... and thanks for your sweet comments on my guest room! Our little house isn't anything special, but I'm enjoying the opportunity to surround myself with those things that mean a lot.

as a rule, i never like a gift. i am hard to please in the gift dept. three gifts i like come to mind. a statue of Mary riding on a donkey holding Baby Jesus, a lap quilt and recently a visa card for 100.00... cash is my favorite or visa which is same as.

DeleteThe best gift I ever received was homemade Mother's Day cards from my children. I'd just returned home from the hospital after loosing what would have been my 7th baby. They cheered me to no end. Some things you just never forget and that was one of them.

DeleteThe best gift I ever received was an electric typewriter from my parents at Christmas during my senior year of high school. We already knew I'd be heading off to college to study journalism the next year. The best gift I ever gave? I guess it was the Christmas our daughter was really struggling with depression and life in general. Photography was the one thing that put a spark in her and she wanted a good, professional quality camera. We really couldn't swing it that year so I gave her my Nikon and all the accessories. She cried and cried knowing I gave it up for her....which made me cry and cry. It was a very soggy Christmas.

DeleteThe best gift I ever received was a little gold RN pendant from my youngest son. He was 16 and it was the first gift he ever bought me all on his own. No help from anyone and used his own money. My favorite gift we gave was Justin his first car. So exciting to see his reaction. (He wrecked it the first week)

ReplyDeleteI was never very keen on giving or receiving gifts. Gift-giving is usually mandatory, which - in essence - is meaningless.
True gifts (as others have pointed out) come from the heart. Love, forgiveness, friendship, family, are far greater gifts than anything of monetary value.
When it comes to tangible gifts - - the best thing I ever received was the piano that my father bought when I was 10 (well, almost 10).
He actually bought it for my mother, who was an accomplished pianist - but that piano became my sole treasure and inspiration.
I still have it - - although it's now battered and out of tune.
I totally agree about mandatory, obligatory gifts. Geesch. The first thing that popped in my own mind is a miniature rose quartz angel which appeared on my desk one morning a few years ago. A friend/coworker knew I was struggling; and quietly, without fanfare or reason, left it for me.
DeleteI'm one of those pain-in-the-butt people who is very uncomfortable receiving gifts. Especially when they're given purely because of the date on the calendar, or when they're ostentatious and have nothing whatsoever to do with who I am. It's much more meaningful to me to receive a thoughtful trinket... even a candy bar... on any random day than it is to get an elaborate expensive gift simply because it happens to be my birthday.

One thing that helps me with gift giving is knowing the other person's love language. My daughter Amy always enjoys quality time with me--that's what fills her love tank so she chooses some place that's special and we go there with her, spending time together and she feels loved. My love language is gifts of service. Tom cleaned my oven shiny clean a few weeks ago and I felt especially loved! So that's my answer about gifts and I think you get the idea.
