It's an Autumnal Hodgepodge!

Joyce asks ... we respond.
What could be simpler?

I'm soooo ready for Fall!  How about you?

* * *

Thursday (September 22) is the first official day of autumn in this part of the world.  How will you welcome the season?  I know some of you have been celebrating way too early, but it's official now, so permission granted.  House Beautiful recently listen 10 ways to make your home smell like fall (you can read the list here.) What's a scent you love this time of year and how will you add it to your home?

Well, it's still ridiculously warm here in Phoenix, so I certainly won't be turning on the stove!   I used to love scented candles, but after learning from our vet (that) they may have contributed to Caraleigh's death, I won't ever be lighting any more candles inside our home.

Reaching back ... I have to say you can't beat the aromas of home-made chili bubbling on the stove and a mesquite wood fire in the hearth.  Heaven!

Apple pie or pumpkin pie?  Apple cake or pumpkin bread?  Warm apple cider or a pumpkin spice latte?

Absolutely, always pumpkin!
Unfortunately, DH doesn't care for it.
(Because HE's crazy for apple - we compromise and don't keep either one around the house to tempt us me.)

Do you suffer from what is sometimes referred to as an afternoon slump?  What helps ward it off before it hits, and/or tell us what helps you shake it off once its here?

Yes, almost always.
I'm up at 4 each weekday, so when, at day's end, I get in the car and let myself relax ...
... well, by the time I get home some 60 minutes later, I'm totally primed for a nap!

Ladies:  How have your friendships with women inspired you or made you a better person?  For the men here:  How have your friendships with men inspired you or made you a better person?

Until a couple decades ago (with few exceptions), I regarded other women as adversarial; not to be trusted.   I enjoyed a closer camaraderie with men.
Over time - and in large part through blogging - I've engaged and bonded with many wonderful women, each of whom has taught me by example.  Thank you!

Are you a people pleaser?   Yes.
If you said yes, do you think that's a good or a bad thing?  If you said no, do you wish you were more of a people pleaser?

I didn't consciously think about it 'way back when', but I believe acting in a subservient manner has suited me well in the workplace ... especially in my present circumstance.

The seasons are a-changin' .... share a favorite song relating in some way to change (not necessarily seasonal change; it could be change of any kind.)

I love Judy Collins' "Both Sides Now"

What do you wish would never change?

My computer's mysterious, insidious updates!
If I wanted Windows 10, I'd have asked for it.
God bless my tech-savvy co-workers who combined to make sure it went back to the mother-ship and stayed there!

Insert your own random thought here:

Oh, I've scads of random thoughts, but it's best they lay in wait.
This?  This resonated with me, and I hope it does with y'all.

Hugs from Phoenix!

  1. I sure enjoyed your HP today! I've been surprised at the people who either love pumpkin or not. Thought I was the only one who doesn't like it. I like your Judy Collins song!

    1. Thanks, Terri! Here, I thought my hubby was the only critter who disliked pumpkin. It's interesting to read the myriad of song selections this week. Not a lot of duplication.

  2. I liked your random thought :) That is a very nice quote! That was interesting about the scented candles and what the vet said. It is cooling down a bit though here in Phoenix. Its nice not having the air conditioning running so much :)

    1. Betty, when I read those lines in Susan's book, oh, how it resonated! I clipped it in Goodreads, then thought to made this little quote box. Yay for cooler mornings!

  3. Wow, you've given us a lot to ponder. I will just offer some random thoughts:

Windows has been trying to force Window 10 on me for a year. I'm staunchly opposed and still have Windows 8.

I used to be a people pleaser but I finally wised up and quit. Let THEM please ME... I've grown selfish in my old age (not that I'm old, mind you...)

Women or men? I've always gotten along with women far better than with men. In fact I often hate men. If I were a woman, I'd probably be a lesbian....

Autumn?? My favorite time of year!
But here in the wilds of TN it's still near 90 degrees. I feel like I'm back in TX or California.

I LOVE anything pumpkin and I bake lots of pumpkin bread and pumpkin pies. And I love apples - - with caramel. And cinnamon rolls. Apple cider - - but not hot cider.

I had no idea scented candles could be toxic. I plan to light a few around my liberal Hillary-loving friends....

(haha sometimes I actually make myself laugh....)

    1. Jon, I'm still chuckling! (Love the way your mind works.)
That question about women/men friendships -- and the way it was worded -- reminded me of something Bert Parks would ask the Miss America contestants. (*snort*)

  4. I enjoyed reading your answers and getting to know a little about you through hodgepodge. I didn't know candles could be hazardous, we don't use them, but good to know. Have a great week.
    Lori in Blue Ridge, GA

    1. Nice to meet you, Lori! We never suspected the toxicity in candles might be hazardous to our fur baby. My boss' SIL is a firefighter and he's REALLY anti-candles.

  5. Fall is getting a big welcome here as I look forward to cooler days. I do love the beautiful fall leaves as they change color and I love both pumpkin and apples and indulge in them as often as I can. Pumpkin spice candles will be burning here at my house. I have no critters to worry about. My favorite song for fall is Autumn Leaves. Happy Fall to you ! Hope you have some cooler days coming your way !

    1. Happy Fall, indeed! I imagine Mother Nature really puts on a grand display there where you live. I'd not thought of Autumn Leaves in years, but as soon as I read this, it began coming back to me. Smiles!

