As we in the U.S. prepare to celebrate Mother's Day,
Terri wants to know .....
Where did your mom grow up?
In a tiny dot on the map in SW Minnesota.
Funny. For having lived on a farm, she was always a bit afraid of the animals and never much cared for them.
Tell us about her siblings, if she has/had any. Did you have a favorite aunt or uncle?
Not in the conventional sense, no.
When mother was 10 y/o, her parents took in a widower cousin's daughter. In spite of the fact my grandparents hadn't any extra nickels to rub together, Elsie's father never contributed a cent to his daughter's upbringing. I think my mother always resented him for that oversight.
When mother was 20, her parents welcomed a son.
As a little girl, I adored "Uncle Rolly."
What is ONE of your favorite memories, you can share with us of your mom.
In May of 2000 mother and I travelled back 'home' to New Mexico.
But. Because the Cerro Grande fire had just ravaged so much of Los Alamos, the National Guard looked poorly at those who had no official business on the 'Hill.' We were agenda-less; basically confined to Santa Fe.
Remembering mother's passion for trading with the pueblo Indians, her friendships with a couple potters … I made a few inquiries and learned that Lupita was, indeed, still living.
Hands down, their meeting is my favorite.
Please share a picture or two of your mom with us.
May I share four?

Happy together!
Let's not leave out the grandmothers. Share what you will.
Owing to geographical distances, I rarely saw my grandmothers. There aren't many memories.
My dad's mom was a stern, imposing sort, I didn't like much. (Only as an adult, could I begin to understand her unhappiness.)
Grandma Hanson never had much to say, but allowed me to make butterscotch pudding to my heart's content. She also made sure her freezer was well stocked with lefse. I must have eaten my own body weight several times over!
Do you have any special plans for Mother's Day?
Yeay! Son and Lois have invited us to their place Saturday afternoon. I've been asked to bring my broccoli cauliflower salad and just look forward to hanging out.
Sunday's up in the air.
How about you?
Thanks for taking time to join me at the Medley!
Enjoy your day … stay safe!
Hugs, Myra

I loved todays questions and your answers. the photo of your mom and dad when they were yound, the flowered dress pic, is beautiful. I love to see the fashions and looks of other time periods. I remember when all nurses wore those caps no matter where they were working. my mom was born in the hospital here, 2 miles from my home and lived 2 miles from my home now, until she was 18 and married daddy and moved to Savannah, she lived there until she died. she had one sister that was more like a sister to me than an aunt since she was 9 years older than me. thanks for your memories and for stirring up mine. I may use the questions for mothers day post....
ReplyDeleteI, too, miss the olden nurses' uniforms. It almost lent an air of respect, don't you think?
DeleteLooking forward to your Mother's Day post!
Very lovely pics of your mom and that cool collage with the report card. I will have to Google lefse! Happy Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Ya, I used to love smearing it with real butter, sprinkling with sugar before rolling it up and eating. Sigh … it's been what, more than 50 years.

ReplyDeleteI remember your heartwarming post about Lupita and I was happy to read it again. It's a beautiful story. And I certainly remember the horrible fire that ravaged Cerro Grande.
ReplyDeleteThe nursing photo of your Mom is lovely - and I really like the two photos of your parents at very different chapters in their lives.
Have a fantastic Mother's Day, Myra.
P.S. I'm not sure yet, but I might write a Mother's Day post about my Mom's New Mexico adventures ... (you've inspired me)
I made so many errors in my first comment that I thought it was best to delete it.
DeleteThank you for saying that, Jon! During that visit to the pueblo, Lupita stepped out for a moment and came back with a plain black pottery plate for us. Today it sits on a book shelf holding my rings and earrings.
DeleteWhat lovely memories you have, Mevelyn. And a wonderful family.
ReplyDeleteI had to look up lefse. Never heard of it, although we may have a similar version in the supermarkets under a different name.
God bless you and yours my friend.
Sorry I forgot ... Happy Mother's Day.
DeleteGod bless.
Thank you so much! My memories - good and not-so-good - are priceless.

ReplyDeleteThank you, Wendy... and the same to you!
DeleteGreat memories and photos, Myra, all in honor of Mother's Day. I sure hope you have a blessed one, my friend!
ReplyDeleteAnd you, as well with your precious momma!
DeleteI do remember that blog post about your mom and her meeting with Lupita! That must have been interesting for your grandparents to have had a son when your mom was 20 years old.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you have the start of a good Mother's Day weekend ahead!
betty
I know, right? "Interesting" is a great way to put it! Happy Mother's Day, Betty!
DeleteThis was such an enjoyable blog post. Thank you. I pulled up the post on your mother's and Lupita's reunion. What a joy that must have been and I can clearly see why it is such a fond memory for you. It sounds like you will have a most enjoyable Mother's Day.
ReplyDeleteThank you for taking time to read that! As a child I hated having to travel to the pueblos, but now I'm grateful for the opportunity.
DeleteEnjoyed reading your answers. Happy Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Tammy!
DeleteYou have some interesting memories there. I'm glad you had a nice memories of most of the women in your life. So what is lefse?
ReplyDeleteLefse's a Norwegian flatbread made from potatoes … soft in texture, not unlike the soft tortillas used to make wraps.
DeleteHope your Mother's Day is extra special.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
DeleteI never saw much or got to know many of my relatives. We always seemed to live so far from all of them.
ReplyDeleteMy mother is often on my mind. She's been gone for almost 5 years now and I miss her.

Exactly … our CLOSEST kin (from New Mexico) was 997 miles! My own mom passed in 2004 and yes, I miss her. How blessed we were, won't you agree?
DeleteI have a love for old photos. That of your parents and especially of your mother in the nurse uniform are super. I cannot figure how I am so late. ReplyDeletecame back, enjoyed the trip to the past. It must have been before we met. Iloved the entry, 'The lady with Red Lipstick'.
SWEET Lupita, Nice.
Ha … thank you, Sherry! Remember that old Anita Bryant ad? With THAT in mind, "A day without Jack is like a day without sunshine." (*smile*)
