Stirred, not shaken

Hey there!

Imagine, if you will, a structure about the size of an Arby's -- housing the U.S. Postal Service, City Hall and the Coosada Police Department.   Not the sort of place we planned to hang Tuesday morning … but y'all know what God says about plans! (*smile*)

Some may recall, a number of weeks ago a police officer stopped by. Supposedly, when a relative had been unable to contact the previous homeowners, they called the police asking them to do a welfare check.
("I said a no-no-no, it ain't me babe. It ain't me you're looking for, babe.....")

In the 17 months we've been here, we've received maybe half a dozen letters in our box addressed to Mr. or Mrs. Jxxxxxx.  Distinctive handwriting -- but never a return address.  Rather than let curiosity get the best of me (and wind up in an orange jumpsuit), I quick-like scrawled "no longer at this address" across the front and stuck them in the nearest drop box.

Then yesterday I received a postcard addressed to Mr. J.  Same distinctive penmanship, but an unsettling, swarmy message to the Mr. about his wife.  AND, the back of the postcard wasn't a scenic something or another -- but a photo of Mrs. J. obviously taken in the backyard!  (BTW, from what I know he and she are, like Tom and me, empty-nesters in their 60's and 70's.)

Tom was all about, just give it back to the mail carrier.  But my 'what-iffer' started spinning. Sure enough the Post Office confirmed, with no return address there's nothing they can do but put it in the 'dead letter' box.   The Police?  Why, they're just the other side of that wall, honey.

Granted, ours is a small town, but I had to smile. Just a weary-looking gal who at first seemed bothered at being interrupted, then incredulous. Next, a friendly male clerk ... plus two inmates who wandered out from the back to see what was going on.  After reading and re-reading the card, she radioed for an officer.  Nice guy, but oh man! I didn't think they were handing out badges and guns to Eagle Scouts … he didn't look old enough to shave!   He took our contact information and assured us his Colonel would know exactly how and where to find Mr. J.  (Ya, that's why they let you guys have access to the cool databases.)   I so wish I could find out what happens next; but then again, I don't want some weird stalker dude showing up here expecting to find Mrs. J.

* * *

In other news ...
It feels SO good being re-retired!   I was secretly overjoyed when two of my favorite coworkers sent me FB friend requests, and another asked for my number.   You could've knocked me over with the proverbial feather when my normally distant GM came by to invite me to the staff Thanksgiving lunch this Thursday.  He even said, "You've always got a home here."  Wow.

We're still waiting to hear from the V.A. and/or U.A.B. Birmingham on Tom's TAVR procedure.  (I don't know about you, but once a call to action's been made, I'd prefer it be sooner rather than later.)  For now, we're planning to join my son and family at their place for Thanksgiving dinner. At son's request, I've ordered a smoked brisket to accompany the big bird.

'Hope to catch up with y'all again before too many days have passed!  Please, stay warm, stay safe!

Hugs, Myra

Update!
So, I just had a call from the Colonel (police).  He begins, "So what is it you want me to do?"  (huh?!?. I want you to find Mr. and Mrs. Jxxxxxx and warn them about this creep.)   No. He wants us to come back and get the card and take it over to the Millbrook (next town over) post office and speak to their Postmaster's investigator. I'm not sure what he thinks can be done without a return address, but he said maybe they can stop this kind of mail coming to us. (Ya, right.)

I did take a picture of the front and back (heh heh) and was thinking of sending it to their realtor who may know where they are. Tom says, "Don't get involved."  What say you?

  1. I am a little confused - so do you know who Mr. or Mrs. J is?
I think you should stay retired.
I would want that procedure done sooner than later too.

    1. Ya, M/M J are the ones we bought this house from; I've never met them, on account we closed while still living in Arizona.

  2. Why were the inmates wandering around? That is too funny of a story, Myra, but I think you were right to indeed talk with the police. You just never know these days with so many things! If there is ever a rest of the story that you find out, please share it here!

Glad you are re-retired. Only go for something if you want that you 100% think you want to do and then always on your terms LOL.

Hurry up and wait attitude seems to be the mojo of the VA! Here's hoping the procedure will be scheduled soon!

    Yum beef brisket!!

    1. Ya, isn't that funny about the 2 inmates? I just reached over and picked up my handbag more securely. Only in a small town! Oh, and I just updated the story (above).

  3. It's hard to believe that you've been in your new home 17 months already.
The strange mail that you keep getting is really unnerving. I think it's best that you went to the police. I hope the Boy Scout knows what he's doing.

When I lived in Texas I was bombarded (for over TEN years) with letters from bill collectors and attorneys addressed to the previous resident of the house. No matter how much I protested that he no longer lived there, the letters kept coming. It was infuriating.

In my heart, I just knew that you'd feel relieved being work-free again. Heck, there's enough stress in our lives to keep us busy without the added burden of a job.

Sending warm thoughts and prayers to you and Tom.

