so you can sell that parcel. It would seem a birth certificate would suffice, but these days so much more is required to prove that we are who we know we are :)

  3. I have my maiden name as my middle name on my SS card, but I never thought about anything like this.. and if you have been married and divorced several times, or lost a spouse by death, you have to have marriage cert with either divorce or death proving how your name was changed. I went through that here getting a ndw drivers license when baby ate my license. I had to prove I had to have all of the time line until I married bob, including marriage cert. horrible.

from age birth to 10, mother would bring me from Savannah, to Callahan FL and we would stay in my grandfather Motel, on old 301, it had a restaurant and being the piglet I am, I cried because I could not eat everything I wanted in the FREE restaurant.. as in 4 desserts. LOL.... eaglerly awaiting your roadtrip

    1. Baby ATE your license? Yikes!
That's such a sweet, sad story about your not being able to enjoy EVERYthing at the FREE restaurant.

  5. I was a horse-crazy girl, too, and would have loved going to that camp! Good for you taking care of that property matter now. My dad left a small parcel in what was expected to be a really "modern" self-contained community back in the 50s. That was not the reality that panned out and now you can't give it away (they tried over the years). I hope my mom can unload it before she passes because if it's left to me I will simply stop paying taxes and let the township have it back. They are the ones who legislated it to the point of being unusable.

    1. My son and DIL did something similar (quit paying taxes) on another unusable parcel they inherited. So much promise, dashed by reality.

  7. First of all I sure don't think that is geeky looking. Then I can say amen to the legal stuff, it can definitely be a pain in the rear.
But over all, I love the entry. Great visit@!
I am pasting the comment. I received an e-mail saying it could not be accepted for reasons I did not understand. So I am trying again...

    Love from over here.

    1. Thank you so much, Jack! That's so weird about your getting a 'bounce-back' … when I received both comments. I wonder if Blogland isn't becoming bi-polar!

  8. The smells around a barn are earthy. They are not unpleasant to me either although chicken crap smells awful if it gets wet.

  9. Happy Summer ! With the exception of that one glitch, sounds like some great days ahead for you! I really never thought about keeping my maiden name when I got married, no one did back then, but many do now. I have many happy memories of my grandparents farm. Some of the happiest summers were spent there. Hope all is soon resolved for you so you can enjoy your summer days !

  10. Have a great road trip! The farm stuff sounds great and so does the camp you went to. I like your thoughts on the rooftop because of the creepy crawling things.

  11. There are only 2 pictures of me on a horse. One, I’m about 5 years old and screaming my lungs out as I sit there on the house. The other is I’m in my 50’s and had somehow convinced my son to go on a trail ride with me. He said yes and I was determined not cry or be afraid - or at least look afraid. Never again!

  13. Sorry to hear the maiden name story. I'll have to check how things work here in the UK. Most women change their maiden names. Some keep it with a hyphen and their husband's name - e.g. Mrs Jones-Smith.

    God bless.

  14. I never minded the "smells" of a farm, either. I played king of the mountain on a big pile of dry manure with a couple friends. My mother was horrified by it, but my father said it was "good luck" and like a tiptoe through the tulips.

Regardless of the smells, I think what you enjoyed most was spending time with your grandfather and uncle. Who cared about the smells? I used to sit on the front step eating limburger cheese with my grandfather. It smelled so bad... kinda like dead fish... my grandmother wouldn't let him eat it in the house, but I was happy just to be sitting on the step with him. The smelly cheese was just a minor inconvenience. :)

  15. I didn't keep my maiden name but when I married Richard I kept my ex-husband's name. It was a bone of contention but it had been my name longer than my maiden name had been. I have tried to tell Harley to keep her maiden name but she can't wait to have her bf's name. I see it as that badge of ownership. YUCK! I love the picture of you at camp. I always wanted to go to camp. I can remember begging and begging but to no avail. We were just too poor. I made sure my kids got to go to all the camps they wanted to go to. Surprisingly they didn't really want to go that often. You look tall!! Are you tall?? I have always thought of you as more petite.

  17. The middle took her maiden name and combined it with the married one. She is a one of a kind in our phamily. My dad built the phamily home up high and thank goodness when the flood of 1965 rolled through Pueblo taking lives in its path. But my sis inherited grandothers home in the grove and it survived the flood of 1921 and 1965 as well. Entiment domain is going to push my sissy out of her home so the richy rich society can have an upscale hotel when they have to travel to Pueblo for their kids softball tournaments at Runyon Field. Unsure if the name changed, I know it for what it was as a kid. I am 5'5"! My mom was about that height too. THe others are all tall like my dad. Hm.mm...... bad bones like mom too and bad eyes like her mother before her. I love stopping by here. I am such a slug some days. I am anxious to read and catch up here. HUGS
