May is for Mother

As we in the U.S. prepare to celebrate Mother's Day,

Terri wants to know .....

Where did your mom grow up?

In a tiny dot on the map in SW Minnesota.  

Funny. For having lived on a farm, she was always a bit afraid of the animals and never much cared for them. 

Tell us about her siblings, if she has/had any.  Did you have a favorite aunt or uncle?

Not in the conventional sense, no.

When mother was 10 y/o, her parents took in a widower cousin's daughter.  In spite of the fact my grandparents hadn't any extra nickels to rub together, Elsie's father never contributed a cent to his daughter's upbringing.  I think my mother always resented him for that oversight.

When mother was 20, her parents welcomed a son.

As a little girl, I adored "Uncle Rolly."

What is ONE of your favorite memories, you can share with us of your mom.

In May of 2000 mother and I travelled back 'home' to New Mexico.

But. Because the Cerro Grande fire had just ravaged so much of Los Alamos, the National Guard looked poorly at those who had no official business on the 'Hill.'  We were agenda-less; basically confined to Santa Fe.

Remembering mother's passion for trading with the pueblo Indians, her friendships with a couple potters … I made a few inquiries and learned that Lupita was, indeed, still living.

Hands down, their meeting is my favorite.

Let's not leave out the grandmothers.  Share what you will.

Owing to geographical distances, I rarely saw my grandmothers. There aren't many memories.  

My dad's mom was a stern, imposing sort, I didn't like much.  (Only as an adult, could I begin to understand her unhappiness.)

Grandma Hanson never had much to say, but allowed me to make butterscotch pudding to my heart's content.  She also made sure her freezer was well stocked with lefse.  I must have eaten my own body weight several times over! 

Do you have any special plans for Mother's Day?

Yeay!  Son and Lois have invited us to their place Saturday afternoon.  I've been asked to bring my broccoli cauliflower salad and just look forward to hanging out.
