House Hunters - Chapter 3 (sigh ...)

G'afternoon friends!
It feels nice to be back ... I've missed you!

Cut to the chase, you say?   OK.
We're not double-mortgagees.  Yet.
I'd love to keep this short and sweet ... but there's soooo much I want to tell you!

* * *

Saturday-before-last went (suspiciously) according to plan.
Tom's hip and his walk have been increasingly wonky, but I was still surprised when he agreed to a wheelchair at the airport.

(Don't tell him I shared this picture, OK?)

Aside from the fellow in the seat next to me who screamed he was going to "Beat the s*** out of!" someone for accidentally jostling him in the aisle ... our flights were wonderfully smooth.   Even our suitcases were the first out of the chute.  That's never happened!

Since both Tom's and my night vision has super declined, we elected to stay the night at Birmingham airport's Ramada Inn.

Oh.My.Goodness, y'all!
I appreciated the employee discount, but I'm thoroughly embarrassed that Big Corporation owns this property.

Yes, someone stole the smoke detector ... There appeared to be mold in the bathroom ... Even the bottom sheet was put on inside out!

My boss says the hotel group isn't held to the same standards as we are, but it was still disgusting.  (Yes, I checked for bed-bugs.  LOL!)

Poor Tom was so looking forward to having a nice, sit-down evening meal, and I'm sure Birmingham must have some normal family restaurants.  Except, aside from a Hardee's there was nothing to be found in the vicinity.  The further Tom drove through the unsavory neighborhood, the more alarmed (and cranky) I became.
After our 4th pass by Hardees, he finally pulled in.

Jasmine-at-the-counter was so cute!
She was probably doing a mental eye-roll when we kept asking her to repeat herself  .....we couldn't understand her accent!  Nevertheless, her recommendations were yummy.  We were the only ones in the restaurant, so she came out and visited with us and wanted to make sure my 'buffalo' wing sauce wasn't too hot.

Up n at'em the next morning, I was glad Tom offered to drive.  (I was the one who chose to rent a popular SUV, but wound up being intimidated by its bulk.)

We stopped at Cracker Barrel where I happily abandoned all concerns about carbs.   Tom was astonished when I ordered catfish (my first!) and cleaned my plate.  I was a little disappointed that it didn't have much flavor, tho.  Are you a fan?

On to meet our realtor, Belyn.  Man, I love it when strangers greet you with a hug!

And so it began!
I'd pre-selected 8 homes, but can't begin to describe how disappointed I felt at the first few.  I totally take back what I thought about Tom (being) "unimaginative" when he wouldn't get all ga-ga over homes on Zillow.

Sure, there was a crazy feeling of Deja'vu when I stood in the living room of a home I'd lusted over for months.  At the same time, I wanted to weep at the reality.  High-def photography can sure fool!

There were a couple winners, and I thank God that my DIL took time Tuesday afternoon to revisit the finalists.   Lois' keen eyes and realistic insights were invaluable.  I loved what she said about 'older' homes being a lot like older people:  We may have scars and bruises, but they're/we're still sound.

There was nothing not to love about the tidy home out on Tallassee Highway:

I didn't even mind that it only had ONE (blue) bathroom and stainless steel appliances.  Ha!

Then, a God moment:
As we sat in B's office signing papers, her broker happened in.   She introduced us - and, as an afterthought, asked:  "Chad, what would you think if you saw K**** H*****'s business card out there?"

"Well, I'd think that he wanted to buy it  -- to go with the parcel I sold him last year."

Stunned silence.

We learned that Mr. H has a reputation for being a mover/shaker in Wetumpka, his fingers in lots of pies. Immediately I regretted saying I didn't think a survey was necessary.

At B's suggestion, Tom and I took a lunch break while she made some phone calls.
When we returned she was near tears.  "I can't in good conscience write this contract for you."

Seems Mr. H is even challenging a property line and has plans to put up a parcel of self-storage units.   "I'm afraid your secluded little porch wouldn't be so secluded."

Heartsick.  I made a few unflattering remarks about Mr. H ... but a few hours later I thanked God for the happenstance encounter with B's broker.  Can you imagine if we'd gone ahead?!   Ours would have been a real David v. Goliath scenario.

Friday my son was off work and  agreed to accompany us and  share his thoughts about a 1920 charmer in Wetumpka's historical district.   (Goodness, I love that little town!)

Tho' Tom and I'd butted heads about this home earlier in the week, he put aside his reservations and talked about putting a deck out back.
That night we brokered a deal, and boarded the plane Sunday morning with smiles on our faces.