    1. I had hopes for that Boy Scout, too. Unfortunately, because no crime's been committed, they're not going to do anything. I've updated the tale, above.

    2. Thanks for the update. I really doubt if the Millbrook Postmaster would be of much help - but it might be a good idea to send a picture of it to the realtor. Who knows, they might be more helpful than the police...

    3. I forgot to ask - - is there a postmark on any of the letters?

    4. Sorry, I'm just seeing this! Ya, they're all from Mobile. Another one was delivered this morning; now I'm waiting to hear from the Postmaster.

  4. Praying for you and Tom, as always.

Did you buy the house from Mr J? Or was he perhaps a previous owner before you bought the house? Are all the letters/cards posted from the same destination? Or do they arrive from random places? Is the handwriting always the same on the envelope/card? Is it worth asking Poirot to investigate?

I've just watched a two hours episode of Poirot and fell asleep at the end. I still don't know whether he has solved the case or not. C'est incroyable, n'est ce pas?

    God bless.

    1. I'm woefully unfamiliar with Poirot, but yes. It's amazing. Yes, we bought the house from the J's; and yes, all that mail is postmarked from Mobile, AL with the same handwriting. The local police seem reluctant to do anything (see above), so perhaps your Poirot might take a holiday across the pond?

    2. Hercule Poirot is a detective character from the books by Agatha Christie. She also created Miss Marple, also a detective. Both characters have been made into TV series here in the UK.

I suggest you tell the Post Office that Mr J no longer lives at this address and could they stop sending his mail to you. If they don't stop, then write on each item "Not Known At This Address" and put the item back in a letter box. It is their responsibility (UK law - don't know about USA) to either return to sender or deal with the item according to their regulations. In UK law, you are not allowed to keep the item or open the letter. It should be posted back in a letter box with the inscription above. No need to put any stamps on it.

We sometimes receive letters with our correct address and zip code but with names of people we have never heard of. I posted them back and let the Post Office deal with it.

I agree with your husband. Don't get involved. It is up to Mr & Mrs J to have left a forwarding address. Here in the UK, if you move home, the Post Office will re-direct all your mail to your new address for six months for FREE. After that, you can pay a small sum to continue re-direction.

      God bless.

      God bless.

  5. Prayers for Tom, and with you on the sooner rather than later. Though I scheduled my hip replacement six months ahead -- between vacations -- but that was definitely elective. I've thought about "unretiring" but I'm able to stay retired and worth a little scrimping now and then.

  6. Joe's TAVR procedure went great and his heart is still pumping good as new so I hope Tom's gets scheduled sooner rather than later. Prayers will continue! As for your postal problem... yikes. Go to Millbrook so all your bases are covered and hopefully they CAN stop that mail from reading your mailbox. Keep the doors and windows locked and keep us posted!

  7. Well, that is pretty interesting! There are so many weirdos in the world, aren't there? I would probably go to Millbrook and take that one last step if I were you.

I am re-retiring in January so I know how you are feeling. xo Diana

  8. I hope Tom's TAVR surgery goes well I have the same problem as Tom and my doctor he's in Dothan wanted to make me an appointment with a doctor in Birmingham. I'm undecided what to do. Waiting until after Thanksgiving to let him no. Keep me updated about Tom and this procedure.

  9. Oh mish mash...and shame on the police...seriously, they could of handled this better. I would get involved, but that's just me...and we have had letters like that. Not creepy mind you, but other peoples mail. Keeping you all in prayer.

  10. Such a mystery, Myra! And whether to become further involved? Hmm. That will have to be your judgment call.
Praying for Tom that the procedure can be sooner than later. Waiting is so hard!

I never read comments but today I did, this is just to funny and I am laughing my head off, at your story, the three things in one tiny building, the boy scout and the colonel have me rolling on the floor.. I agree with the comment that says, put it back in the mail box, with not this address and forget about it. you did your best. that is enough. welcome again to retirement.. kudos for how good you are, that they all want to stay in touch.... hope the Vets kick start the TAVR and stop assling around. I do hate waiting.

  12. Boy oh boy what a mystery. I did smile from ear to ear about the young policeman, I think it was yesterday I was telling someone that we had started hiring HS students on our force. LOL
If Paula down in San Antonio was there she would get to the bottom of the mystery. LOL
I am the same once I know something will be done...... I am READY NOW!
Good entry. I wonder why the head cop couldn't just do the deed himself??????
    Love ye!

  13. What a bother with that unknown mailer . I would just mark it like you did saying not at this address. Strange they persist. Hope the Post Office can stop it for you. I too would be prefer sooner than later on Toms procedure. It seems like long enough already. It sounds like you made a very favorable impression on your employers. How nice to keep in touch. You not only had a job, but mede some new friends. Keeping you both in my prayers.

I'm glad you enjoying your time back at home and very nice of them to contact you and also invite you to the lunch. Hope you hear something soon on Tom's procedure. Enjoy your Thanksgiving dinner!