  6. I tried Windows 10 for a bit and didn't like it so went back to 7. I'm not a change type gal. We are still pretty warm here today...91* today. But fall is coming...and then winter...and then I'll bitch! I find it interesting that the vet thought the candle contributed to your dog's death! Did he say how?? I've burned scented candles for years! None lately! So I can't blame that on my cough! Hope you have a good weekend!!

    1. Paula, I was too distraught at the time to listen carefully (to the vet) ... but when he first began examining her and listened to her struggling to breath he asked if we burned candles. I think we're all affected by the toxicity - particularly in the less expensive brands - but it's magnified more so for the little ones. I hope you feel better soon!!!

  7. I about missed this. I love the way Jon thinks. Well except the pumpkin, Tom is the MAN, APPLES!
Very good read as always. I could never answer that succinctly!. Fall does sound good.
Just returned from Florida, bought a small home in Deltona,<45K. I think we will like it. Have had VERY little success on the internet last three days.
    Have a great weekend.

    1. Congrats again on your new house ... and, of course, your 60th anniversary. Woo-hooooo!

PS - Glad to 'see' you again and especially glad to know your absence was just internet related!

  8. greetings from a people pleaser, my reason being I was born fat and was always in the mode of making people like me..
pumpkin trumps apple.. I to get up at 4 and yes to afternoon slump.. anytime after 1 and I can't think properly.
I have always preferred talking to men over women.. but then I prayed to turn into a boy until I was 10 and realized it was not going to work...

    1. Yup ... there's too much evidence, we must be related!
Even as a little girl (aka, 'tom-boy') I felt boys were more straightforward and less cruel.

  9. Love your answer on the friendships of woman. Also a very good answer on computers never changing!!!
    Have a wonderful weekend.

    1. Thanks, Debby! I hope your weekend is turning out just as you'd like!

  10. The calendar might be telling us it's fall, but it's ninety plus degrees here today, and has been for like the 90-some days in a row. Even so, hubby and I went to an outdoor flea market today and sweltered, and then to a gun show and sweltered some more (No AC!) and then to a German restaurant where they were already celebrating Oktoberfest. A wee bit early, but a good excuse to indulge. The restaurant also has an awesome bakery, and we spent darned near as much in there as we did on our meals. (Bad, bad, bad!)

I loved all of your answers. I'm a life-long people-pleaser, too, and at this point in life, I wouldn't know how to be any different. I've also always been "one of the guys" in some ways, and have had... and still do have... a lot of male pals. But I've also got a bunch of amazing gal pals. Guess that makes me double blessed.

When I enlarged your random thought thingie and started reading it, I though, "Gee, that sounds familiar..." HA It brought tears to my eyes that it meant something to you. :)

    1. Ha! I hope(d) I wasn't violating any copyright laws?! A few years ago I wanted to excerpt something from a "Chicken Soup" book and geeze, all the legal forms I had to complete and submit.

It's been YEARS since I've eaten at a German restaurant or been to an Oktoberfest. That makes my mouth water.

    2. I had sauerbraten. YUM! It was every bit as good as the stuff I make myself... and a LOT easier!

I just saw your review on Goodreads. Thank you so much. :) If you have an account on Amazon, any chance of you cutting and pasting the review over there, too? If not, no biggie. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

  11. I am a slacker this week, all week long. Could not be motivated to move and do something constructive! Must move this week and get busy! SO much to do!
I preferred working with men over women. Women can be too petty. But men can be as gossiping as women too these days! Don't know why! I have had some of the same friends most of my life so I have been blessed. I have a very good blogging friend who is a guy. He is single and in his 50's but most of us gals surrounded him and sort of adopted him. He recently lost his father and is having a hard time coping with that loss. He says everything he knows his dad taught him. :-( I hate hearing that he is so sad and he is so cool. Pearl S. Buck lived down the road from him years ago. Awesome neighbor! He helped me with some tech stuff here too. Just a great guy so I do like male friends too. I love all the smells of autumn. I am sorry about your precious Caraleigh. Why did your vet say the candles contributed to her demise? I know peanut butter, used in dog treats, has had some brands go to artificial sweetners. That alone should wake America up! Those things will kill a dog quicker than you can say don't eat that! I am very careful with treats these days for all the pets . I hate artificial sweetners. I worked in the medical school, consuming 100 percent pure chemicals and folks can't understand how cancer comes into our lives! I worked with a doctor who consumed diet Coke and berated people drinking sugary Coke! Well sugar in moderation won't kill you, chemicals will! Artificial sweetners in gum products too. People have lost pets who ate a pack of gum. JUst so sad, kind of like Blue Bell ice cream. A friend who lives in Texas was shocked that the consumers and company could care less about the deaths their product caused. Now they are at it again, recalls galore. I wonder why America wants to kill us off? Who will pay for all the immigrants free perks?! Holy smokes! What a mess we have become! They just recalled my multi grain Eggo waffles, so I have to go back to making my own from scratch! Not a hard task, I own three different waffle irons! Oktoberfest is here too! There is a German restaurant that is so wonderful! A gentleman I knew who survived the holocaust, his friend owned the place. Noelle was there recently, loving all the delicious dishes. Yum! We are making sLOVEnian food, kolbasi and barley. On the stove. So tasty. Noelle was in Pueblo earlier this week and visited the phamily market. Now she is off to Dallas watching the game live at the stadium with her friend Ann who treated her to Cowboy tickets! Since I wrote a novel here, I better sign off. Your posts are so cool. xo