Until Tuesday night when the inspector's report arrived.  26 pages.  Tom wasn't half-way through reading it to me, when I held up my hand and said, "Stop!"   It read like a bad Stephen King novel.

The seller countered, to no avail.
Last night they dropped the price almost $20k and offered to hold the paper while we contracted the repairs ... but frankly, that place scares me.

Kenny Rogers' song comes to mind:  "You gotta know when to hold, when to fold ... know when to walk away, know when to run ..."

* * *

Bless Tom's heart.  All this week I've been unusually pooped tired.  Even my eye sockets hurt.
"I just can't zig and zag like I used to."

His response cracked me up:
"Honey, you never could.  If you can't plan every detail 3 weeks in advance, you're not comfortable."
(LOL. He's not far wrong!)

* * *

The week was far from being wasted.
I learned what communities I don't want to live in ... consumed half my body weight in fried onion rings and BBQ pork ...  did some serious front-porch sitting ... and got to spend precious hours with those I love.

Meanwhile?  B continues to send me listings she feels are a good fit.I just got off the phone with Troy and Lois, who've agreed to go check out those we feel strongly about.   (I just can't justify the last-minute airfare ... and the place is going to be theirs someday, anyway.)

Thanks so very much for listening so long!
(I probably wouldn't know "Brevity" if it snuck up and bit me.)

Color me humming "Let It Be" and sending hugs ....
Myra

  1. Oh my, how disappointing to have none of the houses be what they were supposed to be or the deals not work out. I don't know if I'd have the patience for a cross country house hunt. Praying you find the right one soon and the deal is perfect.

  2. Finding a new home is a lot of work, isn't it? I hope you find something suitable soon.

    1. Thanks, Kim. I never considered things wouldn't magically fall in place.

  3. Oh my gosh, you must be absolutely exhausted. How disheartening those disappointments must have been. I'm so sorry but to be more positive...those just weren't meant to be. What is so funny is that I was watching HGTV House Hunters and the couple was looking in Tallassee! I had never heard of it before and then you posted the street you were on. Too weird! Stay positive!! Love & hugs!

    1. I'd love to have seen that HGTV episode! Want to hear something funny? When I first started searching on Zillow and input "Wetumpka", listings would often appear for Tallassee. Of course, I was reading it "Tallahassee" ... wondering when "stupid" Zillow was going to fix that glitch.

  4. I like the picture of Tom. As a matter of fact I like Tom. LOL
anyway, Inspectors.. Military, civilian or aliens like to justify their existence and the fact they are smarter than God.
I used to do home inspections (at no cost). Inspectors as a whole like to 'show what they know, and justify the costs of the report.' Don't mis-read that. I have found serious faults, but as a general rule 90% of a LONG report is usually, 'correct' but VERY MINOR. Most homes I have inspected have been very good homes. Only once did I give a serious 'do not touch this' property statement, it had to do with a structural problem, an addition with a problematic ceiling, it was (and usually is) an addition added with no permits or inspections.
Sorry this could go on, but take the home inspections with a grain of salt but do not ignore them. The ones I am familiar with are full of 'fluff' to make the inspector appear very knowledgeable. I really was hesitant to say anything, because I am judging from my experience and have NEVER dealt with BUILDINGS in states other than TN,SC,NC, GA and FL.

BUT I really did enjoy the trip. Best of luck. (Oh on the photos) I (we) bought a home in NC sight unseen over the internet. Great pictures.I knew the realtor personally. the photos gave the appearance of a huge front yard. it wasn't. I also bought without a survey. The side porch encroaches on city r/w by 10 feet. That is going to be an ouch if we ever go to sell. LOL

    1. GREAT advice, Jack! In our case, there was fungus/mold, termite damage/rotting supports, etc. We'd paid extra to include a structural inspection. When the fellow called the next morning he began, "Man, I hate these kinds of calls."

  5. Seems like you have a good realtor who is looking out for you. Hopefully by seeing the houses she did show you and having a chance to talk with you, she has a feel of what you are looking for and will keep her eyes opened for just the right one. It is out there, just need a little extra time in finding it. It did seem like you had a great visit though! I'd be tempted to write a review on the motel web site about their accommodations unless you can't do that since you work for the parent company. I would definitely write a little note to that Hardees and say how pleasant of an employee Jasmine was :)

    2. Yes, Betty, Belyn is a gem. So patient!

I'm still toying with leaving a review on TripAdvisor ... not so much the irregularities in our room, but the gosh-awful, "I could care less" attitude and appearance of their front desk agents.

Great idea of writing to Hardees about Jasmine! Thank you!

  7. I just LOVE you. you are so ME... I think we might be kin under the skin. Howling with laughter over the brevity remark. you may be the only one who understands when you go to my post that I just can't be brief.
I am so happy for you that you found out about both houses before it was to late. When we moved here in 1989, we looked for weeks and weeks, we went inside dozens of homes. only one home shouted to us BUY ME. we lost that one... one day we drove by this house and since it was empty got out and peeked in the front window. INSTANT love... so my advice is you will proably live in the house the rest of your life. don't rush it. wait until it shouts INSTANT love...
Glad hubby chose the wheel chair. it really is hard for a male to accept help. like when I whispered in Bob's ear in Walmart parking lot after his stroke, if you don't put your nads on this basket I am going to make a loud scene and embarrass you. he could walk well with the basket. good luck in your long distance house hunt.

    1. I love my husband to pieces, but dang. This house-hunt would be so much easier if I didn't have to compromise. LOL. I never realized how different our priorities and preferences were.

PS - Loved your story of threatening Bob at Wal-Mart. Thanks for the laugh!

  8. What a week you had but like you say if was a learning curve and puts you in a better place to make decisions. The move you're making has to be done with care. I had much easier house hunting than you did as I found this place after the 3rd try. But I was not moving far away and was already familiar with what our area had to offer in my price range.Keep the faith! There is a house just meant for you!

"Honey, you never could. If you can't plan every detail 3 weeks in advance, you're not comfortable." My family would just call me a control-freak and be done with it. Richard was the planner here.

    1. I get that from my dad, the Ultimate Planner. Even on our 50's road trips, my father had an index card clipped to the visor stating how many miles to be driven in 'x' numbers of days. No time for detours or dilly-dallying.

  10. Wow, where do I begin? Just some observations:
Who the heck would want to steal a smoke detector from a hotel??
I have never been able to understand Southern accents (and some are far worse than others). I needed a translator in order to decipher some people in Texas - - and the same thing happens here in Tennessee.
As for catfish - - you're absolutely right. It has no taste at all. I love fish, but catfish is on the very bottom of my list.

I can fully understand what you're going through with the house-search routine. It's beyond frustrating. And those houses listed on Zillow NEVER look like the photos. I speak from experience.

My parents bought (and sold) many houses and I could tell you horror stories that would curl your toes. The whole process isn't for the faint-of-heart.
I've been screwed Big Time by realtors....but I don't want to sound too depressing.

I prefer to end on an optimistic note. I have no doubt that you will find the perfect home. It's difficult but certainly not impossible. Keep the faith!

    1. I'm feeling foolish for buying into the Zillow fairy-tale ... believing this would be easy-peasy.

Nice to see your optimism. Surprised, LOL ... but nice, nevertheless. (You're just trying to cheer me up, aren't you?)

    2. "Optimism" isn't in my vocabulary - I could drive Pollyanna to suicide.
BUT I truly think you'll find a great new home. You're searching in a nice area.

  12. Whew! Thank goodness for that realtor! She saved you from a potential disaster. I don't envy you moving to another state, but having a good realtor in your corner makes all the difference in the world. You guys will find the right place.

I love catfish. To me, they have a slight musky taste, and they're at their best when fried in a nicely seasoned cornmeal mixture.

    1. OK, I'll give it another try! I think the restaurant took the 'safe' route and opted for no seasoning.

  14. Oh my you had an adventure to say the very least! Glad you have great folks around you to lend a hand. The housing market is mean today! My grandson found a sweet little house but the 20 something year old palce hads it's original roof and the seller would not budge. Bye bye house. The house they did finally purchase is gorgeous even though a couple bedrooms are wildly colorful! Your hotel review cracked me up! It is unreal how some of the hotels have poor eyesight when overlooking some of the problems. I remember a little hotel in Ark City, KS when Nick attended Cowley College there. All the reviews said the same thing, there is a darn mouse running around and the hotel laughs and laughs. Too ignorant to catch it I guess! We shivered everytime we past the otherwise normal looking place. Don't let me get started otherwise I will write a novel here! Many prayers for you and Tom with your house hunting. Have a blessed and beautiful Thanksgiving and I hope your plans turn out beautifully. HUGS

  16. Your new forever home hasn't found you -- though Lois may have spotted something good since this post. I looked for months before finding my apartment. Luckily the building passed inspection and the financials were solid. I'm glad I waited, even though I was getting pretty sad about finding my new home 26 years ago.
